Don’t play your sport to keep fit– Get fit to play your sport! Lack of fitness is a major cause of injury

What a busy weekend for hockey. If I was to give every event that took place last weekend its due, the Sportsman would run over 20 pages and Beth may have to exert editorial rights and cut some waffle. I have gone with the abridged version so I can stay friends with Beth. The 1s men played out an entertaining 7-0 win against Guildford and showed the form that they will need to be successful in the finals. UWA lost last weekend so our fellas finished top of the table!! Was excellent to see Graeme Begbie return to the field and look well in tune with the pace of the game. Its was the last game for Phil Dutoy (aka Ronan) and we will miss him. Phil coached the boys J5/6A team, played some great hockey and we wish him success for hockey in England. The 1s boys finals games start soon so try and get down to the finals games if you can to make some noise. The 1s women had a critical game although we did not wish to make too much of it before the game so nerves could remain calm. They fought splendidly and came out 3-1 winners against Old Aquinas and it means they ended well clear of relegation play-off games. Bad luck to Freo who have that joy, our heart bleeds for them. The team really rallied and special mention to Kirsten Wiseman who scored 4 goals in the last 2 games !! Enjoy the break girls and we look forward to a strong 2012. I know there were a bunch of other games at Shenton and the crowd was buzzing for much of the day. The next time most of you make it to Shenton you will be in a sea of blue as the new blue turf will be down. The turf will be out of action from mid September to close to the end of October. Did you know they will play the London Olympics with fluoro yellow balls on a blue turf?. The junior wind-ups were back at back at Perry Lakes and it was very pleasing to see so many smiling faces sitting down eager to shake the hands of coaches to accept their certificates. In a future edition of the Sportsman I will name and honour the coaches and managers but to everyone who dedicated their time to the junior teams please know the club, the players and the parents all appreciate your efforts. We often say we are a family club and the way the wind-ups went tells me that we are not dreaming. Parents, please encourage your friends kids to play hockey at YM. The Minkey wind-up was a pretty special affair led by the effervescent Phil Southern. Phil managed to get the 10 or so YMCC state senior and U21 players down to coach and hand out certificates. Minkey has been particularly successful this year and our numbers have grown so well done to Phil, the little Minksters and parents for getting involved. See you all next year !!

Perry lakes canteen crew had their 2nd last weekend for the year. The ladies and gents have every week displayed an unwavering professionalism and sense of humour. Last year the weekly sausage average was ~300. This year the 450 mark has regularly been cracked – a sizzling performance and thanks be for that second BBQ. If you can go to Nanga then it is a wonderful weekend and the club has been doing it on the same weekend for over 20 years. See the advert in this Sportsman. The Senior wind-up will be the 15th of October. Mark the date big kids. We would love to have as many there as possible including the vets. Until next week – ‘Carn the Y’.

Congratulations to Kersten Smith for her selection in the Australian Futures squad who will train later this year in Canberra.

Disappointing way to finish the season against a team that goes to #1 on the crap blokes list. Special mention to the vice pres for coming down and getting his marching orders (red varietal). First grass crab card for the season. You're welcome back anytime, and I'm sure the turfies will appreciate your actions.

Season Wrap Mens Metro 3Well the crab migration has finished -another season done and dusted. Our season never really got going after the optimistic pre season predictions. This was our year right? Although season glory was limited, some of the highlights included: Recruitment of two very crab like blokes Craig and Harves. Special mention to Harves for being a Port supporter and continuing on rocking up to our 'encouragement.' Big Red's big tat. Commendation about our behaviour after a Whitties game - we definitely are a moral bunch of blokes. Will never happen again though. My two twins wanting to bet against us for making the finals. Love your work Webbos. Frothies at Perrys. Big highlight. Good luck to everyone who made finals - CARN Y!! Coco

CANTEEN NEWS; Julie Spencer Last Saturday was the last official morning for the canteen ladies and we ended on a high with all 460 sausages sold

Thank you to the parents of the Boys 5/6 Regional White team for their assistance throughout the morning . This year the coffee tea stand has been so popular due to the wonderful cakes/slices that have supplied to by the teams rostered each week and last Saturday was no exception. We were particularly impressed with Marlene's chocolate fudge cake, rich chocolate fudge, topped with light chocolate mousse wrapped in smooth shaves of milk chocolate...a taste sensation. Is your mouth watering? Next Saturday there will be some Junior Semi Finals held at Perry Lakes in the morning starting at 10:00am and finishing around 1:00pm. There are no teams rostered to help, so if any one is available to assist on the BBQ or tea

.

and coffee stand, we will love to see you. Any donations of cakes/slices will be greatly welcomed

A blonde stood at the bank cashier's window and smiled. "I'd like to cash this cheque, please," she said, handing it over. The teller examined the cheque and said: "Could you identify yourself, Miss?" For a moment the girl's brow creased over, then she fumbled in her handbag and producing a mirror, glanced in it and with relief said, "Yes! It's me, all right!" The clerk said, "No Ma'am, you misunderstood me. We require a photo identification." The girl searched her bag again and found a picture with a group of people. "This is a recent family photo," she explained. "That's me, third from the left." No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery. I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me.
