Preschool is an exciting time as children embark on new adventures in the world of learning. At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programs provide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Y programs encourage children to explore their creativity through multi-sensory experiences and create a language-rich environment to promote and foster a love of reading. Children are exposed to art, music, math and science as they develop expressive and receptive language and gross motor skills.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

SCHOOL DAYS OUT

Developing character and friendships in a safe and nurturing environment.

Looking for a child care option when your kids are out of school due to a school holiday, weather closing or winter or spring break? Our School Day Out options are designed to engage children in healthy physical activity and foster positive social interactions. Our programs offer the highest-quality instruction and supervision, provided by trained and qualified staff members.

The YMCA’s before and after school programs are more than just a child care program. They are an enrichment program designed to meet the developmental needs of children with an emphasis on experiential learning, social and emotional development and the promotion of healthy living all while providing a fun, safe and nurturing environment for children. In our program, parents have the peace of mind knowing that their child is in a supportive environment focused on developing their child’s true potential. The Irving Park YMCA provides before school programming for Portage Park, Belding, Disney II elementary, and Gray School. The cost per month is $130 for members and $160 for non-members. SWIM LESSONS This winter, we’re launching a brand-new swim lesson program. This new child-centered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

• Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years) • Preschool (3-5 years) • School Age (5-12 years) Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS)

Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water: • To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs • To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship • To provide parents and children the opportunity to share common experiences, socialize, and interact with one another 08 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs

View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help • To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance • To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues • To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children • To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

YOUTH SPORTS LEAGUES Basketball Did you know that the YMCA invented basketball? We continue to be committed to teaching your child the fundamentals of basketball, while competing in a fun and friendly environment! The Y Youth Basketball League is the perfect fit for you and your family. Our leagues are focused on developing your child's skills and overall enjoyment for the sport of basketball. Teams will have experienced and trained coaches for all age levels. All teams will have one practice a week and one game a week with a playoff tournament at the end of the year (8 games, plus playoffs). Grades 2 & 3 are coed, with Grades 4-12 having separate leagues for boys and girls. Volleyball Bump into the game! Join the Irving Park YMCA Youth Volleyball League where participants will have the opportunity to explore interests through recreational and competitive play. Youth and teens will concentrate on developing fundamentals and passion. Futsal (Indoor Soccer) This is a free flowing game that allows players to experiment, execute and learn various soccer skills that are realistic to the game. Building off of our player development curriculum, futsal will also develop higher levels of athleticism, awareness, problem solving, enjoyment, and competition. The real beauty of this game is that players learn and discover how to play soccer by actually playing soccer, using trial and error, and having a good time doing it.
