Annual Report YMCA of 2016—2017 Brandon
Strong Communities Start Here This past year, the YMCA has served more people than ever. Not just members of the Y, but members of the community of Brandon as well. The Y does this in many locations, with partnerships and cooperation with many other community organizations. They include the City of Brandon, Canadian Tire Foundation for Families Jumpstart, the United Way of Brandon and Brandon School Division to name a few. All of these work to make the lives of our citizens healthier and our community stronger. Strong Kids Start Here The YMCA of Brandon added to its complement of licensed Child Care and school age care spaces in the last year with the addition of eight additional infant spaces at Y South as well as 15 Before School spaces at our Y New Era location. The Y made considerable investments in all of our centres, refreshing the kitchens at Y West and Y South as well as putting in a new play structure. The additions and enhancements contribute to our goal of being the premier provider of not- forprofit Child Care in Brandon, ensuring that all children get a strong start at a YMCA Child Care centre! Healthy Seniors Start Here The Y is not just for kids and families—we are here for our older citizens as well. We have land and water classes specifically devoted to active healthy living for seniors. Our GentleFit is a land class for seniors and the Live Y’ers can be found in the pool three times a week. For those seniors who want to work out on their own, our personal trainers can assist with a program designed for them. To promote healthy living, the YMCA provides a free membership to anyone over the age of 85. This year we inducted another 12 individuals into this category! Healthy Families Start Here The YMCA believes in helping families in our community. For many new Canadian families, the Y is a trusted and safe place to go when they first come to Brandon. Other families, like three generations of the Nguyens, come to the Y nearly every day. Our youth and children’s programming, such as the Before and After school program provide a safe and nurturing place for children to grow until parents can get home after work. Child Minding at the Y provides an opportunity for parents to work out knowing that their child is well cared for before they might go for Family swim. The Y is one of the few places in Brandon that offers something for the entire family. For over 130 years, the Y in Brandon has been helping families, seniors and children grow and thrive and be healthy by starting here!

An active senior, Mike joined the Y a couple of months ago. When Mike is not on the golf course, he can be found working out most mornings in the fitness centre. Since he started at the Y, he has developed new friendships and connections to others who, like him, believe that everyone should look after their health and wellness for their lifetime. Mike will tell everyone that the Y is a great place to belong. The staff and members are friendly and welcoming. Every senior should come to the Y!
The YMCA of Brandon is the largest provider of Child Care in our city. We provide care to 260 infants, preschool and nursery school children each day in our licensed Child Care facilities. The YMCA Child Care program is continuing to expand to better meet the needs of our community. At the same time, we are also upgrading our facilities. The children really enjoy the new Play Structure at Y South Early Learning Centre.

On any given school day, Dante and Sam can be seen in the gym at the Y. They are attending the Neelin Off Campus School and come to the Y to get their Phys Ed credits. Both of them are avid badminton players. The regular school program wasn’t working for them and the partnership between the school and the YMCA is helping them on the path to graduation. “I like coming to the Y because I feel welcome all the time. I like the facility and the people who run it.” Says Dante. Sam likes the atmosphere at the Y. “They make you feel good here and you meet new people.“ Both boys are also active in the community with Dante volunteering with the Bear Clan and Sam dancing at Pow Wows and other events.

The Nguyen family (also pictured on front cover): The YMCA of Brandon has given our family three generations of healthy living and has been a community haven. Our lives have changed because of the outpouring of love from this community and programs the YMCA provides. It has instilled independence and confidence in children, giving families such as ours more access to unlimited quality play resources. Thank you, YMCA, for all the special things you do. That is the power of community building!!
