The existence of different regional dialects is widely recognized and often the source of some humor for those living in different regions. Going beyond stereotypes, those involved in the serious investigation of regional dialects have devoted a lot of survey research to the identiďŹ cation of consistent features of speech found in one geographical area compared to another. These dialect surveys ofteninvolvepainstakingattentiontodetailandtendtooperatewithveryspeci ďŹ ccriteria in identifying acceptable informants.

Isoglosses and dialect boundaries. An isogloss represents a boundary between the areas with regard to that one particular linguistic item. When a number of isoglosses come together in this way, a more solid line, indicating a dialect boundary, can be drawn.
