Our Leaders

Our camps are only as good as the people who staff them. The YMCA of Frederick County prides itself on providing a fine staff of qualified personnel. Many of our staff members are teachers, full time YMCA staff or college students who have been campers themselves. The entire staff participates in an extensive training, which includes certification in CPR and First Aid and Bloodborne exposure training. In addtion, background checks are conducted on all camp staff.

The “Sampler” is a camp that gives kids the opportunity to be introduced to five different languages in one week. Each day will focus on one particular language and provide the theme for songs, crafts and games. Languages will include Spanish, French, American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese and Braille. By the end of the “Sampler” week campers will have significant exposure to different languages from around the world. They will be able to identify basic colors, count to ten, speak greetings and farewells and, in the case of Chinese, write their own names in Chinese characters. The week will be fun and will help parents and children become more informed about future courses of study in languages as campers advance into their middle and high school years. Children will spend half the day in Sampler Language camp and half the day in our Market Street camp.

Who is spying on who? Gather intelligence and be aware of the surroundings you never know where they are. Teamwork is key to spying but who’s on your side? Campers will undergo many different types of agent training to prepare them for their mission at The Spy Museum.

STAFF BABYSITTING

YMCA employees who are responsible for the care and supervision of your children are not allowed to babysit outside the YMCA or transport YMCA participants in their own vehicles. Our goal is to serve as role models and to help each camper gain skills and to enhance his or her self-esteem. The YMCA is committed to recruiting and developing an outstanding group of counselors and directors that are dedicated to providing the best possible day camping experience.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING

Interested in working with children? Become a YMCA Counselor In Training (CIT)! Learn how to design safe, fun and educational activities for children while developing your leadership skills. Due to increased enrollment in the CIT program, we are offering CIT openings to returning participants first. We will offer positions to other interested CITs as space becomes available. If interested in getting your name on the CIT wait list, please email bcoppit@frederickymca.org with your contact information. Returning CITs who wish to apply can download an application from the Forms & Documents section of our website. Applications will be available on on February 18, 2013. Decisions regarding available CIT spaces will be made after April 30, 2013.

CAMP REFUND POLICY

Many of our camps are eligible for a refund, provided you give written notification 2 weeks prior to the start date of the session your child is enrolled in. The following camps are provided through a contracted service and will NOT be eligible for a refund after May 15, 2013: Chinese Language, Dance, Horsemanship, Musical Theater, Outdoorsman, Sampler Language, Sign Language and Young Rembrandts. The refund will be equal to 75% of fees paid, but the fee will not exceed $50 per family at the time of each request.

FOOD, CLOTHING & PERSONAL ITEMS

Some important points: • Campers need to bring their own lunch and beverage to camp every day. • Water will be available at all camps. • Refrigeration is not available. Please, no glass containers; small coolers and ice packs are highly recommended. • Sneakers are also recommended. Send child with swimsuit and towel on swim days. Check with YMCA for a schedule of swim days. Mark first and last names on all belongings. Please do not send valuables along with your child, including video games or game boys. The YMCA is not liable for lost or stolen items. YMCA will keep lost and found items for 3 business days from the end of each week of camp, before disposing of it. Check with your camp director if you have lost something.

SUNSCREEN

Please apply sunscreen to your child daily. We ask that you also send sunscreen with your child each day. Counselors will remind children that they should apply sunscreen periodically throughout the day to avoid sunburn. If needed, we will assist the children in applying the sunscreen.

MOVIE POLICY

Movies that are shown will be a G or PG. Any movie that has excessive violence, excessive language, sexual content, or drug usage will not be watched. PG 13 movies will be shown if all parents, with advance notice, approve of the movie. No movie rated R or above will be watched at any time.

WATER

We encourage all campers to come with water in water bottles to drink at camps. We do provide water at all outdoor camps and encourage children to drink water during hot days. We also provide cups if you do not have a water bottle.

HOT & INCLEMENT WEATHER

In the event of unseasonably hot weather, our camps may modify the schedule. Typically, outdoor camps will spend part of the morning outside, before spending time inside in the afternoon. In camps where indoor access is not available, the activities are modified and children are provided activities better suited to hot weather.

MEDICATIONS/ACCOMODATIONS

In the event of inclement weather, i.e. thunder and lightning, the children are brought inside and provided alternate activities. In camps, where being indoors may not be possible, they are brought to a safe location, under cover. Most camps continue with their normal day in the event of rain, with activities slightly modified.

Any medication dispensed at camp needs a written prescription from the doctor to the YMCA to administer.

YMCA CAMP STAFF DIRECTORY

Please note any special medication needs on your child’s health form, and make sure medication is given to your child’s Camp Director with complete instructions for its administration. Instructions need to be written on the medication bottle and sent along with a list of possible side effects. This information can be obtained from your doctor or pharmacist.

Please be sure to talk to the YMCA Camp staff if you have any special concerns/accommodations for your child. The YMCA staff are trained in dealing with wide ranging medical needs and other accommodations, but need advance knowledge of these issues either on the health form or via phone or email before the first day of camp. Failure to fully disclose all issues may result in your child not being able to fully participate and enjoy the experience of camp.
