EARLY LEARNING & CHILD CARE ENRICHMENT CLASSES The first years of a child's life are an exciting time to embark on new adventures in the world of learning. At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programs provide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Y programs encourage children to explore their creativity through multisensory experiences and create a language-rich environment to promote and foster a love of reading. Children are exposed to art, music, math and science as they develop expressive and receptive language and gross motor skills. Creative Creations (4-5) This is a creative class where your preschooler will paint, sculpt, sing and play, all while letting their creativity shine! Discovering Fun (2-3) An introduction to preschool where your toddler will develop their social skills through singing, stories, playtime, art exploration and more! Mad Scientists (4-5) As a preschool enrichment class, students will become “mad scientists and perform different experiments in this fun and interactive, creative classroom. Let your child explore the world of science!

SWIM LESSONS

View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

CHGO011

Last fall, we launched a brand-new swim lesson program. This new childcentered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range, day and time: Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years) Preschool (3-5 years) School Age (5-12 years) Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace. See chart at the bottom of this page.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (Ages 6 Months To 3 Years) Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water: • To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs • To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship • To provide parents and children the opportunity to share common experiences, socialize, and interact with one another B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are:

CHGO011

• To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help • To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance

• To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues • To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children • To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS (Ages 5-12 Years) For kids in elementary and primary school, a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention is made by teaching water adjustment and skill readiness for children from six to twelve years of age. Levels in this phase include: Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help • To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through the water

PERSONAL TRAINING

SMART START

Achieve and exceed your health and fitness goals with the support and guidance of one of our nationally certified personal trainers. Our trainers will create a safe and effective exercise program that’s customized for your personal health and fitness goals. At the YMCA, we believe being healthy and fit is a lifestyle and a journey, and we're here to help you every step of the way. Whether your goal is to lose weight, build core strength, run a marathon or simply live healthier, our trainers will help you get there.

Starting to exercise for the first time — or picking it back up after a break — can be a real challenge. It’s easy to get overwhelmed during your first week as your body adjusts to new activity. Luckily, the Leaning Tower YMCA now offers SMART START, a free, personalized fitness plan to help ease yourself into shape instead of overloading your body on day one and getting burned out.

To learn more about our personal training options, schedule a Y Wellness Consultation at the Member Services Desk, or by contacting Karen Prorok, Fitness Manager, at kprorok@ ymcachicago.org or 847.410.5138.

Y MAX TRAINING SYSTEM® This unique personal training methodology was designed with results in mind. The Y Max Training System® goes beyond personal training. It is a complete exercise and nutrition system customized to your goals, nutritional habits, health and fitness experience and predispositions. Key Features: • Daily exercise plan for workouts without your trainer • Nutritional assignments specific to your eating habits and preferences • Progress monitoring and accountability • Monthly weight goals • Functional components to improve lower back and joint strength • Very high rate of success, especially with individuals whose main goal is weight loss. To learn more about the Y Max Training System, schedule a free Y Wellness Consultation at the Member Services Desk, or by contacting Karen Prorok, Fitness Manager, at kprorok@ ymcachicago.org or 847.410.5138.

We’ll help you create a customized, incremental fitness plan that starts slow and easy, then builds steadily over the course of a few weeks. Evidence-based Fitness: Research shows that the key to long-term success with exercise is to start slow. In fact, a study conducted by Pennsylvania State University introduced 25 inactive adults to group fitness slowly, allowing them to “dip their toes” into exercise. The result? 80% of the group never missed a workout in the following 30 weeks. They lost body fat, gained lean muscle and prevented the chances of developing cardiovascular disease. That incremental approach to getting in shape is at the heart of SMART START, where the Y helps you choose from our group exercise classes to create a unique plan that’s right for you. Sign up for a free Y Wellness Consultation to get started.
