PRESCHOOL

Preschool 2017-18 DCFS Licensed Programs At the Sage YMCA, we regard each child as a unique individual, to be understood, guided, encouraged and valued. Our programs provide children the abilities to learn through play, and confidently explore and build a positive self-image. Our teachers are professionally trained and DCFS-certified, with continual professional development to ensure the best and most current practice in the classroom. We are proud to implement The Creative Curriculum, which is fully aligned with state and national Early Learning Standards. The curriculum focuses on the interests of the children, which creates the study topics of our lessons. The Creative Curriculum develops social, emotional and physical development, language, literacy, math and cognitive skills. The curriculum also includes science, social studies and the arts to develop the whole child based on their individual developmental needs. Our all day and half day program options give children an opportunity to fully engage and explore in a child centered environment that supports the unique needs of each child.

EARLY LEARNING ENRICHMENT CLASSES Tiny Tots with Parent (6-12 months) Our Tiny Tot class is a fun way to introduce babies and parents to other members while promoting auditory development through music and stories, exploring their senses with tummy time and supporting visual learning with flashlight play and more. Join this bonding time with your baby and have fun making memories at the Y. Tots with Parent (1-2 years) Our Parent-Tot classes promote early development and provide a strong foundation for a child’s critical first years. Weekly classes help your child achieve new milestones and prepare them for more advanced challenges during each stage of growth. As a participating parent you will be right there to celebrate every discovery with smiles, hugs and giggles. Super Tots - Parent Optional (2-3 years) Our Super Tot classes promote Early Learning development and independence. We believe in creating an environment that will inspire each child to reach his or her fullest potential in the areas of social, emotional, physical and academic development. Parent attendance is optional, but all parents must stay in the Sage Y during class time.

STEM FOR PRESCHOOLERS

One of the newer educational terms that we see frequently in the news is STEM education. But what exactly is STEM education and is it appropriate for preschoolers? STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math. Preschoolers spontaneously engage in STEM activities indoors and outdoors. This program will enhance children’s opportunities to engage in STEM learning and develop their critical thinking skills. CLASS

NEW SWIM LESSON PROGRAMS

12 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

CHGO016

This winter, we’re launching a brand-new swim lesson program. This new child-centered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range: • Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years) • Preschool (3-5 years) • School Age (5-12 years) Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace.

B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help • To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS

• To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues

(Ages 6 Months To 3 Years)

• To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children

Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water: • To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs • To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents

• To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship Register for Early Learning Enrichment AND Parent/Child Swim Lessons, and you'll receive 10% off the session rate for Early Learning Enrichment classes. (Ages 3-5 Years) Designed to meet the needs of preschoolers, these stages build upon a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention by teaching water adjustment and swim-readiness skills through fun and creative activities. Levels in this phase include: Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help • To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the class are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through water • To develop basic water safety skills in the form of jump, push, turn and grab, and swim-float-swim Level 3: Water Stamina In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances and are introduced to rotary breathing, integrated rotary breathing and integrated arm and leg action. In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop rotary movement with breathing in the form of side glide recovery position • To encourage forward movement on the front and back • To practice safety techniques in deep water

14 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes • To practice safety techniques in deep water

(Ages 6-12 Years) For kids in elementary and primary school, a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention is made by teaching water adjustment and skill readiness for children from six to twelve years of age.

Level 6: Stroke Mechanics In this class, students refine their stroke technique on all of the major competitive strokes and learn about competitive swimming. The goals of the program include: • To develop endurance in the competitive strokes • To develop skills related to competitive swimming like racing starts and flip turns • To enhance skills and build endurance in deep water
