YMCA of Brandon Annual Report 2015—2016

Tyril Froese Chair, Board of Directors

Lon Cullen President & CEO

The YMCA is and always will be about families. We all know that families come in all of shapes and sizes all of which can be found at the YMCA of Brandon. We have a couple in their 80’s who come together to participate in our Gentle Fit class, a program for seniors continuing to pursue and active lifestyle. A couple of our members such as Bud Leech have been members of our Y for over 60 years with their children having grown up in the Y and moved on to other communities and other Y’s across the country. We have single parent families such as Meghan and her son Rudy. Rudy is capably looked after in our Child Care program while Mom goes to work or gets some “me time” at the Y. They also can be seen together during the evening and weekends in our Family Swim, playing in the Play Structure or attending events like the Halloween Howl. Some families have been Y members for generations, with grandparents, parents and grand children having had memberships at the same time. A number of our staff such as Lisa, her daughter Kelsey and grandmother Gwenda fall into this category. We have families who have been here for generations and families who are just new to Canada. Not all of our families come to the Dood Cristall Family branch. Families who with two working parents rely on the Y to provide quality care Before and After School until the parents get home from work. Danielle Logan declares that this program is vital to families such as hers. Over sixty percent of our members join our Y as a part of a family, and we also have many families who use our facility without being members. Being a member or participant at the Dood Cristall Family YMCA in Brandon means you are a part of the family of YMCA’s across the country and indeed across the globe. Being part of the Y is much bigger than being a fitness participant or part of a swim lesson. You are part of a global community striving to foster a better world one member or one family at a time.

We were lucky enough to get a spot in the YMCA Child Care last August after having to bounce from daycare to daycare, where providers either decided to close or just weren’t reliable. I have been so impressed with the staff at the Y Child Care. My son, Rudy, is always excited to go and is learning so much every day. As a single parent, I am so thankful for the long hours that the Child Care Centre is open. I am able to go to the gym in the morning and drop Rudy off at YMCA Child Care knowing that he is safe and having fun while I am able to spend time on myself.

Meghan & Rudy Cronkite

Rudy and I also take advantage of the Family Swim, play structure, open gym, and fun family events like the Halloween Howl. The Y has really helped us stay healthy and active, while also giving me peace of mind as a parent. Thank you, YMCA Brandon!

My name is Danielle Logan, and I have two school aged children attending the YMCA Before & After Program at King George School. I found that enrolling your child in school is a relatively easy process, however, finding before and after school child care is not as straightforward. Working parents who need child care are faced with many tough questions: Who can I trust to look after my child? Where can my child go? How will my child get from that location safely to their school? What happens if the provider is sick or away on holidays? And, of course, will I be able to afford this? Thankfully, the Brandon YMCA offers Before & After school programming, and I believe this service is absolutely vital to families.

Danielle Logan speaking of her YMCA Before & After School experience at a United Way Luncheon

Working parents need a safe, caring, and reliable child care option for their school aged children and the YMCA offers this. The Before & After program ensures their staff have completed their criminal and child abuse registry checks, and are clear to work with children. There are no last minute cancellations, the Y program is always available and I have found that the staff genuinely care about your children. The Y Program aims to have a good balance of physical activity, craft time, outdoor play, free play, and special events to keep the kids engaged and entertained. My kids love playing with their friends at the Y, and my son often expresses to me that it is the best part of his day. As a parent, I have confidence sending my kids to the Before & After program, and I am sincerely grateful this program exists.

Seniors are an important part of our YMCA. Seniors have made—and continue to make—a profound contribution to our community. They represent a large and growing proportion of our population. We can all think of a senior who has made a difference in our lives. They are our mentors, teachers, grandparents and loved ones. They are volunteers and role models. They have contributed generously, building our families, communities, workplaces and country. Hitting the milestone age of 85 means that seniors at the YMCA of Brandon become Honourary Lifetime Members and do not pay for membership. Congratulations to the following Lifetime Members:
