TARR BÉLA FILM FESTIVAL

Tarr Béla is considered one of the most important film directors in Hungary. In Tarr Béla’s movies, this world is messy, disorderly and unpredictable. But one thing is invisible, slowly flowing into our lives, our hearts, supporting us. That is hope. All grievances in life transform into courage, comforted by this glimmer of hope, giving us the strength to move forward.


SELECTED WORKS OF YI SHI | BREATHE

Objective

Select a director and create a film festival organized around their body of work. The festival identity should be based on a dominant theme in the films, and the visual system must be applied consistently across a range of film festival deliverables including posters, catalog and packaging.

Solution

The concept is “The Wildness”, not only because the places where Tarr’s stories happen are always small towns with simple life styles, but also because of his analysis of the wild, dark side of human nature. The design started from the poster. I chose four elements from the films to design these posters—dirt, water (rain), dry branches and wind.

LUNCH SPECIAL VISUAL SYSTEM

Java Lava is a lovely coffee shop in San Francisco offering a lunch special. A cup of coffee is always a good beginning of a day, and a delicious lunch can give you more energy. Java Lava displays a large handwritten, homemade sign on the sidewalk in front of the shop in order to attract more customers.

Objective

Redesign a sign you see on the street that you think can become a better design, then expand the design into several deliverables maintaining the message of the sign.

Solution

The sign I chose was a lunch special sign from a coffee shop named Java Lava. The original sign is a handwritten sign in a couple of colors with different sizes of text. In order to broadcast the idea, I also designed a poster, a brochure, a card, a coupon and a to-go order phone app for the customers who want to enjoy the locale. The design is in a countryside style with rough wood background and photos of delicious food.

China is one of the oldest countries in the world, and it has rich cultural relics. Many of these can be seen in the United States. Scholars, art collectors and people interested in Chinese culture can see different artifacts in museums throughout the United States.

Objective

Think about the problems in daily life, and choose one as the design topic. Try to solve the problem with design.

Solution

As an art student, going to museums and being inspired by those gorgeous artifacts from the ancient world is one of the most regular things I do. Different cultures have different special characteristics, as does Chinese culture. The good thing is, there are great numbers of Chinese artifacts taken care of and shown in museums in the United States. It is a good opportunity for people who are interested in Chinese culture. However, the artifacts are separated in different museums, so I started this project to attract more people to museums for Chinese artifacts and also provide them the best routes to visit these museums based on their needs.

Time is the witness to our lives. Time can grow, time can destroy, time can hurt, time can heal, time brings love, time brings hate. Time is something we can’t see or even touch, but it impacts our life in many, many ways.

Objective

Each student in the class writes down a topic they like, and all the topics are mixed together. Then each student accepts the challenge and picks the topic from the box randomly as the concept for their book.

Solution

Future of Future is the topic I chose. It is a really interesting topic and I feel lucky that I had it. Time is an abstract idea. We all know it is there and it affects us on every level, but we can’t see it and we can barely tell exactly what it is. So in this book I mention some interesting truths and stories about life. Because after all, time to us is a feeling, but not a thing we can see and touch.

Leiner Health Products was once the world’s largest manufacturer of vitamin supplements, but suffered a decline and eventually filed for bankruptcy. At one time the company produced over 25 billion tablets annually, producing their own brand, as well as manufacturing private label brands for mass retailers, drugstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs.

Objective

Choose a defunct or dying brand, make a plan for a new business direction for the brand based on research and redesign the visual system to express the soul of the brand to build a future.

Solution

The new Leiner Health Products will focus on the health of young urban adults by providing them health products. Recreate a new brand system that is more lively and bright in order to attract a younger audience. The logo is a combination of a shield, the sun and a road, which mean hope, light and the process to a better future. Besides the visual identity, I also created a health machine App, packaging and a flyer to introduce healthy habits for young people to improve their physical health.

Borders Group was an international retailer of books and music, but faced with the decline in print book sales, the company was forced to close its stores. Before 2010, Borders had 19,500 employees and 511 superstores throughout the US selling books, music and movies.

Objective

Choose a defunct or dying brand, make a plan for a new business direction for the brand based on research and redesign the visual system to express the soul of the brand to build a future.

Solution

As technology develops, more and more people are starting to use digital books instead of buying paper books. As one of the biggest paper book stores, Borders Group needs a new direction in order to capture the future market. Borders Group started from a small book store, and as it developed, it also integrated music and movies into a lot of its stores. In early 2004, Borders ran Seattle’s Best cafe operations in its stores. Borders is bookstore based, but through the different elements, the new Borders Group will improve communication among people and help people to achieve better lives.

Tracking calories is one of the things we can do to stay healthy. A calorie counter can record how many calories we get from our meals and how many calories we burn after exercising every day. It can show us the results of our exercise every day and also make it easier for us to track our physical situation.

The app I decided to make is a calorie counter. As a student with a lot of homework, I barely have time to work out. In order to stay healthy, I came up with this “health reminder� idea and hope it can help me and keep me healthy without spending too much time.

A lot of amazing monuments are shown in museums around the world without protection. People go to visit them every day from all over the world to see these brilliant achievements. For some reason, some artifacts have no protection, and people can easily touch them. Small children in particular are curious and like to touch these monuments.

Objective

Make an app you think is necessary in our life but does not exist.

Solution

Precious art works are generally protected in museums, but a number of them are unprotected. Some artifacts are dirty, and wooden artifacts and structures are easily damaged. So I made this educational game app for small children. By playing this game, they can learn what can hurt these monuments, and how to protect them.

It is the best time not only for children, but also adults.

Objective

Make a motion video to advertise the Chinese new year commercial website for the company.

Solution

In order to increase sales during the Chinese New Year festival, GRN-Group, a sports apparel brand, launched a website with a small game that you can share with your friends during the festival. The website is fun and promotes the brand. The motion video is colorful and lively to promote the festival.

It opens with sparkling fruits and an ultra-feminine floral air, passionately spun with musks, woods, and an addictive hint of marshmallow.

Solution

The website is designed with Ariana Grande’s favorite colors, pink and purple. Also the style is inspired by the simple shape of a flower to represent Ariana Grande’s youth and liveliness.

I grew up with a lot of pets because I like animals a lot. But one day I realized that my love for the animals needed to expand from the level of just love, to assuring their well being. After I watched a video showing a small albatross mistaking trash for food and starving to death, I decided to help animals in trouble by doing what I can, which is using design to communicate the story.
