Y members receive full access to the facility’s Fitness Center, Gym and Locker rooms; priority registration for classes and programs; discounts on classes and programs with a fee; and six guest passes each year to share with friends. The option for a Citywide membership allows you to use any of the other YMCAs in the boroughs, each of which offers quality facilities and programs... and a swimming pool.
Child Watch Do you need someone to look after your child (ages 1-7) while you work out? We’re here for you! You may bring your child (for a maximum of two hours per day) to the YMCA Child Watch Program. Kids will enjoy creative play in a fun, safe environment with responsible YMCA staff members. This is a free service available to members only. Please register at the Member Services Desk in advance.

MUSIC AND MOVEMENT Formerly known as Busy Bodies, it is a child’s first gym class. It emphasizes on large motor groups. After a short song and stretch time, children burn off energy on the equipment under the supervision of a grown up. The instructor works with each child’s individual strength. STORY, SONG AND SHIMMY Formerly known as Tunes for Tots. Join us on our journey through theme-based classes that combine music, movement and art. Children experience a fun-filled, imaginative and interactive class where all the senses are stimulated. They express themselves through creative movement, singing, dancing and exploring a variety of instruments. The instructor engages the children using puppets, scarves, props, and sing-a-long stories. Group games with brightly colored balls of all sizes and even a parachute and bubbles are part of the excitement! Each session culminates with a variety of thematic hands-on art activities including crayons, paints and clay. Family aquatics The YMCA is the pioneer in swimming lessons and water safety. We offer a variety of progressive aquatics programs for all ages and fitness levels. YMCA Swim instruction is delivered in a student-centered, caring atmosphere with well-trained instructors who give personalized attention. Lessons are designed to be developmentally appropriate and to quickly and effectively teach skills and encourage students to develop a lifelong interest in aquatics. The primary objective is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and on dry land, while the parent will become aware of how to teach his or her child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. The ParentChild program has four levels, all determined by age. Classes meet once per week. Parent or guardian must be able to participate with child in the water.

Beginner I This class is for the child old enough or just shy of the age for our Pike class, and still enjoys/needs the comfort of their parent in the water with them. Interaction includes parent/ child and instructor/child to help transition children to be ready to be comfortable with their instructors. This class covers the same skills and topics as our Pike class, which helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water. It also teaches basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, proper use of Instructional Flotation Devices and Personal Flotation Devices, and comfort with holding the face in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.
Babies start to become comfortable in the water and curious about blowing bubbles. Songs incorporate gestures that encourage them to scoop.
NEW! GYM & SWIM A great way to introduce your infant/toddler to the gym & pool. This class will get your child comfortable in the water, learn basic gymnastic skills, and make new friends in a warm, welcoming environment. The gym and swim combo class combines songs, movement, and water exploration to develop gross motor, cognitive, and social skills in infants and young toddlers. After 45 minutes of structured games and activities in the gym the class will transition to the pool for a 30 minute parent/child swim lesson including songs, skills and games.

EARLY CHILDHOOD Programs | 6 mos. - 6 yrs. CO-OP NURSERY SCHOOL | 2.4 – 6 yrs. The West Side YMCA Co-op Nursery School was founded in 1964 by a group of parents in the Lincoln Center area who wanted greater involvement in their children’s first school experience. Starting from a single classroom with 30 children, one teacher, and a daily parent assistant, the school today comprises 10 classes serving 130 children between the ages of 2 to 5 yrs. PARENT INVOLVEMENT The Co-op Nursery values the presence and involvement of parents. Parents have the child’s extraordinary opportunity to share their child’s school experience, to form strong relationships with the teachers and witness the energy and excitement of and Early Childhood classroom. By participating in the classroom on a regular basis, parents are able to see curriculum develop, to see the children interact and to gain a true understanding of the work of a teacher and the value of their child’s school experience. In the 3’s and 4’s classrooms “Helping Parent” begins in October, with each family participating on a rotating basis. “Helping Parent” in the 2’s program begins in January. Each family can expect to be a “Helping Parent” every 3 to 4 weeks. In addition to the “Helping Parent” responsibility, every Co-op family serves on one of several school committees, which sponsor school events and strengthen the school community. PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM We believe strongly that young children learn through their play and hands on experiences. The Co-op Nursery School offers a rich, supportive learning and socialization environment for young children. Social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth is fostered through a balanced, developmentally based program For our youngest children, this means a special emphasis on the process of separation, adjustment to the school routine, and discovering the joys of new friends, teachers, activities and language. The 3 year-olds continue on this same journey, strengthening and refining social and physical skills, enjoying their role as a member of a group and the pure joy of discovering learning. At the Co-op Nursery, we value each child’s unique personality and temperament. Children need time to explore, experiment and play in their own way. Our daily program includes free-choice activities, outdoor play, group time, story time and music time. In addition to plenty of open-ended play, there are several special projects or activities daily including cooking, science, art and field trips. Social development is at the core of our program. We want our children to feel that they are liked, respected and to be confident learners in their classrooms. As a part of the West Side YMCA, the school places great emphasis on physical development and community awareness. Unique to our program are weekly swim, music and science classes. FACILITY Housed in the West Side YMCA - an architectural treasure! The Co-op Nursery School has six spacious, well-equipped classrooms. Children and parents enjoy recreational and educational opportunities throughout the YMCA, including use of one of the two pools, which are kept at a temperature comfortable for children; and gym, music and science classes. The children play outdoors on the rooftop playground or in Central Park. In September 2001, the West Side YMCA new McBurney Annex was completed and by September 2001 the Co-op Nursery moved into six state of the art classrooms. The new facility is equipped with: • Classrooms with pediatric toilets • Resource/library room • Art Room • Indoor and outdoor play space
STAFF Each class has a one head teacher, an assistant teacher and a “Helping Parent”. Many of the faculty members hold advanced degrees in Early Childhood Education or in a related field. The Co-op Nursery School also has specialists in music, science, art, gym and swimming. PROGRAM The Co-op Nursery School operates from mid-September to mid-June and follows the school calendar recommended by the Parent’s League of New York. Two-year-old children attend school either two or three mornings a week or three afternoons. Three year-olds attend either five mornings or three afternoons a week and four year-olds attend five full days a week. ADMISSIONS Parents interested in the school should call in the Fall prior to the September entry to make an appointment for a tour. The school requires that each child participate in a playgroup experience with a member of our staff. After the school has received a completed application and fee, a date for the playgroup will be arranged with you by the school. Financial assistance is available. Contact the school’s office for an application. All applications are due by December 1st. The school welcomes students of any race, color, gender, religion and national or ethnic origin. It does not discriminate in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial assistance program or other school-administered programs. Tender Care, is our child care center for children six months through 5 years of age, opened in 1986 at the West Side YMCA. Designed to provide flexible child care for working parents, Tender Care is open Monday - Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM. Approximately 60 percent of the children attend the center on a full-time basis, leaving openings in each classroom for families that need part-time care. The children in the Tender Care program are divided into three age groups – Tender Care I with children ages 6 months - 2 years, Tender Care II with children 2 - 3.5, and Tender Care III with children 3.5 - 5 years. These groups provide children with a classroom experience that best meets their developmental needs. PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM Tender Care is committed to providing a safe, supportive living and learning environment for young children. It offers a nurturing, yet challenging program for children who are enrolled on a full-time basis, as well as an early group experience for children who attend part-time. Teachers create a warm and loving atmosphere while offering a developmentally-based, engaging curriculum, where children can play, discover and learn. Tender Care values each child’s unique personality and temperament. The development of independence, trust and initiative is fostered through a balanced program of free play and structure, quiet and active play, and group and individual time. Learning centers in each room include science, dramatic play, block building, library, art, music and manipulative materials. The children in Tender Care go outdoors each day and take advantage of the many play spaces in Central Park. In addition, there are special classes in swimming, science, gym, music and art. Social development is at the core of our program. We want our children to feel that they are liked, respected and an integral part of the life in the classroom. Tender Care functions as a close-knit community of teachers, children and families. Each child develops a strong sense of community and belonging. This is a child’s first experience in the pool without parental assistance. The children are taught the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. They also learn about pool safety, boating safety, and the use of personal flotation devices. Children are assigned to classes according to their ability. All classes meet once per week. YOUTH THEATER ARTS KIDS COMPANY MUSICAL THEATER PROGRAM One of New York City’s newest youth performing arts company, Kids Company provides young people of all backgrounds and experience levels the opportunity to work with industry musical theater professionals to develop skills in singing, acting, and choreography. Kids Company is made up of children and teens ages 6 through 14 who will learn and grow together as an ensemble to create fully realized musical productions performed in the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater. Our production and showcase programs provide in-depth musical theater experiences to help your child develop their technique in acting, voice, and movement/dance. At the end of the program, you’ll get to watch them sing and dance live in front of a public audience. “My child’s confidence has improved tremendously during her time with Kids Company. JR. KNICKS BASKETBALL The YMCA of Greater New York. Jr. Knicks Program is a competitive basketball league with a strong instructional base for New York City boys and girls ages 9-17. POLLIWOG | 6 - 11 yrs. Introductory Level This is the beginning level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball (lead-up game to water polo) movements. Children can swim across the pool without assistance by the end of this level.
FISH | 6 - 11 yrs. Intermediate Skill Level At this point, students work to perform the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl stroke, and sidestroke, with turns. They are introduced to the butterfly stroke. The West Side YMCA provides young people with a safe space to socialize, seek support and participate in activities that build self-esteem, prepare them for higher education and success as an adult. As part of the Youth & Family Department, the Teen Center works intentionally to build the developmental assets of young people as they transition into adulthood. WEST SIDE Y TEEN LOUNGE | 13 - 18 yrs. Want to meet new friends? The Y provides a supervised safe haven where teens engage with their fellow peers and build social and recreational skills. Our lounge houses a pool table, Ping-Pong table, foosball table, TV’s, computers, an extensive library, Wifi and numerous activities in a drop-in, informal setting. The Y-MVP Eight-Week Fitness Challenge puts teens (ages 12 – 17) on a fitness path by engaging them in fun physical activities and teaching them skills to develop exercise routines that work for them. Y-MVP participants meet as a class for 60 minutes once a week, for eight weeks, during out-of-school hours, and are expected to complete an additional 60-minute “fitness mission” in between classes. The Mellis Youth Handball program will provide youth the ability to receive the guidance and accessibility necessary to develop and maintain a love of the game. PIRANHAS SWIM TEAM | 6 - 18 yrs. The Piranhas swim team is a competitive, age group team. Workouts include endurance, speed, and drill technique. Lead by Head Coach Hugo Salhuana, the Piranhas compete with other Ys, clubs and attend other invitational every month. The Piranhas have attended the NY State YMCA Championships every year since 1999 and YMCA Nationals 3 times. If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over the course of 16 one-hour sessions. After the initial 16 core sessions, participants meet monthly for added support to help them maintain their progress.
PROGRAM GOALS: • Reduce body weight by 7% • Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

Dive in Adult aquatics The YMCA is the pioneer in swimming lessons and water safety. We offer a variety of progressive aquatics programs for all ages and fitness levels. YMCA Swim instruction is delivered in a student-centered, caring atmosphere with well-trained instructors who give personalized attention. Lessons are designed to be developmentally appropriate and to quickly and effectively teach skills and encourage students to develop a lifelong interest in aquatics. Adult Stroke Clinic This is a class for swimmers, men and women 18 and over. Age groups: 18-24, 25-29, 30-35, 35-39, and so on at 5-year increments. We offer a variety of evening workouts in our large pool. Workouts typically have one instructor on deck. Workouts are for 1 hour on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 - 9 PM and Sundays 6 - 7 PM. We swim an average of about 2,000 to 3,000 yards. The lanes vary by the swimmers’ ability and speed. The Adult Stroke Clinic is not a “learn to swim“ program, but we do offer the opportunity for all levels to receive instruction on technique. In this class, we do swim all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Tuesday & Thursday

IT’S ABOUT THE WHOLE PERSON HEALTH & WELL-BEING FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The Y and LIVESTRONG joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

Adult arts information ARTS DEPARTMENT POLICIES | PAYMENTS ARE DUE IN FULL PRIOR TO THE START OF THE 1ST CLASS PRORATING POLICY Prorating is not granted for any students joining a class late or leaving a class early. CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY All classes must have a minimum number of students in order to begin. If registration falls short of this minimum the class will be cancelled. Contact the Community Arts Department to see if your class is running prior to the first class. Credits will be applied to the accounts of anyone who pays for a class that gets cancelled. FINANCIAL AID Financial assistance is available for qualified applicants and can be applied to any Community Arts program. The writer’s voice: New directions Founded in 1981, the West Side YMCA Writer’s Voice is one of New York City’s longest-running and well respected writing programs. Writer’s Voice continues to nurture writers of introductory and advanced levels in genres such as fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and writing for the stage and screen. Thaddeus Rutkowski is a graduate of Cornell University and The Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of the novels Haywire, Tetched and Roughhouse. Haywire reached No. 1 on Small Press Distribution’s fiction best-seller list. All three books were finalists for an Asian American Literary Award, and Haywire won the Members’ Choice Award. He was awarded a 2012 fellowship in fiction writing from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He has been a resident writer at Yaddo, MacDowell and other colonies and has reviewed books for The New York Times and other papers. Charles Salzberg is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Esquire, New York Magazine, Elle, the New York Times Book Review, the New York Times Arts and Leisure, and GQ. Do something you love Artworks The ArtWorks program offers a variety of classes in the visual arts, including ceramics, stained glass, drawing, and water-color. We have been offering craft classes to the Upper West Side community for over 30 years. The diversity of classes includes all levels of handbuilding and wheel as well as photo ceramics, majolica and other specialized techniques. This is a friendly, supportive studio with ample open time for you to practice as well as learn from others. Open Studio Time is available in all studios whenever there are not classes scheduled. We have monthly exhibits in our two lobby cases of work made in the ArtWorks studios both by students and faculty members. Please come by to see them or follow us on Facebook under ArtWorks. ZEN OF POTTERY | Julie Terestman Beginning/Intermediate Wheel Investigate how the activity of making pottery can be a wonderful vehicle for quieting the mind. In this class we will learn and develop various skills of working on the wheel, while exploring how at whatever level this can be a useful means for cultivating the practice of mindfulness.

Join the Cause Membership Information Mission The YMCA of Greater New York is a community service organization that promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind and body, welcoming all people with a focus on youth. Policy of Non-Discrimination YMCA membership is available to all persons regardless of race, religion, gender, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or financial circumstances. The YMCA welcomes families and persons of all ages, income levels, and physical conditions with an emphasis on responsibility and self-improvement. Membership Guarantee Membership in the YMCA is fully guaranteed. Members who are not completely satisfied with their YMCA membership are entitled to a refund of any unused portion of their membership. Membership Cards Membership Card The Branch membership card must be presented and scanned in order to gain access into a YMCA facility.
Program cards Program members will be issued a card granting them YMCA access for their program. This card must be presented and scanned for access into the YMCA facility and/or a specific program.
Lost Cards Please let us know if your card is lost or stolen. There is a fee to issue a replacement card.
Membership Cancellation Cancellation of membership requires a fifteen (15) day written notice prior to the monthly draft date. Membership Transfer Membership and program privileges are not transferable from one person to another. Membership Holds Members may put their membership on hold for 1 - 3 months during any calendar year. A monthly hold fee will be charged and all membership privileges will be suspended while your membership is on hold. Payment Options & Information • Membership dues must be up-to-date in order to use facility. • Rates and schedules are subject to change. • Membership may be paid in full by cash, personal checks, MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover cards. • Monthly payments are payable by credit card or bank draft only (excluding Discover). There is no cash option for monthly payments. • If a check or an automatic back draft is returned for insufficient funds a service fee of $15.00 will be added to the payment amount.
Registration Information Guest and Day Passes All YMCA members are given 6 complimentary guest passes per year to help introduce the Y to friends and associates. Branch members are welcome to visit other YMCA locations within NYC 10 times per year at no charge. Day passes are available to purchase. Camera Policy For the privacy and security of all—especially our kids and teens—we do not allow any photo or video recording without permission from the Executive Director.

Locker Rooms & Lockers • Lockers are available for daily use. Please bring your own lock and secure your belongings when using the facility. • Our family-friendly locker room is a good alternative for parents who wish to accompany their child that is over the age of five and of the opposite gender. YMCA “AWAY” policy AWAY (Always Welcome at the YMCA) As a YMCA member, you have access to YMCAs across the country and around the world. You must present a valid YMCA ID to be eligible to use AWAY privileges. Call ahead to check on individual branch policies.

TOUCH-A-TRUCK Is an annual, hands-on, interactive event that provide children with the opportunity to touch, climb on, sit in, and experience up close many of the trucks and vehicles they see in their everyday lives while learning from the professionals who drive them. Saturday, May 17 10 AM - 4 PM

Get oriented. Not sure how to use the equipment or what you should be doing? Orientations are free for all members! 2. Just ask. We’re here to help! 3. If there’s a problem with any of the equipment or the facility, please let a staff person know. If there’s an incident or accident, contact a uniformed staff person immediately.
5. Help us keep the Y clean. Wipe off equipment after each use. Return all equipment when finished with it. Take your personal items with you. Remove the plates from lifting bars when you’re done. Don’t bring food, open containers or coffee cups into the center.
