MOVING OUR MISSION

FORWARD

Strategic Plan YMCA of Northwest North Carolina

VISION FOR THE FUTURE As our Y approaches its 125th anniversary and looks to the future, we’ve developed the Strategic Plan you see outlined here to shape the path forward. Since our inception, one thing has remained at the center of all that we do - our mission, “Helping people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body.” Moving Our Mission Forward, YMCA of Northwest North Carolina’s strategic plan, is the result of a tremendous amount of work by volunteers, staff and community leaders over many months. This plan is not one individual’s vision, but rather the representation of our community’s insight into our strategic advantages, the impact the Y has, and how we can continue to strengthen our community by nurturing the potential of children, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. The Y is an organization with not only a long history in the community, but also distinct advantages. Recognized as a leader that has the ability to convene community leadership and grow philanthropic support, we are well-positioned to have an even greater impact in the months and years to come. In determining the priorities and goals of Moving Our Mission Forward, we asked ourselves three big questions: • How do we become proactive in addressing community needs? • How do we position the Y as a cause-driven organization in the community? • How do we insure financial sustainability and the organizational capacity to take on new initiatives? In tackling these questions, we developed sound strategies for reaching even more people and having an even greater impact. We hope you join us in our excitement to begin new initiatives and continue our existing work that has the power to change lives. In Spirit, Mind & Body,

David Fain, Board Chair

Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

REDUCE SUMMER LEARNING LOSS During summer vacation, students lose an average of one month of learning. Lower income students lose even more. By keeping kids engaged in enrichment activities throughout the summer, we can change those odds. At the Y, we will incorporate a reading component into each day of summer camp. For students in need of additional support, we will implement summer education camps at all branches in the Association.

OUR STRATEGY

At the Y, we know that every child has potential and should be given the opportunity and guidance to achieve it. With summer learning loss, academic achievement gaps, and other challenges threatening the future of children, the Y will work to provide the programs, the support and the environment for all kids to reach their full potential.

CLOSE THE EDUCATION ACHIEVEMENT GAP A child’s success in school or if they will graduate high school is too often determined by their gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other factors out of their control. We can help close the education achievement gap by working with local schools to enhance after school curricula to keep kids learning long after the school bell rings.

RECOGNIZED AS THE “GO TO PLACE” FOR THE HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN We believe that confident, healthy kids grow up to be more successful adults. From childcare to swim lessons to youth sports, we help kids understand who they are and what they can achieve. The Y will continue to offer a comprehensive array of programs from birth to 18 years of age to help children feel connected to each other and their community.

Our impact is to strengthen the foundations of our communities and families through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

HEALTHY LIVING

BE A RECOGNIZED CATALYST FOR HEALTHY LIVING Making changes to live healthier can be hard. At the Y, we offer the support, motivation and knowledge for all members of our community to live healthier lives. Offering nutrition classes that promote healthy eating, providing healthy food choices at Y meetings, and encouraging healthy snacks at all Y programs where food is served are ways we will continue to be an essential resource for healthy living.

OUR STRATEGY

Being healthy is about more than just physical activity. A healthy life is achieved by actively striving for spiritual, mental and physical well-being. The Y helps everyone in our community develop the skills and relationships to be healthy, confident and connected to others.

BE A VISIBLE PARTNER IN DELIVERY With nearly half of adults coping with at least one chronic illness, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or arthritis, prevention and wellness programs can change more lives than ever. We will make LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a wellness program for cancer survivors, and the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program available at all branches. We will also establish and grow partnerships with medical practices, hospitals, health departments and universities.

REDUCE YOUTH AND ADULT OBESITY Two in three adults and nearly one in three children are overweight or obese. Obesity is a major health crisis threatening our community and the Y is working to help. We will reach children by introducing “Healthy, Fit and Strong” programs throughout the Association to increase physical activity and educate families about nutrition. We will help adults take control of their health in adult obesity prevention and intervention programs.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

IMPROVE ENGAGEMENT OF DIVERSE POPULATIONS We strengthen our organization when we represent the communities we serve through the diversity and vibrancy of our staff and volunteers. We will evaluate recruitment and hiring processes to ensure all populations are included in our staff and board volunteers.

OUR STRATEGY

At our core as a nonprofit organization, the Y strengthens the foundations of our community. We believe in giving back and providing support to our community because everyone belongs at the Y.

ENHANCE AND EXPAND ADVOCACY EFFORTS

When we all support a common cause, real change is possible. We will rally around advocacy efforts for education, obesity, nutrition, physical activity and the built environment (like sidewalks and greenways).

STRENGTHEN FAMILIES AS A SOURCE AND RESOURCE FOR AFFORDABLE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES The Y provides high quality programs that families can afford. When families are struggling to make ends meet, we offer financial assistance to ensure no one is turned away due to the inability to pay.

SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS We can impact thousands of children and adults across the world by increasing awareness of our Ukrainian partnership throughout the Association.

ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY

DEVELOP AND RETAIN CAUSE-DRIVEN LEADERS / STAKEHOLDERS Provide the resources from technology to training that keeps passionate staff and volunteers engaged in the Y movement.

OUR STRATEGY

We are committed to expanding our capacities to strengthen the foundations of the communities we serve.

OPTIMIZE MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION Leverage data, digital tools, audience segmentation and other tactics to ensure we are reaching key audiences with compelling information.

DEVELOP COMPREHENSIVE FACILITIES AND CAPITAL PLANS Allocate time and funds to ensure our facilities meet the needs of our communities and members.

SHARED SERVICES/MERGERS We will evaluate opportunities both inside and outside of the Y to partner and strengthen our organization’s ability to positively impact lives.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER LIKE ORGANIZATIONS The Y does not exist only within the four walls of our building. Partnerships with organizations that have a similar mission to the Y can better serve our community.

ALIGN CORE COMPETENCIES WITH IDENTIFIED NEEDS We are committed to growth as an organization that will strengthen our community. One way is by expanding our corporate membership and wellness program.

ORGANIZATIONAL FINANCES Without financial strength, our organization cannot grow. Our structure will enable that growth and look to new revenue sources, such as grant-funded programs.
