“A rural retail treasure trove for everyone” Langton Greenhouse and Garden Centre is a family run business in East Langton, Market Harborough, drawing visitors from Leicestershire, Northants and Rutland. It has grown from a greenhouse producing tomatoes for sale on Leicester and Bedford markets to an award-winning, multifarious offering. Since the Langton Stone Company was launched in 2011, Langton Greenhouse and Garden Centre has expanded its range of plants and gardening products and brought in lines of gifts and speciality foods. The well-known Greenhouse Café opened in 2013. Site products and services include plants, ornaments, garden furniture and horticultural advice, also locally sourced groceries and cuisine, plus gifts including toys, clothes, cards and homeware items. The Langton Stone Company has its own, newly re-furbed showroom in the beautifully rustic greenhouses, while the café can be booked for private functions. Visitors can buy groceries and meet friends for lunch, having first picked out some seasonal garden plants, grabbed a birthday jumper and card for someone or a housewarming gift, or had a look at the fine stone or garden furniture on show. Site concessions include a veterinary practice and a dog groomer’s, completing a variety of offerings all under one roof, or just outside.

The Speciality Gifts and Homewares centre stock the Sara Miller London range, chic brands Fransa, Numph and Goose Island, beautiful Hot Tomato and Dansk jewellery, also classical homeware by Broste and Ib Laursen. The Langton Greenhouse and Garden Centre is fast becoming a very popular and successful attraction, extending its reach to Leicester, Corby, Uppingham and beyond. All demographics are catered for, from baby boomers, couples, ‘ladies who lunch’, and young families making the most of the space and toys afforded to children in the Greenhouse Café, to ‘gen- Xs, Ys and Zs’ plus ‘millennials’. A loyalty scheme discounts goods for the loyal and digitally savvy clientele, which historically has come from around Market Harborough and rural south Leicestershire. The thoughtful, tasteful variety of products and services, heritage, expertise plus excellent customer service make the customer’s experience memorable, whether eating with friends or clients or dropping by after a school run to one of the local kindergartens, primary or secondary schools. Spacious parking in a newly re-laid car park and good accessibility on the Melton Road are distinct advantages. There is truly something for everyone, and you don’t need a garden to come in!

The Langtons has an easily navigable website and Facebook page, also Twitter handle and Instagram account to share product launches and other useful information. Local website Best Of Market Harborough recently awarded The Langtons its “Highly Commended Business” award for 2018. Loyalty scheme members receive exclusive offers and priority bookings, while social media is creating good customer feedback and interaction. Gardening, orchid growing and wreath making masterclasses and BBC Radio Leicester live broadcasts remain popular events, as do Mothers’ Day and St Patrick’s Day menus, and other seasonal, festive promotions and calendar events. “The Langton Greenhouses are a lovely place to eat and enjoy good atmosphere, stunning settings and first-class service. It’s a perfect pit-stop on my way to the Kingpower stadium!” Mark Pougatch, Chief Presenter ITV Sport, BBC, Radio 5 Live and BT Sports broadcaster journalist OPEN Mon to Sat - 9am to 5pm

Local standing in the community has recently been enhanced by a partnership deal with one of Market Harborough's finest, oldest institutions. All Market Harborough Building Society members enjoy discounts at the Langton Greenhouse of 10%, with a member card that gives them savings with local businesses and services. In addition, The Langton Greenhouse And Garden Centre was recently runner-up in the Leicestershire Rural Achievement Awards, best rural business section. Last but not least, the new Langton Stone showroom superbly showcases its on-site porcelain and grade-A stone service, with 25 years' heritage and experience to show.

Our Garden Centre is our oldest and proudest venture... The Garden Centre was first opened 47 years ago (in 1970) by Glenda and Stewart Haddon, under the name Glen Stewart Nurseries, as the Langtons primary garden and plant centre, growing and selling all their own plants on site. Though the name has changed, and nearly 5 decades have passed, that same spirit and passion for providing the South Leicestershire and Rutland area with only the highest quality of plants and outdoor essentials is still what drives us today. The business remains a family owned enterprise and something we’re all very proud of. We have, however, expanded beyond anything Glenda and Stewart could have conceived back in the summer of ‘69 when construction started on the 8 industrial glass houses and propogating houses which make up our site, but reminders of the way things used to be are littered about the site. Our heritage and provenance is our springboard, but our progress and development hasn’t ever slowed pace, and won’t any time soon either.

Our plant centre is always stocked to the brim with whatever the season has to offer, and we are very highly regarded for the standards of our plants. Our team’s knowledge of horticulture is plain to see when taking a stroll through our plant centre, and the care and attention we provide all of our plants gives it the very best start in life. It’s this comprehensive and proactive care which our customers trust year after year. Beyond plants, we stock a wide selection of all kinds of outdoor living products, as well as gardening tools, horticultural chemicals, aggregates and sundries which make us a veritable one-stop shop for everything your garden needs to become a true extension of your living space and achieve whatever potential you wish to expose in it. Our team are also on hand 7 days a week, all year round, to advise and guide you through everything you could ask regarding your garden. As well as that, you might take advantage of our bespoke planting service to produce you some extraordinary floral arrangements, stunning seasonal hanging baskets and perfect pots.

These days, people see gardens as an extension of their homes, and there is everything here to enjoy outdoor living to the full.

Living, giving, food and wellbeing, we’ve got you covered... Building on the success of the Garden Centre, and then later the success of the Greenhouse Café, we created a small lifestyle and gift offering in the later half of 2013. The initial shop was 15 or so small local artisans, designers and producer whom we brought together as a shop of concession, run for and by local small business owners. It was very successful, and we found it complimented our set up perfectly. ff the back of the concessions’ success, we too began to stock O the Gift department with Garden Gifts, and Greetings Cards. Since that time, many of our original concessions have moved on and, over time, we have taken back full responsibility for the space. The Gift department was then combined with our small Farm Shop to create the Food, Home and Gift department, which has since grown exponentially to encompass all aspects of our initial offering. We stock beautiful design-led clothing from Nümph and Goose Island, as well as our stunning range of jewellery and accessories from Dansk Smykkekunst. Our wellbeing section includes Heyland & Whittle, Skandinavisk, Parkminster, La Bonne Maison and, now, candles and diffusers by Shifa, Vineyard and, local Harborough company, Seven Scents. Our stunning range of homewares is made up of a handpicked selection from producers such as Garden Trading, Nkuku, Broste Copenhagen, Ib Laursen, Cookut and CozyLiving. The clear inspiration for our collections is clean, modern living with a rustic country style. Whether you’re a culinary expert or novice, there’s plenty to pique your interest in our Speciality Foods selection. We stock COOK frozen meals, as well as a variety of different ready to cook dishes, cakes and confectionary, preserves and jams, wines, beers and spirits. There really is something for everyone. Gifts, homewares and largely locally-sourced food/drink offerings have been growing consistently over the last few years. The range includes Scandinavian designed clothing and jewellery, luxuriously fragrant candles and diffusers, great gift ideas for men, as well as speciality foods and chic homewares, all tied together with beautiful gift wrap and humorous greetings cards.

“It’s so important, these days, to make time to sit back and enjoy a good cup of coffee...”

At the Greenhouse Café, we don’t go for quirks or fads to makes us interesting, we keep it simple and see no shame in that. It’s so important, these days, to make time to sit back and enjoy a good cup of coffee or a slice of cake. Maintaining these sorts of little luxuries, allowing oneself some time to enjoy a moments peace, keeps life in perfect balance. Serving expertly crafted coffees, wholesome handmade cakes, fresh and delicious lunches, and plenty more besides. For those who can't stick around, there are fresh soups, salads and sandwiches to take away. The Café also plays host to private functions with several competitive venue hire options.

Our Stone Company has been 30 years in the making... Tom Byrne, whose parents owned and ran the Glen Stewart Nursery from 1977 to 2010, left the family business at 18 and trained as a tiler. He found, after a few years in the trade, that he was particularly gifted at it too. He set up a company with a friend of his who was fellow tiler, Dean Rossi, and ‘Rossi & Byrne’ was founded in 1997. For over a decade, they dominated the high-end tiling market in the Leicestershire area, and went from strength to strength. The company, having grown exponentially larger than either Tom Byrne or Dean had expected, was merged with another firm, ran by Dean’s brother. This coincided with family circumstances which left Tom Byrne and DJ at the helm of the family business back in Market Harborough, and so Tom Byrne sold his share in the company to the other directors and put the money into the Langton Stone Company Ltd. with a focus on the supply side of the industry. Langton Stone is a leading local supplier of Grade A stone and porcelain tiles, stocking and fitting a superb range of tiles from Ca' Pietra, Marshalls Tile Interiors and Staffords. We offer bespoke installations by experienced fitters, with a free, no obligation site visit, expert advice and high quality, professional service. These product ranges are among some of the most sought after stones and porcelains on the market today. We are constantly updating our ranges and we are incredibly proud of the breadth of variety in the selection of tiles we sell. Our combination of experience in both the fixing and retailing of stone and porcelain products makes us a valuable partner in any wall or floor tiling project. We’re always just a call or click away, and we’re always more than happy to help... This offering is the foundation our Garden Centre, Gift Shop and Greenhouse Café have built on since the 1960s.

Tom Byrne’s 35 years’ experience retailing and fixing stone and porcelain makes Langton Stone perfect for all wall or floor tiling projects. The Langton Stone Co now seeks partnerships with developers, builders, architects and interior designers, alongside its consumer jobs. Langton Stone offers a bespoke installation service by experienced fitters, with a free, no obligation site visit, expert advice and high quality, professional service.

Inheritance Tax

UK Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax charged on your estate when you die. Your estate is basically everything that you own including your house, any other properties you have, cars, bikes, boats, savings, stocks and shares, life insurance policies as well as personal effects such as jewellery. IHT is potentially charged at a rate of 40% on the value of everything you own above a threshold known as the Nil Rate Band which is currently £325,000 per person and is frozen up to 2021. The Nil Rate Band is the value of your estate that is not chargeable to IHT and is set by the government. When you die your estate is not liable to tax on any assets up to this amount. However, anything above this amount could be taxed at a flat rate of 40%. In addition since 6th April 2017 if you leave your home to direct lineal descendants which includes your children (as well as adopted, foster and stepchildren) and grandchildren the value of your estate before tax is paid increases with the addition of what is known as the Residence Nil Rate Band. This is currently £125,000, rising to £150,000 in the next tax year and again to £175,000 from the start of the 2020/21 tax year. The amount of the RNRB is the lower of the value of your home or the amount of the RNRB. The tax rate for an individual’s IHT on death will be reduced from 40% to 36% if they have left at least 10% of their estate that is liable for IHT to charity in their will. This was introduced in the 2011 Budget to encourage more people to make gifts to charities on death. Without IHT planning your beneficiaries could be faced with a large tax bill when you die. They may even have to sell the family home in order to pay the bill. With some sensible planning you can ensure that your loved ones benefit fully from your estate. There are many approaches to reducing your IHT liability. Some are more complex than others and some may not be suitable for you, so it is always important to get professional financial advice.
