This summer, we’ve added programs for a brand new age frame, tweens. Tweens entering grades 6-8, are invited to attend programs designed specifically for them.

Hey, if you are entering grades 7-12, then this summer the place to be is the Library. We have events and activities planned that will take you around the world.

CHILDREN’S Join the Summer Reading Club for kids of all ages through 8th grade. Registration begins June 18 but children may join anytime after that date. This summer, play the reading game and win prizes!

Every Picture Has a Story Photo Contest A photo contest for kids, ages 4-13 It’s time for kids to get out their cameras (or borrow their parents’) and take pictures of the world around them because every picture has a story. Pick up an entry form at the Children’s Desk for more details. The fun begins June 18.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament Saturday, June 25 • 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. Lunch, including pizza, chips, and a drink will be sold for $5. Proceeds from the sale will benefit The Friends of the Yorba Linda Public Library.

Tween Mystery Night Monday, June 27 • 6:30 p.m. Students entering 6th-8th grade, become a detective and help us investigate suspects, hunt for clues and solve the mystery of “Who’s A Fraidy Kat?”

Tween Verbal Defense Program Mondays, July 25, August 1 and 8 • 6:00-7:00 p.m. Tweens entering grades 6-8 are invited to take part in a series of Verbal Defense Programs, instructed by The World Martial Arts Center. Students will learn anti-bullying techniques that will help them take emotional control of confrontational situations.

YOU ARE HERE: UNITED STATES June 28 • 5:00-8:00 p.m. Celebrate the United States by taking part in a 4th of July Holiday Card making event. Cards will be delivered to a local VA Hospital. Students may earn school community service hours for participating. Students must bring their own school community service form. All card making materials will be provided.

YOU ARE HERE: ITALY July 5 • 5:00-8:00 p.m. Enjoy Italian food, create a mosaic craft, and watch a showing of Letters to Juliet!

Target: Osama Friday, June 10 • 6:30 p.m. Shortly after 9/11, the United States realized that Osama bin Laden, leader of Al-Queda, was responsible for the attacks. By December 2001, he was known to be hiding in the mountains at Tora Bora in Afghanistan and Gary Berntsen of the CIA went to capture him. Ralph Pezzullo, who co-wrote the story of that battle with Berntsen, will tell you the story behind Osama’s escape into Pakistan, where he was found in April of this year.

Wonders of Korea: Exploring Korean Culture Friday, August 5, 2011 • 6:30-8:30 p.m. Travel to the unique and wonderful world of Korea.

Enjoy an authentic Korean meal while you witness a re-enactment of a traditional Korean wedding. View hidden treasures of Korean art and architecture, both past and present. Scrapbooking Your Novel Destination Saturday, August 6 • 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Join Andrea Lewis as she helps you learn to preserve your summer memories! This presentation will give you ideas of what to think about while on your trip, tips for the kinds of photos you should take while traveling, and what kind of memorabilia to bring home. Also discussed will be digital software, “hybrid scrapbooking” and different approaches to scrapbooking. Light refreshments will be served. This is a lecture, no materials needed.
