CHILD WATCH Do you need someone to look after your child (up to 10 years old) while you work out? We’re here for you! You may bring your child (for a maximum of two hours per day) to the YMCA Child Watch Program. Kids will enjoy creative play in a fun, safe environment with responsible YMCA staff members. This service is provided FREE of

YMCA of Greater New York’s Brooklyn Branches Partner with the
Partnership with the Barclays/Nets Community Alliance allows the YMCA of Greater New York to provide Brooklyn’s children and families in need with financial assistance and free and subsidized programs that are dedicated to building the foundations of community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. From Greenpoint down to the tip of Coney Island, the YMCA is making lasting personal and social change all throughout Brooklyn through our Strong Kids Campaign. With seven facilities in Brooklyn and numerous off-site locations, we serve close to 160,000 people each year—approximately 58,000 being youth, as a second home for our community to learn, grow and thrive. Through support from the Barclays/Nets Community Alliance, we will continue to provide free and low cost programming such as our Y Afterschool programs that provide enriching curriculum for close to 3,000 kids during the critical hours of 3-6pm and more than 2,600 youth participants in our summer camp program; support thousands of families in need through thousands of dollars in program and membership financial assistance; and remain a safe haven and resource center for over 2,200 enrollments in our New Americans Welcome Center; and so much more. GREENPOINT Y EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Toddler & Little Kid | Ages 2 – 5 years* The Early Childhood Center at the Greenpoint YMCA serves children ages two to five years. In our nurturing classroom environments, each child receives individualized attention and is empowered to make creative choices based on his or her own interests. Emphasis is placed on project based learning, which allows learning to be a collaborative and exploratory process. The center offers a multicultural curriculum that focuses on all areas of development. Our experienced and dedicated staff is committed to providing a positive first-school experience for you and your child. The role of the teachers is to guide children’s collaboration with peers and provoke and stimulate thinking.
registration process for 2012 Before entering the program, an annual medical record must be handed in by the parent(s) on the child’s behalf. Medical forms will not be accepted via fax. The form will remain in the child’s file during the year, and expires a year from the date signed by the doctor. Please be sure the form comes from the Greenpoint Y Early Childhood Director as it is part of our compliance with the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene under which we are licensed. SCHEDULE Our program runs Monday-Friday from 8AM-6PM, and follows the Department of Education calendar. Children must be fully potty trained to qualify for enrollment.
PLACEMENT Our Early Childhood Center is based on the Reggio Emilia approach to education. We are committed to creating the most beneficial conditions for learning that will enhance and facilitate children’s construction of “his or her own powers of thinking through the synthesis of all the expressive, communicative and cognitive languages” (Edwards and Forman, 1993).
Children are placed in classrooms based on their date of birth. Children who are placed in the older classroom must choose a five-day schedule. Example: 5 school days or 5 full days. Children who are placed in the younger classroom have the options of choosing 5, 3 and 2 full days; 5,3 and 2 school days or 4 and 2 half days.

PRE-K PROGRAMS TUITION Tuition is due on the 15th of the month prior to care. All payments made after the 15th are subject to a $25 late fee. There are no refunds or credits issued for missed days or holidays.

Y EARLY CHILDHOOD WAITLIST Currently, our Early Childhood program has a waitlist. In order to be placed on the waitlist, children must be eligible to enter our program by the following September. This year, parents or guardians may place a child on our waitlist between September 1, 2012 and December 18, 2012. There is a $25 fee to place a child on the waitlist. The list expires each June, and each childâ€™s name must be resubmitted in order to request a slot for the following school year. *Our waitlist policy changed as of September 2011. If your child was placed on the list prior to 2011, your place on the list will be honored, and there is no need to reapply.

My Grown Up and Me Classes offer caretakers and children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years an opportunity to play with peers, explore new ideas and opportunities, become familiar with the Y community, and adjust to a classroom setting.

Ages 18 months-3 years Busy Beginners is a parent participation program designed to provide children with an opportunity for socialization and exploration in a small group setting. Sensory activities, music, large and small motor skills are woven into this fun-filled class.

Ages 18 months-3 years Petit Picassos is an art class child and grownup are able to explore together. Children will gain confidence as they freely express themselves through various art mediums.

Ages 18 months-3 years Bending & Bopping is a two-part class that combines yoga with music and movement. You and your child will move through simple yoga poses that encourage movement and help maintain flexibility. After all that bending, you and your child can “shake those sillies” out with fun songs, games and obstacle courses.

Ages 18 months-3 years Children’s bodies were made to move! This class offers little ones the opportunity to run and play in our gym, and then

SWIM for LIFE
Through various aquatic programs, the Y not only helps develop swimming and water safety skills, but also focuses on members' needs, as well as those of the community. From preschoolers to adults, overcoming fear of the water and developing water and swimming skills are rewarding. And, it promotes better health as a physical activity that can be performed throughout life.
Pre-school aquatics | 3-5 yrs
These 30 minute swim classes are the childâ€™s first experiences in the pool without parental assistance. The children are taught the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. They learn pool safety, stroke development, personal flotation (PFDâ€™s) and boating safety. The classes are taught by caring YMCA swimming instructors, classes are kept to a ratio of 1:6 so the instructors can provide the participants with both group and individual attention. Pike | 3-5 YRS
Beginner In this beginner class, children begin attending the classes without parental assistance. Children will develop safe pool behavior, adjust to water and develop independent swimming movements in the water. It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort in holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.

Ray | 3-5 YRS
Advanced Beginner This advanced beginner class is held in water depth of 5 1/2 feet; at this level, children review previous skills, improve stroke skills, build endurance by swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water properly. Participants MUST be comfortable in the water, show ability to put their face in the water and be able to swim 5 yards without the assistance of the instructor. Children can swim across the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level.
Starfish | 3-5 YRS
Advanced Beginner II Children at this level review previously learned skills and refine their crawl and back strokes and floating skills. They also learn underwater swimming skills. Children can swim the length of the pool on the front and back at the end of this level.

Y AFTERSCHOOL AT THE GREENPOINT Y | GRADES PRE-K-5 The Greenpoint Y provides a safe and fun place for children to learn and build meaningful adult and peer relationships. Focus is placed on our values of respect, responsibility, honesty & caring. Our program offers a variety of activities using the project based learning model. We offer homework help, projects in math and science, physical fitness, recreational activities, swimming, and other fun activities. Projects culminate in events or activities where students may showcase their work and sharpen their presentation skills. Our qualified staff are trained in CPR & first aid. Upon registration, the child must have a youth membership, $135/year. In addition, a $100 non-refundable deposit is required, which will be applied to June tuition. CATERPILLAR CAMP | AGES 3-4 Caterpillars will have the opportunity to participate in swimming, outdoor and dramatic play, all sorts of art projects, music, movement and exciting performances. Summer camp is a great time for your child to get to know our YMCA and make lots of friends.
BUMBLEBEE CAMP | AGES 5 Bumblebees will have the opportunity to participate in swimming (twice per week), outdoor time where they will play sports and have recreation, gym time, and exploration time in our new center-based classrooms designed with educational and stimulating manipulatives for their age group.

FIREFLY CAMP | AGES 7 to 9 Fireflies will have the opportunity to participate in club based activities that will extend over the whole summer. Campers will swim (twice per week), sing songs, dance, act, chant and participate in ongoing thematic based workshops. We aim to stimulate the campers mind with project based learning activities.
DRAGONFLY CAMP | AGES 10 to 12 Dragonflies are spreading their wings into pre-teen years and will enjoy a customized camp that allows them to participate in projects designed for older children. Campers will swim, work on extended projects, performances, have mentorship and service learning opportunities and explore their local and extended area through additional trips and outings designed to engage and introduce them to new experiences.

Y AFTERSCHOOL KIDS IN CONTROL (KIC) Y AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM AT PS 84 | GRADES K-5 September-June | The K.I.C Y Afterschool program at P.S. 84 program is responsible for delivery of high-quality developmental care for children in grades K-5. We provide quality services that meet the needs of youth and families in the Williamsburg community, utilizing evidence-based practices and project base learning. Our primary focus is the development of our youth. At the K.I.C. Y Afterschool program, the staff provides positive, values-based activities such as performing arts, prevention services, healthy living activities, group work, creative writing, academic support, mentoring as well as recreational sports. Best of all, the children learn about themselves, their values and potential, while making friends and life-long memories. The K.I.C Y Afterschool program is made possible through funding from the New York State Office Alcohol & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Youth Enrichment programs EXPLORER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM | Ages 4-12 Our Explorers Club Enrichment Program is designed to allow parents to build their own afterschool program for children. Sign up for a class as a stand-alone activity or use the program to enrich your childâ€™s experience in our traditional Y afterschool program on select days. Children in the Explorerâ€™s Club can be dropped off by parents or picked up by Y staff directly from certain local schools for an additional fee for the hour classes. IS YOUR SCHOOL PART OF THE YMCA’S SWIM FOR LIFE-2ND GRADE SWIM? Second grade is an ideal time for young people to take on new challenges, learn more skills and enhance their feelings of mastery and competence. Through Swim for Life, the YMCA of Greater New York seeks to offer children lessons in swimming skills and water safety that will keep them safe and build physical and social skills.
Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim works to build on student’s aquatic skills, while enhancing self-confidence and well-being. Classes run in ten-week cycles during the academic year during school hours. Children are brought to their school’s local YMCA by school personnel who will remain with them throughout the changing process and at the pool area during swim lessons. Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim students progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curriculum that incorporates the following five components:
What better way to enjoy a spring day than to blast off a rocket into the bright blue sky! This class will use kits as well as raw materials to build an array of rockets and racecars.
1. Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around the water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught.

The YMCA helps Youth develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction through the five Y swim lessons components, Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Stroke Development, Water Games, and Rescue.
YOUTH aquatics | 6-12 yrs

Guppy This is an intermediate beginner level for school-age children. The children will continue to practice and build upon basic skills. They will be introduced to lead up strokes, front and back stroke and the breaststroke whip kick. The ability to tread water for 1 minute is required to attend this class.
BEGINNER Polliwog I
This is the beginner level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball movements.
Polliwog II This is the advanced beginner level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. This is a intermediate level for school-age children. The children will continue to refine their lead up stroke. They are introduced to breast-stroke pull and how to combine the whip kick and pull in unison. They will also start to work on endurance and lap swimming.
Flying Fish This is an advanced beginner class where students will work on improving crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl stroke, and side-stroke, with turns. They are introduced to the butterfly stroke and continue to build endurance.
Jr. Knicks | 7-11
Shark The students at this level continue to improve their strokes, with starts and turns, and are introduced to the inverted breaststroke, the crawl, and the overarm sidestroke. Opportunities are provided for further work on synchronized swimming, wetball, and skin diving.
Porpoise This is the final level for advanced swimmers. Swimmers will continue to work on form and endurance. They will learn new strokes and basic rescue skills. Once completed, participants will be confident swimmers.

Overall, the program aims to build feelings of competence and confidence in youth to enhance their self-esteem. Good sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play are themes for all practices and games. Aquatics policies & procedures Determining Your Child’s Swim Level To help determine your child’s swim level, please refer to the descriptions of the swim levels provided in this brochure. Your child must be able to perform ALL the skills in the previous level to be enrolled into the next level. Children learn physical skills at different rates; therefore, it is very common for children to repeat a level. All children will be swimtested the first day of the session to determine if they are registered for the appropriate class. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant who they feel is not enrolled in the appropriate level into the correct level.
Swim Lesson Policies Although we strive for consistency in the teaching staff, there are occasions when a substitute teacher will be necessary. This is a better alternative than canceling a lesson. While we encourage parents to discuss their child’s swim progress with the swim instructors, to help classes start on time please request an appointment with the instructor if time between classes does not permit for a complete discussion.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. Classes missed due to weather, holidays when the YMCA remains open, or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the lesson, there will be no credits, or make up lessons given. Private swim lessons are non-refundable.
3. If a participant withdraws (with approval) from a swim class at least 1 week (7 days) in advance of the start of class, he or she will receive a full refund. A 50% refund will be granted to participants who withdraw (with approval) after attending 2 classes or less. No refund will be granted to participants who withdraw after the second class.

Kettlebells is a total body workout that blends highly effective techniques for improving muscular endurance, total body coordinated movements and cardiovascular conditioning. Each movement and progression is taught with an emphasis on safety, highlighting essential body alignment. Take your body to the next level with Kettlebell training! Mat Pilates Based on original Pilates techniques, this class is designed to restore muscle balance, improve posture, help prevent injury and build strength and flexibility. All levels welcome.
aquatics Aqua Exercise An instructional class of aerobic movements performed in the water, to improve body conditioning, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. This program is FREE for members.
Water Workout A high energy, non-impact water aerobic class including strength training and stretching. This program is FREE for members.

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise for people of all ages. It can be used for exercise, fun, and even lifesaving. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that helps build endurance. FAMILY SERVICES AT OUR KIDS IN CONTROL (KIC) CENTER Recognizing the impact family life has on child development, the KIC program, located at 224 Berry Street in Williamsburg provides a range of family services including group,individual and family counseling, parenting workshops and parent support groups, health awareness forums, English as a Second Language classes, community workshops and teen programs. These 30-minute classes are for children 6-36 months and their parents. The primary objective of the class is to get both parent/guardian and child comfortable in the water. The child will become aware of the differences between moving through the water and on dry land, while the parent/guardian will become aware how to teach the child to be safer in and around the water. Classes are designed to allow the child to have fun in the water while the parent/guardian guides him or her to learn aquatic skills. The child will become exposed to songs and games that use basic movements in the water such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Guest and Day Passes All YMCA members are given 6 complimentary guest passes per year to help introduce the Y to friends and associates. Branch members are welcome to visit other YMCA locations within NYC 10 times per year at no charge. Day passes are available to purchase.
Camera Policy For the privacy and security of all—especially our kids and teens—we do not allow any photo or video recording without permission from the Executive Director.
Locker Rooms & Lockers • Lockers are available for daily use. Please bring your own lock and secure your belongings when using the facility. • Our family-friendly locker room is a good alternative for parents who wish to accompany their child that is over the age of five and of the opposite gender.
YMCA “AWAY” policy AWAY (Always Welcome at the YMCA) As a YMCA member, you have access to YMCAs across the country and around the world. You must present a valid YMCA ID to be eligible to use AWAY privileges. Call ahead to check on individual branch policies.

If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over the course of 16 one-hour sessions. After the initial 16 core sessions, participants meet monthly for added support to help them maintain their progress.
PROGRAM GOALS: • Reduce body weight by 7% • Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

In order to qualify for the program, you must be at least18 years old, overweight (BMI > 25)* and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes† by a healthcare provider. *Asian individual(s) BMI > 22 †Individuals who have already been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes do not qualify for this program.
