CHGO13

This winter we’re launching a brand-new swim lesson program! This new child-centered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

NEW THIS WINTER: When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range.

• To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

• Parent/Child (6 months to 18 months or 19 months to 36 months) • Preschool (3-5 years) • School Age (6-12 years)

• To provide parents and children the opportunity to share common experiences, socialize, and interact with one another

On the first day of class our instructors will determine which skill level your child belongs in. From there they’ll progress through the levels at their own pace. All classes will close for registration after the first lesson. Registrations will be accepted after the first lesson, but will be put on a waitlist to ensure proper placement by the aquatics department based on the child’s level and class space. Make-Ups We understand that there are times when families may need to miss a lesson. Due to the child-centered nature of our new program, make-ups may be unavailable and cannot be guaranteed. Please email your center’s Aquatic Department for consideration. Cancellations and Refunds If you are unable to attend a session of classes that you have registered for, kindly give us a one-week notice before the session begins so that we can fill the spot or make a determination if the class has met minimum enrollment. If we are able to cancel, we will issue you a credit voucher in the amount that you paid for the class. Department Contacts: Fry (fryaquatics@ymcachicago.org) | Kroehler (tgray@ymcachicago.org)

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6-36 MO.)

Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water: • To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs

CHGO13

• To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents

B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help • To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance • To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues • To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children • To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

(AGES 3-5)

Designed to meet the needs of preschoolers, these stages build upon a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention by teaching water adjustment and swim-readiness skills through fun and creative activities. Levels in this phase include: Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help • To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the class are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through water • To develop basic water safety skills in the form of jump, push, turn and grab, and swim-float-swim Level 3: Water Stamina In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances and are introduced to rotary breathing, integrated rotary breathing and integrated arm and leg action. In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop rotary movement with breathing in the form of side glide recovery position • To encourage forward movement on the front and back • To practice safety techniques in deep water Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes • To practice safety techniques in deep water 10 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs

The benefits of a private swim lesson are that they are scheduled around your schedule, and you can focus your lesson on what you want to learn: to dive, to swim, to complete a triathlon! To request a private lesson, please complete the online request form available on our websites. Private Swim Lessons are available for participants ages 3 and up. These 30-minute, 1-on-1 lessons are offered in packages of 3, 5, 7, or 9 lessons. Semi-Private Lessons are available for participants ages 3 and up. These 30-minute, 2-on-1 lessons are offered in packages of 3, 5, 7, or 9 lessons. Both participants must be at similar age and ability levels. Note: Both participants must be members to receive the member rate.

ADAPTIVE PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS (AGES 3+)

These are 30-minute lessons available to participants with special needs. Skills will be comparable to those taught in the YMCA preschool and youth swim programs and modified to fit each participant’s individual needs and goals. Professional directors will work with families to determine if this option is the best fit for each participant. To request lessons at the Fry Family YMCA: email FryAquatics@ymcachicago.org

Porpoise Swim Conference Summer Swim Team (Ages 5-18)

PRESCHOOL (AGES 2-6) Preschool is an exciting time as children embark on new adventures in the world of learning. At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programs provide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Y programs encourage children to explore their creativity through multi-sensory experiences and create a language-rich environment to promote and foster a love of reading. Children are exposed to art, music, math and science as they develop expressive and receptive language and gross motor skills.

Let’s Explore (Ages 2-3)

This class offers opportunities for social engagement, time to encourage curiosity and assistance in developing fine and large motor skills in a fun, caring preschool environment. Emphasis is placed on the child’s method of discovery, not on the end result. • Child must be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2019 • Daily gym or outdoor time • Potty training is not required. Parent must be available to return to change soiled diapers should the need arise. • Fry preschool program includes a catered snack

Fab 4s (Ages 3-4) Children are exposed to hands-on learning, ageappropriate literacy and daily circle activities. Children will engage in explorative, child-led learning that will develop fine and large motor skills as well as social and emotional skills. • Children must be entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2018

PILATES REFORMER Using a sophisticated system of springs, straps and pulleys, a reformer allows instructors to utilize over 100 unique exercises to deliver amazing results! The reformer uses a moving platform on which one can sit, kneel, stand or lie on their front, back or side. The user pushes and pulls off a stationary bar using his or her arms, legs, wrists and ankles to slide back and forth along rails. This is done in a controlled manner, using tension springs to work specific muscles.

The Fry Family YMCA only uses state-of-the-art Pilates Reformer machines with certified instructors who have extensive training. Wondering if Pilates Reformer is right for you? Email reformers@ ymcachicago.org or call 630.579.5710 to request a free trial.

WATER FITNESS See current Group Fitness Schedules in the center, on our website and mobile app for days and times for classes.

This highly effective, no impact exercise method focuses on "core" muscles that will help you burn calories and define your muscles. Pilates will shape and lengthen the entire body, while strengthening the lower back and joints.
