Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

Two-dimensioned fabrication where the cutting head moves on two axis, over a sheet of the material which will be cut by using one of the following techniques. plasma-arch, laser beam or water jet. Subtractive fabrication where a solid is cut to attain desired form. The cutting haed moves in the three-dimensions, x, y and z. There are also four or five-axis machines that allow for more complex cuts like undercuts. Additive fabrication, the opposite of subtractive. The principle is that the solid object is sliced into two-dimensioned layers which can then be layered to manufactured the object. Using parametric modelling, architectes can quickly and easily create many iterations of their designs digitally and directly use this to create physical model using CNC technology. The final manufacturing of the design can also be done directly from the design model using CNC fabrication.

Week Three

Surface Creation

Grasshopper is a tough plug-in to learn how to manipulate model instead of directly in rhino. Grasshopper is more convenient, because it can just slide the number slides to change the surface’s appearance, till you found a surface you like.

Week Four Panels & Waffle

Both panels are hollow-out, one is triangular pyramid, another is cube.

Positions of two surfaces form a pyramid shaped structure waffle. Very broad space at the bottom, then becomes narrower on the higher layers. It looks like a tent.

Hollowed design can let light irradiate through the small wholes. Shadow will be surrounded.

Week Four

Laser Cutting

It is important to remember to mirror first after the unrolling surface. In order to let the laser cut machine recognise which line should be cut and which shoud be etched, it is crucial to put them into different layers.

Isometric

Insert a brief description of your isometric here. Comment on the process of choosing which iteration to develop and 3D Print. The final boolean model, I cut the top part from the previous boolean model that already printed in 3D (the task 2 photo), because the top part is redundant and height of this pavilion is too high. On the ground, wall embraced the circle centre part for people gathering or for exhibition or gallery purpose. People can walk through the rectangle door to the back of the pavilion instead of walk around. There are hollows, so the wind can blow the air cycle

Week Six Task 01

Task 01 Matrix I used two surfaces in first images. When I set them in grasshopper for the waffle structure, rhino showed a pyramid shaped structure. I thought that could be very interesting if I develop panels on these two surfaces.

These four images illustrate how the model works with sunlight in different month but same time in 2018. It has many shadow spaces, it provides cool space for people to have a rest in hot summer day.
