EARLY LEARNING & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

EARLY LEARNING PROGRAMS At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programs provide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Y programs encourage children to explore their creativity through multi-sensory experiences and create a language-rich environment to promote and foster a love of reading. Children are exposed to art, music, math and science as they develop expressive and receptive language and gross motor skills. Hero Academy Through stories, songs, art projects, games and on-site visitors, your child will learn how to harness the abilities of heroes and heroines. Children will receive training while building character as we explore real and fictional heroes. Each week, the participants will master a new skill. The class is held in our Youth Development Center. Your child must be potty-trained to enroll. Join the next generation of heroes. Kindergarten Club Need a fun and engaging space for your part day Kindergartner? We are offering enrichment activities for them at the Y. There will be field games, science experiments, art and STEM activities to enhance their learning. Rock Climbing, swimming and gym time will be offered. Help your children ease their transition from a half-day of school to a full day of fun! Inquire for transportation. Little Learners A preschool program that works on ageappropriate areas of learning through play, sensory, block, math, literacy, dramatic play, art and other activities. NEW SWIM LESSON PROGRAMS

08 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs

View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

CHGO010

This winter, we’re launching a brand-new swim lesson program. This new childcentered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range: • Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years) • Preschool (3-5 years) • School Age (6-12 years) Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace.

• To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help • To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS

• To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues

(AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS)

• To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children

Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water:

CHGO010

B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are:

• To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (AGES 3-5 YEARS) Designed to meet the needs of preschoolers, these stages build upon a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention by teaching water adjustment and swim-readiness skills through fun and creative activities. Levels in this phase include: Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help • To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the class are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through water • To develop basic water safety skills in the form of jump, push, turn and grab, and swim-float-swim

Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes • To practice safety techniques in deep water
