LEARN GROW THRIVE STATEN ISLAND BROADWAY YMCA WINTER/SPRING 2013

WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

Improving our community’s health and well-being

In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

GET ENGAGED

We know firsthand how difficult it can be to find balance in life. That’s why we’re here with you every day, making sure that you, your family and our community have the resources and support needed to learn, grow and thrive.

With a focus on developing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being and giving back and supporting our neighbors, your participation will not just bring about meaningful change in yourself, but in your community too. Here are some of the ways you can get involved.

MEMBERSHIP

CHILD WATCH

Join the Broadway YMCA and become part of a community committed to helping you and your kids learn, grow and thrive. Y members receive full access to the facility’s Fitness Center, Pool, Gym and Locker Rooms; priority registration for classes and programs; discounts on classes and programs with a fee; and six guest passes each year to share with friends. The option for a Staten Island-wide membership allows you to use the other YMCA in the borough – the South Shore YMCA – which offers a quality facility and programs.

Do you need someone to look after your child (ages 6 months6 years) while you work out? We’re here for you! You may bring your child (for a maximum of two hours per day) to the YMCA Child Watch Program. Kids will enjoy creative play in a fun, safe environment with responsible Broadway YMCA staff members. This is a free service available to members only. Monday-Thursday 8:30am – 1:00pm AND 5:00pm – 9:00pm Friday- Saturday 8:30am – 1:00pm Sunday 8:45am - 1:00pm

When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood. As a program volunteer, board member or Strong Kids Campaign fundraiser, you can make a difference for our Y and the community as a whole.

You can’t be the best parent you can be unless you take care of your own health in spirit, mind and body. With your child (6 – 12 years) under the care of our trained staff in Kid Zone, we can give you up to two hours of peace of mind to work out, take a class or just relax. Through services like Kid Zone, we engage and nurture youth with positive experiences that encourage them to learn, grow and thrive. Parents must remain in the facility while children participate in Kid Zone.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME

We’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistance for programs or membership. We’re happy to help.

We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our annual Strong Kids Campaign. Contributions to Strong Kids enable us to offer a number of our programs and services at low or no cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable. The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyone can be a part of the Y?

REBUILDING LIVES RESTORING HOPE

STATEN ISLAND YMCA COUNSELING SERVICE

Serena Stonick – Chair, Staten Island YMCA Counseling Service Committee of Management Jacqueline Fiore – Executive Director, Staten Island YMCA Counseling Service – jfiore@ymcanyc.org

We can help. Contact us today. PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Little Steps is an expressive art and play therapeutic program for children (ages 5-17) whose lives have been affected by

their family’s use of drugs or alcohol. The program offers expressive activities through which children learn to identify and change patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior.

Adolescent Programs focus on adolescents and young adults (ages 12-21) who are displaying high-risk behaviors and attitudes as well as those teens who are struggling with alcohol and/or drug use. Through group and individual treatment, we work to empower young people to achieve a positive, productive and drug-free lifestyle.

Friday Night Club is a positive alternative group that is free and open to youth (ages 11 – 15) who are interested in

making their Friday nights fun, interactive and productive. This group will engage youth in Teen Night programming at the YMCA, in-house life skills building activities and trips to explore all Staten Island and NYC have to offer.

Youth/Adolescent Anger Management is open to youth (ages 5 – 11) and adolescents

(ages 12 – 17). Anger Management is a 12-week program that seeks to reduce anger and improve coping skills in our young people. This program is designed to combat unhealthy core beliefs, promote responsible behavior and enhance quality of life. There is a nominal fee for this program.

Parenting Skills is a 12-week program aimed at enhancing knowledge and understanding of the multi-faceted issues involved in parenting. These classes take an in-depth look at child development, communication, discipline, child/family health, learning/play, stress, nutrition, budget, substance abuse, family violence and teen behavior. There is a nominal fee for this program.

Family Association is open to the community and is a network of parents, spouses,

guardians and other family members. This group meets weekly, providing a supportive venue where individuals can learn new skills for dealing with the complex issues associated with living with a family member’s addiction.

Adult Programs help chemically-dependent adults work toward recovery from addiction through group and individual

treatment. This not only means accepting their struggles with substances, but also facing the relationship problems, economic hardships or personal issues that may be contributing to their use of drugs and/or alcohol. Adult services include programming for individuals struggling with mental health and substance use disorders as well as those utilizing medication to support their recovery efforts.

If you, a family member or someone close to you is struggling with alcoholism or substance abuse, do not wait to call.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS Y EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

The YMCA believes that a quality program should provide enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each individual child by working in partnership with families. YMCA Early Child Development programs, licensed by the New York City Department of Health, provide a nurturing environment where children’s natural curiosity is a springboard to learning skills that are necessary for success in school. Children learn how to share, take turns and work in groups. They also develop ageappropriate skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics. Imaginative play, art projects and hands-on experience will spark your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong, positive values. For additional information, or to arrange a tour, call Allison Sicuranza, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 981-4933 or asicuranza@ymcanyc.org.

Nursery School (Age 3 years)

Our Nursery School program offers full-day and half-day options. Classrooms are staffed with a licensed Early Childhood teacher and a qualified teacher’s assistant who will encourage your child through hands-on learning experiences. Gym and movement activities as well as weekly swim instruction for 3 and 5 day classes are included.

Children must be born in 2010 and toilet trained. A Birth Certificate is required. To register, parents are required to complete a registration form and pay $100 non-refundable deposit that will be applied towards tuition payments. The amounts below represent annual fee once divided by 10 payments. Nursery Program Options
