EARLY LEARNING & CHILD CARE

Sparking a child’s love of learning and exploration. Buehler YMCA offers play-based preschool programs that encourage children to explore their environment as they develop creativity, problem-solving and skills related to cognitive, physical and social/emotional growth. Students are introduced to literacy, math, science and social studies concepts through hands-on activities. Trained early childhood educators undergo continual professional development to ensure best practices are being used in the classroom. Teachers utilize the Creative Curriculum based on the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Our preschool programs are also licensed by DCFS. In addition to preschool half-day class, students who are 3 years old have the opportunity to participate in once-weekly, 45-minute swim lessons taught by instructors in our Aquatics Department, or gymnastics/sports classes. Preschool staff will transfer students to this coordinating program. Our half-day programs start the third week in August and run through the end of May. We offer a summer preschool program in the months of June, July and August. Our full-day preschool program runs 12 months.

Our YMCA programs teach teens how to express themselves, come together for a common cause, while being active and informed citizens. Leaders Club involves teens in community service projects, team building activities and cooperative learning groups while promoting positive self-image and a variety of leadership strengths. Busing from all District 15 junior high schools is available. For more information and to register, please contact our Youth Development Director Annie Yung at 847.410.5233 or ayung@ymcachicago.org.

NEW SWIM LESSON PROGRAMS

12 | 2017 Winter/Spring Programs

View and register for our programs at register.ymcachicago.org.

CHGO01

This winter, we’re launching a brand-new swim lesson program. This new child-centered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process. Due to the new Y lesson format, there will be no make up lessons.

When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range: • Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years) • Preschool (3-5 years) • School Age (5-12 years) Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS (AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS) Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include: A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water: • To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs • To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents • To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

(AGES 3-5 YEARS) Designed to meet the needs of preschoolers, these stages build upon a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention by teaching water adjustment and swim-readiness skills through fun and creative activities. Levels in this phase include: Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are: • To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help • To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the class are: • To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through water

YOUTH DANCE CLASSES Dance Ballet Ballet is the foundation for jazz, modern and lyrical dance. This class is open to girls and boys ages 6-12 and will help students develop poise, posture, strength, flexibility and expressivity. Contrary to common thought, ballet is not always a “slow-paced class.” This ballet class utilizes a variety of musical tempos for beautiful turns, jumps and balances. Girls should wear a leotard, tights and ballet shoes. Boys should wear form-fitting athletic clothes and ballet shoes.
