Issue 5

Always warm up and stretch before the game. This helps minimize the risk of injury from sudden stretching of cold muscles

Sponsor for YMCC Hockey LendiQ - Keyinvest Lending Services -David Cosgrove 0412 624 312 david@lendiq.com.au Presidents report: Patrick Knott : As I start writing this message the extended easter break is in its dying moments. Reality will hit tomorrow when back at work and I know I wont be the only one feeling slightly miffed at the change. On the bright side however, we have some awesome hockey to look forward to so cheer up everyone, its time to start swinging some sticks. Next Sunday 1st May is our 50th Junior Carnival. I know we have made a request for assistance already but I will impersonate a broken record and ask again that everyone tip-in to help. Most of us in the club have not been involved with YMCC for 50 years so this event outlasts most of us. I can remember playing as a 10 year old and loved every second of the day and I hope our current batch of 10 year olds will be able to look back in years to come and say the same. Sure, next Sunday we may be outnumbered some of the bigger clubs, but this is something our club is famous for and we can all be very proud of the achievement. I would like to thank John Crute for the donation of his goalie gear to the club. John has decided to hang up the “canes” after a remarkable career in the net for YMCC that began in 1956 and included a raft of WA State and Australian teams. You will see a run down John’s achievements elsewhere in this edition of the Sportsman. But of special note he was the keeper in the mens team that was first promoted into A grade back in 1958 (see photo 2nd from left back row). Can I take this opportunity to thank John for his true commitment to the club and to hockey, you may be retired John but we still want to see you down cheering for us at the big games. Hugh Reynolds, our junior co-ordinator has been able to organise a session on umpiring for junior players. Hockey WA will be conducting the Umpiring Clinic at the Perry Lakes Clubrooms Wednesday 11th May 5.30 – 6.30. To be honest, interested seniors can attend as well as the “Umpriing 101” session will be useful to anyone keen to avoid that “I have no idea what I am doing” moment when they umpire. The club expects all players to become proficient umpires. I like to politely tell umpires what they are doing and if you do too, then perhaps you need to be fully skilled to do so. Attending this session could enhance your ability to advise, guide and converse with umpires of all abilities. Parents are welcome as well. Whilst on umpiring, if any seniors wish to put their names forward as being avaiable to be paid to cover umpiring duties then please send your details to your respective Playing Directors. Congratulations to Sarah Moore-Crouch on her recent marriage to Glen Foreman. Good to have you back after your honeymoon Sarah. At training last night I am embarrassed to admit an errant ball from my stick that I scooped into the air dobbed our Women’s VP Bob Jacobs bang on the head. Fortunately there was no claret but quite understandably, Bob was not impressed. We wont be issuing helmets for coaches just yet but this 1 in 10,000 shot illustrates the care we need to take particularly during warm-ups at Shenton. Do as I say not as I do ! Saturday mornings at Perry Lakes are soon to start, but lets get the Junior Carnival over with first. See you all on Sunday the 1st May at Perry Lakes. Congratulations? significant arrivals? newsworthy news? – please email bmckechnie@bigpond.com so it can be included in the Sportsman . Also please email results

John Crute a note written by John to YMCC “Last year’s selection in the State Over 70’s team to play in the National Championships held in Busselton/ Bunbury is the conclusion to my State and Australian representation which started when I was the first male player from Busselton to be selected in a State side 51 years ago. During those 51 years I have represented the State and Australia at every level that was available to me at the time and consider it a real privilege to have done so. I have been very fortunate to have played my senior hockey at YMCA in a team of extremely talented players – Olympians; Brian Glencross, Don Smart, Don Martin and later with Terry Walsh and Terry Leece. State Players; Ron and Denis Glencross, David Hatt, Des Bassett, Trevor Gallagher, Leith Redgrave, Ian Harris, David Whitbread and Michael O’Reilly. During those years I also was privileged to have played against players of the calibre of all the legendry Pearse brothers, Kevin Carton, Bobby Andrews, Tony Waters and many others with real talent. The foresight of Peter Kennedy and a couple of his cronies saw the acceptance of Veterans into the State Hockey winter fixture program in 1980. From small beginnings in Perth Veterans has spread to many other countries due to the efforts of Peter and to those of Ted Jones, David Horsley and Bill Baldwin. I was secretary on the Vets committee chaired by Peter Gardner for eight years during the 80’s during which time Veterans teams in the winter competition grew from eight to eighty seven. Veterans provided me with opportunity to continue playing hockey, to represent the State at Championships all over Australia and to also represent Australia around the world including Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Brunei, UK, ( several times), Europe, ( Germany, Poland, Italy ), Malaysia, (several times),Singapore and Hong Kong. Wednesday Veteran hockey competition is one of the best in existence and due to the dedication of a number of people provides the opportunity for many players to participate in the game at a great venue with the bonus of fantastic social interaction afterward. To have been part of that scene for so long has been amazing and will be something I am going to miss greatly. However the time has come. There are circumstances that make it more difficult to be a regular participant in the sport and there are other activities I would like to pursue while I am still able. I have been very lucky over the years and have no regrets. Thanks go to all I have encountered during a very long time in the sport for making it so enjoyable. I will miss you all.” John joined YMCA Perth in 1956 and have played for that club since then. A list of notable achievements is below: WA COLTS ( Under 21 )

JUNIOR CARNIVAL Our 50th Junior Carnival is on this Sunday - 1st May As this is a major fund raising event for the club, "whole of club" assistance is required. SENIORS - Your services are requested for umpiring duties. The Senior Coords have requested assistance please oblige & honour your committment. You can also assist with other duties if umpiring requirements are filled. PARENTS - Your services are requested for ground scoring, assistance in the canteen & with the BBQ. If you are able to come down early - 7.30am - 8.00am, to assist in the canteen with sandwich & roll making this would be of great assistance to Di & the canteen ladies. Ground scorers - come to the announcers tent & see Sherryn. If during the course of the day, particularly during the lunch period, you see help is needed, please step forward. It is much easier if the load is shared, rather than a few people working all day because others do not volunteer. JUNIOR HOCKEY Enrolments for the J1/2 and J3/4 competitions that runs at Perry Lakes on a Saturday morning are still open. If you know of any children in grades 1-4 who may be keen to play hockey then please let Michael Jordon know (michaeljordon@iinet.net.au) For younger children or inexperienced hockey players (grade 1-4) we also have Saturday morning Minkey at Perry Lakes. Hockey will start shortly Keep reading the sportsman to find out exact dates and times Kersten Smith and Teagan Gmeiner at airport on their way home from Under 18 State Champs, both played well and WA came 4th

My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were $70!!! So I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web.
