EARLY LEARNING & CHILD CARE

NEW Beginning in January 2017

All-Day Preschool  Beginning in January 2017, we will offer extended care for those families who may need care at the beginning and/or end of the day. Our before care will run from 7 to 9 a.m., preschool will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and aftercare from 3 to 6 p.m. Morning snack, catered in lunch and afternoon snack are included.
Our preschool program offers children the abilities to learn through play and to confidently explore and build positive self-esteem. Children's readiness for formal schooling is most effectively promoted by play experiences in which they feel the freedom to try out new ideas, practical skills and imitate adult roles. Children are encouraged to build social skills that help build upon negotiation skills, conflict resolution skills and building friendships. Our teachers are professionally trained and DCFS-certified, with continual professional development to ensure the best and most current practices in the classroom.

Our preschool curriculum promotes individual children’s growth through learning, exploration and creativity. We are proud to begin implementing the Creative Curriculum, which is fully aligned with state and national early learning standards. The curriculum focuses on the interests of children, which creates the study topics of our lessons. Creative Curriculum promotes social, emotional and physical development, language, literacy, math and cognitive skills. The curriculum also includes science, social studies and the arts to develop the whole child based on their individual developmental needs. Cooking, science experiments, water recreation in the pool, exploratory art, gym time and learning with technology are some of the activities that are part of our curriculum. Beginning January 2017, we will be moving to a mixed-age classroom model. Children who are 3-5 years of age will be placed in the same classroom. Mixed-age groups provide children with opportunities to interact with children younger and older than them. This allows children to learn how to be nurturing, as well as leadership, social and cognitive skills. Please contact Amy Hirsh at ahirsh@ymcachicago.org  or 847.410.5373 for more information about our preschool programs! CHGO03

EARLY LEARNING PRESCHOOL

Kindergarten Enrichment We offer AM and PM Kindergarten enrichment programs. Our programs are DCFS-licensed. Kindergarten Enrichment provides a broad range of curriculum and activities based on the YMCA’s principles of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility while encouraging children to achieve a healthy spirit, mind and body. Our AM Enrichment Program runs from 8-11:30 a.m. and PM runs from 11:30 a.m.- 3 p.m. Children continuing their day with the After School Program may remain at the YMCA.

NEW! Before Care will be offered for students attending our AM Enrichment Program. It will be held at the Y and run from 6:458 am. If your child is attending our PM Enrichment Program and attending AM Kindergarten at school, Before Care will be offered for them at either Isaac Fox or May Whitney. Before Care will be held at Isaac Fox for Isaac Fox students only and at May Whitney for all other students. Students who attend Before Care at May Whitney that do not attend May Whitney will be bussed to their respective schools by District 95 buses. Before Care is held from 6:45- 8:15 a.m. A $50 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of registration for members, and a $100 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of registration for non-members.

EARLY LEARNING ENRICHMENT The early years of a child's life are an exciting time to embark on new adventures in the world of learning. At the Y, we regard each child as a unique individual who needs to be understood, guided, encouraged and appreciated. Our programs provide activities where children learn, explore, build a positive self-image and develop strong social and emotional relationships. Y programs encourage children to explore their creativity through multisensory experiences and create a language-rich environment to promote and foster a love of reading. Children are exposed to art, music, math and science as they develop expressive and receptive language and gross motor skills.

No Cooking Required - NEW TIME!

CHGO03

Put on your apron and step into the kitchen. Together we will make fun and healthy snacks that we can eat. Cooking is a fun, engaging activity for children, but one that has been used for years as an important teaching and development tool for all ages. Children will follow a step-by-step process that allows them to successfully complete their delicious snack by themselves.

Calling All Picassos NEW CLASS & TIME!

Process Art is a wonderful way for preschoolers to express themselves. In these sessions, Children will be offered a variety of Art techniques. In the winter session children will be exposed to different types of media and will get hands on experience using these materials. In Spring Session I, Children will be exposed to Abstract art and will create their own pieces based on their own interpretation of abstract art. Spring II session children will have the opportunity to create their own 3D art.

Preschooler’s Tech Beginnings - NEW CLASS!

You cannot go anywhere without seeing and using technology. This must be why children are so intrigued by it. Technology is defined as tools that will make work easier and solve problems. During the duration of these sessions, children will be able to use their processing skills to experiment to figure out what to do next, how to solve problems of design and to communicate and represent their learning. To begin with in the winter session children will be introduced to the concept of technology tools that preschoolers use on a daily basis as well as explore digital tools. During Spring I session we will dig deeper by introducing children to coding. Through learning to code children will assimilate creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Coding teaches children powerful ideas that have relevance and value outside of a specific task. Finally in Spring II children will delve into the engineering side and see how things are created. They will then have the opportunity to use this information to design their own inventions.

Science Exploration

Preschoolers are natural scientists as their curiosity and need to make the world more predictable drive them to explore and draw conclusions from their experiences. This session will allow children to use this natural gift to wonder, discover and explore. Children will be introduced to different scientific methods in a fun play based atmosphere. They will have the opportunity to hypothesis test and analyze as they utilize a variety of materials to explore in an assortment of science experiments.

Preview to Preschool

Come to our preschool room and be introduced to a wonderful world of preschool activities. In this class we like to focus on small group lessons, one-on-one instruction and learning through creative activities such as art, dance and music.

SWIM LESSONS & SWIM TEAMS

12 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs

View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

CHGO03

This past summer, we launched a brand-new swim lesson program. This new child-centered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range: • Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years) • Preschool (3-5 years) • School Age (5-12 years) Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS) Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water: • To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs • To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship • To provide parents and children the opportunity to share common experiences, socialize, and interact with one another

B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help • To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance • To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues • To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children • To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (AGES 3-5 YEARS) Designed to meet the needs of preschoolers, these stages build upon a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention by teaching water adjustment and swim-readiness skills through fun and creative activities. Levels in this phase include: Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help • To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices

Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the class are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through water • To develop basic water safety skills in the form of jump, push, turn and grab, and swim-float-swim Level 3: Water Stamina In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances and are introduced to rotary breathing, integrated rotary breathing and integrated arm and leg action. In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop rotary movement with breathing in the form of side glide recovery position • To encourage forward movement on the front and back • To practice safety techniques in deep water Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes

SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6-12 YEARS) For kids in elementary and primary school, a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention is made by teaching water adjustment and skill readiness for children from six to twelve years of age. Levels in this phase include:

Level 3: Water Stamina In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances and are introduced to rotary breathing, integrated rotary breathing and integrated arm and leg action. In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop rotary movement with breathing in the form of side glide recovery position

Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are:

• To encourage forward movement on the front and back

• To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help

• To practice safety techniques in deep water

• To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through the water • To develop basic water safety skills in the form of jump, push, turn and grab, and swim-float-swim

• To practice safety techniques in deep water Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include: • To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes Level 5: Stroke Development In this class, students continue to work on their stroke technique and all major competitive strokes are introduced. The goals of the program include: • To develop stamina in the front crawl and back crawl strokes • To develop the breaststroke and butterfly strokes • To build endurance techniques for deep-water safety Level 6: Stroke Mechanics In this class, students refine their stroke technique on all of the major competitive strokes and learn about competitive swimming. The goals of the program include: • To develop endurance in the competitive strokes • To develop skills related to competitive swimming like racing starts and flip turns

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming active and developing healthy habits they will continue throughout their lives. In a Y sports program, your child will meet friends, learn new skills, improve his or her fitness and most importantly have fun! Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes with learning a new sport, building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, or refining and improving skills, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole athlete, inside and out.

In our leagues, athletes play equal time, with positive competition and family involvement. In addition to developing your child’s athletic ability and sportsmanship, our programs emphasize the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Come watch your child’s skills and character develop in one of our youth sports leagues featured below.

Basketball Level 3 Want to enhance your basketball skills? Then take this class where boys and girls will start learning the basics of basketball, and then progressively move up to the different levels as you accomplish different skills throughout the levels. Participants will learn how to dribble, pass and shoot in a fun atmosphere. The focus of this is to learn the game of basketball, meet new friends and have fun! The instructor will determine whether the participant is ready for the next level or league. Volleyball Come bump, set and spike with our Foglia YMCA volleyball class! We will teach the fundamentals and progress through different drills like serving, setting, passing and hitting. We will start with a lower net if needed to learn the basics, and then adjust as needed throughout the session.
