As we all know, inspiration is very important for an artist. But where does it come from? I think there are two ways: from the surrounding objects that stimulate the thinking, and communication with the others. Thus, this time, I would like to use A KIND OF APPARATUS, CORRIDOR, through discussing whether the corridors are necessary any more, to design a residence for artists which can provide a inspiration enlightenment as well as a special public area for them to communicate.

Of course, they need to do physical exercise regularly. After all, working without sports can harm their health. They often watch movies to relax themselves.

Flat-share young artists usually lives alone or two of them rent an apartment together. They spend most of their time designing and drawing, day and night. Sometimes they need a huge desk for their pieces of drawings. Sometimes they have to make models, so the house should be set up a spacious and maybe public area to place the models. They also need a piece of wall to show their works, which can help them to reflect on their own design process, progress and deficiency.
CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENT HISTORY In the early years, the building consisted of a living space between two yards. When the corridor first appeared in the mid 17th century, it was only used to distinguish between the two systems of the master and servants' life and then became the efficient traffic streamline for the servants. In the late 19th century, with the influx of the working class, the corridor was used to split the different families and maintain the health environment. Later, the corridor existed in an extremely straightforward way and generated several enlarged nodes. However, after that, architects began to rethink and look for the oppotunities to interact, thus mixed the office and corridor space. In the late 20th century, the high-rise office building completely removed the corridor. The plan only consisted of the core tube and the public office space to provide an open communicating space for people.
Some corridors service only for circulation. CIRCULATION MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES Actually, corridor can offer as much functions as we imagine.
ARTISTS' DAILY LIFE

From my own perspective, the corridor should service for more than one person, which means the more people in the area, the more necessary the corridor is. Thus, the private living space does not need a corridor. However, as the development of the modern social life, the specified traffic function is not necessary any more. In the public space, the nature of the corridor should be blurred so that it can lead to more possibilities. Corridor should exist for more multiple functions, such as communication, exhibition and entertainment. Therefore, the corridor space will not be linear. It may have ambiguous shape and boundary. The corridor is considered to provide various functions for the certain peopel for particular occupation as well as surprises and expectations.
Inside the unit, the curve walls make a flowing space. The rooms are arranged according to the function analysis on the left. Both of the artists can see the curve glass wall when working.The exhibition hall on the first floor has a huge window that can be seen from the outside thus form a great place for the artists to show their own work and visit others' in the same time.

Designing is the most important part of an artist's daily life, thus the other functions are directly connected to the working area without corridors. It can help them lead an efficient life. There are two main routes: the working and guests route and the route for daily life which contains a spiral stairs and two ladders to save the space.

UNIT COMBINATION The project is located in a rectangular block adjacent to Beijing Sixth Ring Road and a river. The low plot ratio provides the possibility of such an unrestrained and ideal artists' house. The ground floor is the main exhibition and communication place where the exhibition hall of every unit are public and people can do sports there as well. It uses the pool for natural lighting. The platform floor has various yards with different views so that people can find their favourite place to think and chat with others. The roof floor has entrances for every unit. People can go upstairs and enter the private space directly.

Two curved walls lead people to go staight on and move in.
One staight wall and one curved wall direct people to make a turn.
One curved wall and a sperical wall make the turning more strong.
People are less willing to enter the seam between two staight walls.
Through the variation element of the unit, different combination can lead people to different routes and finally arrived at the public places. There are clear boundaries between the indoor space of the units and the outside corridors. Nodes of the corridors provide many functions for artists living here, such as exhibition, sports, thinking and chatting.
CREATIVE PARADISE I wish the artists living here can always find their inspiration space,sometimes maybe just a special light and shadow at certain time of a day. And see people unexpectly. There will always be artists communicating in the yards. Maybe one day an artist meets someone and finds that their thoughts are so alike thus hold a small exhibition together in the shared exhibition hall and become super partners.Anyway, the artists can think and find their developing orientation and see the residence as their creating wonderland. The section below shows the various corridors space interior and exterior which is filled with pink. The arrangement and combination of the units and the hemispherical walls form the retractable space. Various corridors between the units have different elements, such as path, stairs, pool, or slide. People can walk on the roof and enter their house so that this forms the communication of the sight line from three different heights. In addition, we can also see the semi-open exhibition area on the ground. The ladders, spherical glass and curved walls of the units can give the artists more fun in the daily life and work time.
Youth palace, regarded as the force of a certain area, provides young people with a rich space and streamline so that they can find themselves in the various space and activities, leave a good childhood memory, as well as improve their aesthetic. Since it is a triangle block, three angles are dramatically divided into two smaller angles each to strengthen the visual contradiction and stimulate the young people's individuality and reverse thinking. There are three volumes connected by an atrium, which seems like mechannical splicing and lead to spatial fluigity.

This project is surrounded by several schools, with a large scale of lawn square on the north side. The condition makes it a perfect place to be a energetic youth palace. The whole building has a sloping roof from the south to the north to adapt to the exposure of sunlight and serve for the people's visual scenery on the north square. The chimney effect is also used to natural ventilation,utilizing the south porous brick wall and the atrium, which makes it a enronmental friendly building.

7 The interior perspective on the right is the space over the badminton court. There are some rest seats that people staying there can watch the badminton game as well as the scenery out of the window. In addition, we can see a layer of glass wall inside the layer of brick wall. Therefore, people can experience the space between the doublelayered walls under the changing lights and shadows. I intend to create a variety of different feelings in a limited space so that young people can feel the energy and live with a positive attitude.

OVERVIEW AXONOMETRIC -FUNCTION & CIRCULATION There are three main streamlines in the building: for youth people to activity rooms, for students to the library and exhibition hall, and for the office stuff to go to the office. The streamlines interwoven, and every space has a lot of entrances and posibilities. Young people in the building can find anywhere they like to do their own things. The rich body mass changes also make the building full of light and shade changes.W

In order to respond to the hot humid climate in the south, the outer wall is made into a double layer. The inner layer is a glass curtain wall which can be opened, while the outer layer is a brick wall. Through a series of torsion, dislocation, the red brick wall achieves ventilation, shading and lighting changes. Multi level elevation also adds to the rich space.

There are four different porous rate of the brick wall which is the combination of the exploring types. The final elevation depends on the various functions of the room behind. Some public or activity space even has no brick walls. The brick wall brings lighting and shadows and is used to ventilate.

Stadium, regarded as the landmark of the city, often means huge scale and outstanding form, but as is often the case, little attention is paid to its relationship with the residents around. As a consequence, many are designed only for mega events, which leads to very low frequency in every day use. Thus, this time, I try to explore THE stadium and lead a healthier life.

This project is located at the east of Suzhou Stadium. The west and north side arterial roads bring most people. Meanwhile the large amount of residentials and greenland indicate that there ought to be a nice place for the citizens to do physical exercises every day rather than just watching games on weekends.
The automobile wheel's plan design can be seen as a steady and well balanced ring structure. Take the automobile wheels as an inspiration,according to the number of the branches, using the whole branch connection or from a certain point of bifurcation, to analysis the force and select the most stable type of the structure.
The stadium intends to attract people as many as during the mega events. There are three major areas for development and utilization —— junction of interior and exterior space, interesting space among the roof structure, and the stands and spacious home ground.
STRUCTURE UNIT EXPLORATION
The truss is better to be divided into two branches. The supporting ring is better to hang in the middle position.
ACTIVITY ANALYSIS DANCING The main playground can be used as the practice ground for some dancing clubs.
ORCHESTRA The baskeball hall can hold small band show. There are stands for the audiences.

Double ring system is a large span structure with superior stability and easy implementation.
The combination and decomposition of force reduce the load on the center.
Roof Covering Frame System —— provide each curve edge with the membrane.
The bearing cable is the main force structure, while the balance cable is used as a connection.
Deform the pressure ring based on the designed shape to make the roof seem more dynamic.
Light Membrane Structure —— covering the truss structure to reduce load.
Form triangular truss since triangular is the most stable geometry.
Strengthen the structure by connecting radial steel purlin with the lateral connection.
ETFE Membrane —— change the shape according to the direction of the sunlight.
Every two columns are connected with a radial beam as the base of the connection between the roof structure and the outer structure.
Strength the connection by combining the beam and column into a whole and reinforce the horizontal contact.
Gradient Grid Shading System —— prevent the direct sun light and allow the sight of people from both interior and exterior.
PINGPONG It occupies a small area and consume relevant fewer energy.
CINEMA The press briefing room can be use as a small cinema.
BILLIARDS It’s popular with older people and male.
GYMNASIUM It's the most common exercise for people to gain a good figure.
JOGGING It happens mostly in the morning.
BADMINTON It’s easy to learn so has many fans.
PARKOUR The stands can be added some blocks and poles for young people who like to run.

STRUCTURAL MODEL PHOTOS
Since the membranes above the roof structure are all translucent, the real main ground interior will be filled with affluent light and shadow changes. It provides an ideal public place for the residents to take part in various activities in the daily life.
The shelter of the platform uses triangular steel bracket which is stable and concise. It provides people with more spacious space. Twist with the whole body to a certain orientation.
The outer and inner circle columns fold inward from the top to the bottom, making the volume more light and flexible. People walking around the platform will have different spatial experience.
From God's point of view, the stadium, along with its surroundings, is very aesthetic. In fact, it is a public garden hinge, not only to provide a good place for the residents around, but also to make itself an impressive landmark. It gives people the impression of Suzhou that is in line with the gentle beauty.

The red boxes stand for the function of the daily use, while the blue ones represent the space that can only be use during the mega events. I have to think out ideas for residents around here to make full use of the building so that it is meaningful to the city.
On weekdays, some blocks and rods are added on the stands for the young people to run and do physical exercises.
The press releasing hall is preferred to be used as a small cinema for the residents to see a film in the evening.
USING ALL THE TIME Here are perspectives of the scenes of different uses of the stadium at different time. When holding a big game, the venue can accommodate more than 5000 audiences, including barrier-free seats, VIP stand and press box. On weekdays, the basketball hall can be fully used by various people -holding orchestras, parties and serving as playground for children as well.

The sea reclamation project started since 2005. It aims to build a new urban center in an unexplored area named Estuary. The site is 62.3 hectares with a river dividing the site into two parts. The nearest urban main road is beside the northwest corner of the site. There is also a mountain which is the highest point of the whole site. The area is considered to contain a variety of functions, such as residence, central business district, shopping mall, exhibition building, resort hotel and so on.

Define the entire region through the distribution of the five elements -- path, district, node, edge, and landmark. Paths and the central green belt are continuations of the texture of original block. The green belt that right in front of the bay serves a large scope of citizens as well as connecting the sight from the inland to the sea. Nodes are evenly distributed in the site as the connection and conversion of the function and structure, in the same time make the road rich in variation. The image of the city is an important factor the urban characteristics and it will continue to improve with the development of the city.

The low-rise buildings on both sides of the river provide a centripetal trend, thus form an enclosed fancy residence. The buildings behind of the river are arranged from the high to low according to the distance from the sea. There is a group of high-rise buildings in the center of the island, forming the center of this region.
SITE ANALYSIS inshore
There are many high-density residence nearby. Although mountains and coastal vegetation occupy large areas, there is no planned pedestrian landscape system so that people cannot relax and react to the sea conveniently and directly. The roads should be replanned to be more clear and logical. In addition, lack of large-scale central business district makes the region difficult to become a prosperous central part of the city. A landmark is needed to give the area strong identification from the view of the sea.

The offshore skyline reached its peak where the landmark is. In addition to the high-rise buildings in the central business district, other buildings have low height to avoid obscuring the sight line of the buildings in the back rows. Two layers of skylines staggered to provide more opportunities of the ocean view.
PATH Extend the original road network to form a regular grid road network.
The main road is transformed to a ring road to adapt the characteristics of the area.
Add another two ring roads thus form an axis to the sea and it is also an efficient traffic system.
The roads are scattered along the coast to react to the sea.
Backward terrace shortens the distance between people and the sea.

The closer to the sea, the lower density the buidlings have, which blurred the edges.

NARRITIVE SPACE C
Here are perspectives of the way when people walking along one of the paths. The first path is the main road of the area. It mainly services for traffic and connects the main districts and functions. The second chosen path is the road parallel to the river. It passes through the huge landscape, holds many activities, and shows the contrast between the slow life in the residence and the fast life in the business and commercial center. The last path is the walkway from mountain to the sea. It passes many important nodes and districts so that provides a way for people to have a walk after meal and keep healthy.
The correspongding SQUARES brings various sizes to the street. There are activities as well as walking people.
The gate as a LANDMARK stands in the estuary which makes path spacious. Enjoy the sunshine!
A Here marks the entry into the city. The boundary of the STREET is enclosed. The space between buildings along the street attracts people to walk in. From the residence in the south, people walk from narrow street to an open district. The corridor makes the PATH have a sense of place which connect the whole community together.
T h e r e i s a PAT H through the earthsheltered building so that the space vary vertically. The discontinuous walls make the space somewhat private. People can hear some activties thus they will turn and join in.
NODES on the street. At noon thousands of people from central business district will go across the bridge for lunch.
Entering the relatively enclosed expressway. The residence on the left is quiet and alignment while the central business DISTRICT on the right is busy and prosperous. It is the EDGE between the high-grade residence and the mountain. People can do morning exercises and other activities in this area. The quiet environment reminds people to enjoy their life.
The landscape is a blur boundary between the residence and the commercial center. It also provides an open district for entertainment and brings energy to the entire area.
The buildings and paths on the other side of the river have a sense of axis. It is a NODE on the river which leads people to go ahead and look to both sides. They can also interact with water.
The broken line PATH improves the privacy of the residence as well as the interest. It comes from the mountain and lead to the sea. People can go through the path but cannot see the end which is same as the Chinese gardens.
The path will go through the central business DISTRICT Different heights of the path lead to different views. It is a wonderful place for office workers to relax and get some fresh air.
It is the transition of the quiet landscape and big commercial centers. People living in the residence pass by every morning so the space under eaves provides breakfast for them. The glass roof ahead indicates that there is a shopping mall.
In the end, people walk to the EDGE of the land, looking to the sea and enjoy a beautiful view.
The PATHS built on stilts provide interaction of hte sight lines and the pore allows daylight in. The space is rich and full of shadows and activities.

Hand drawing, photograpgy are means by which I allow things external to architecture to stimulate my inspiration and inform my design process. Sometimes I do some art works as a hobby to seek and improve my individual aesthetic. Dabbling in other art fields often reminds me of the aesthetic generality among them and architecture.
