GREETINGS, CADETS! CADETS! GREETINGS, CADETS! GREETINGS, GREETINGS, CADETS! GREETINGS, CADETS! GREETINGS, CADETS! GREETINGS, CADETS! GREETINGS, CADETS! CADETS! GREETINGS, CADETS! CADETS! CADETS! CADETS! CADETS! CADETS! Welcome to your second year at Starfleet Academy. Science fair winners, class presidents, varsity athletes — you're here because we want the best, and you are it. Now, who is ready to make some science? In the Federation Starfleet, an officer or commissioned officer was an individual who had attended and graduated from the four-year cadet program of Starfleet Academy. Upon graduation from the Academy, the cadet was granted a commission appointing him or her to the rank of Ensign, or in exceptional circumstances Lieutenant junior grade. Trades such as Doctor or Counselor graduated as a Lieutenant junior grade as standard due to the extra time spent studying before graduating. These special recognitions are granted by my committee. Before graduating from Starfleet Academy, you will determine the next step in your career by selecting a general direction for your studies that will reflect on your future specialization as a Starfleet officer serving on a starbase, aboard a starship, or even at Starfleet Command like yours truly. As you begin the new school year, it is vital to inform you of what decisions lay before you in the near future. You will learn what it is like to be a Starfleet officer preliminarily. This document outlines the duties and leisures of typical crewmen based on their division, whether it is command, operations or sciences.

General Overview of the Command Division Retrieved from the records at Memory Alpha, Federation’s central library, 2370.

Brief Summary The command division was the corps of officers and crewmen within Starfleet who specialized in command and control functions on starbases, aboard starships, and at Starfleet Command. Members of the command division were trained in leadership and had tactical training allowing them to decisively take action in organizing and mobilizing Starfleet crews to perform missions. Command officers included most all of the admiralty, captains, executive officers, adjutants, pilots, and flight controller (or helmsman). Command division personnel also filled posts as tactical officers and sometimes in ordnance departments. By far the most complicated track, the command division includes both line and staff officers and all personnel, both enlisted and commissioned of the following corps:

History of the Uniform In the Earth's Starfleet of the 2140s and 2150s, line officers of command division wore gold division stripes on their uniforms. By 2233, command division personnel wore blue. Gold was again the color of the command division throughout the 2250s and 2260s, worn by line officers and flag officers of this division. Officers in the command division wore a five-pointed star with a lengthened upper point as an insignia on their assignment patch. By the 2270s, new uniforms showed different division colors, the command division was signified by white backing their Starfleet badge, and also on uniform bands and epaulets. This continued onto the 2280s uniforms, and the insignia used gave the officer the option of wearing command division white uniform insignia, with another department color banded across, or the opposite, with department color insignia with command white banded across. By the uniforms used from 2350s onward, red had become the official command division color, and this has continued through several uniform styles to this day, as you may have observed around campus. An officer who belonged to the command division sometimes wore the division color of another department in which they specialized if said command officer became a security chief, engineer, or commanded a science department. Below, you will find a timeline detailing a century of Starfleet uniform command division colors.

General Overview of the Operations Division Retrieved from the records at Memory Alpha, Federation’s central library, 2370.

Brief Summary The operations division, also referred to as engineering division, was the corps of officers and crewmen within Starfleet who specialized in services and military functions on starbases, aboard starships, and at Starfleet Command. Members of the operations division may have specialized in a ship or base service, administration, or military operations, or served as staff officers. Operations officers included engineers, security and tactical, and some service specializations such as communications. Operations division personnel also filled administrative posts as yeomen, personnel officers, and portmasters. By the 24th century, this division had new postings established on ships, such as operations officers or chief of operations.

History of the Uniform Officers who belonged to the operations division sometimes wore the division color of another department than that which they specialized in. For example, if an operations officer were to become a department head, he or she might have worn the colors of the command division, or an officer with dual specialties in sciences and operations might have worn the sciences colors. By the 2270s, new uniforms showed different division colors, the operations division was signified by two differing colors, with red backing the Starfleet badge, and also on uniform bands and epaulets, for engineering and maintenance staff. Security and services crew wore gray badge backings and bands. The operations division was changed again with the 2280s uniforms, with gray representing both security and services, but also sciences. Engineering and maintenance wore gold colors, which also represent some conn divisions like pilots and navigators. The insignia used gave the officer the option of wearing command division white uniform insignia, with another department color like operations' banded across, or the opposite, with department color insignia with command white banded across. For the uniforms used from 2350s onward, gold had become the operations division color, and this continued through several Starfleet uniform styles, including the most recent style, and even several styles observed in alternate futures.

General Overview of the Sciences Division Retrieved from the records at Memory Alpha, Federation’s central library, 2370.

Brief Summary The sciences division was the corps of officers and crewmen within Starfleet who specialized in both scientific and medical research and control functions on starbases, aboard starships, and at Starfleet Command. Members of the sciences division specialized in sensors, research, theoretical and physical laboratory work, biological studies, and also as technicians, medics, and surgeons. Officers who belonged to the sciences division sometimes wore the division color of a department other than that in which they specialized. For example, if a science officer became a department head, they might have worn the colors of command division, or if they had a dual speciality in an operations division department, an alternate color might have been worn.

History of the Uniform Beginning with the Earth Starfleet of the 2140s and 2150s, line officers and noncoms of science division wore blue division stripes on their uniforms. This use of blue continued through several uniform styles until 2260s. On starships, such as the USS Enterprise, science division crewmembers had a specialty insignia in their insignia patch, a circle with two longitudinal lines dividing it. The sciences division was changed again with the 2280s uniforms, with green continuing to represent medical personnel, but science and technical staff now wore gray colors (which was a style shared by services personnel of operations division). The insignia used gave the officer the option of wearing command division white uniform insignia, with another department color like sciences' banded across, or the opposite, with department color insignia (green or grey, in this case) with command white banded across. On the uniforms used from 2350s onward, blue had again become the sciences division color. The second variant of the 2371 uniform, while still referred to as blue, was actually a shade of green, jungle green. The color was later be applied to the 2373 uniforms as well and is in use to this day.

These officers will serve as department heads such as chief medical officers and head science officers. Opportunities for command assignments are somewhat limited for these officers due to their lack of overall command experience and training. However, officers who have taken and passed the Bridge Officer's Test can be promoted in rank to Commander and are certified to command a starship if necessary. In most instances, however, science division officers will only take command of a ship or starbase in the absence of other senior officers due to such circumstances as an emergency, illness of a commanding officer or manpower shortages as may occur in wartime, for example. Additionally, these officers may fill the role of executive officer where needed. Jadzia Dax, for instance, took over as XO and then commander of the USS Defiant during the Dominion War when the situation required it.
