“Studying at the Yeovil College University Centre has been an amazing experience. Having opportunities to work with companies both big (like creating an award winning film for Leonardo) or small (like filming a music video in Cornerstone Autos) has given me a sense of what it’s like to work with these vastly different companies.“ Benjamin Gay, Graduate of YCUC

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP Yeovil College University Centre works with the University of Plymouth, University of Gloucestershire and Pearson, alongside many more professional bodies, to bring you a range of excellent, industry-recognised qualifications. When you study at Yeovil College University Centre your final qualification will be awarded by one of our prestigious partners. You will receive a qualification from one of these partners in the same way as others who have physically studied at one of our partner organisations, with the benefit of studying locally in Yeovil. We work collaboratively as a community to the benefit of our students, ensuring that you have local access to a wide range of high-quality appropriate qualifications, excellent teaching and first-class support services.

David Dummackin, graduated with a BA(Hons) Childhood Care and Education from the Yeovil College University Centre.by MA at Exeter University. “Throughout my educational journey I have never been taught in a way that clicked for me, all the notes were there but the song seemed to be in a different language and something I couldn’t connect to. That was until I met Yeovil College tutor, Fiona Pavey. Her passion for teaching was clear from the first day I met her, she cares about her pupils. Fi took on the challenge and started at point one, sentence structure, academic writing, paragraphing correctly, spelling and giving me extra reading. Sometimes personal struggles occur and for me it’s been a really challenging couple of years with mental health problems, illnesses, full-time work being a husband and father and struggling to fit everything in and not feeling like your failing. This year I had the support of so many people; family, college, peers, professionals; its ok to not be ok. At the end of the year I gained a comfortable 2:1 scoring in the mid 60’s; I would not have believed this possible 18 months ago! Due to this outstanding teaching I felt confident enough to take on a Masters.”

FINANCIAL SUPPORT We understand that financial considerations are an important part of the university application decision-making process and we are here to offer support. You need to think about both tuition fees as well as living costs. A huge benefit of studying within our dedicated University Centre in Yeovil is that we are local, and therefore in most cases additional living costs may not be a concern. To further help you, we are able to spread the cost of study via an instalment plan. For more information visit: www.gov.uk/student-finance

Tuition fees Our tuition fees depend on the level and qualification you are studying, specific amounts can be found on our website. Students can choose to pay their tuition fees upfront or alternatively, take out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government through Student Finance England, which will defer repayment until students earn over a certain threshold each year (£26,575 from April 2020) and will be written off after 30 years. Repayments are proportionate to your salary - for example, if you earn £28,800 per year, you will repay £16 per month. For information visit www.gov.uk/student finance.

Maintenance Loan There is a Maintenance Loan available for full-time study from the Government through Student Finance England to support you with living costs such as rent and bills. The amount you can borrow will depend on where you live, study and your annual household income. You can also apply for a reduced rate of maintenance loan if you are studying a part-time, full degree. For more information see gov.uk/student-finance.

DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS Yeovil College works with more than 1,000 local and national employers to deliver the very best work-based learning. Our employer partners tell us what skills and knowledge they require from their apprentices and we incorporate these requirements into our qualifications, creating Higher and Degree Apprenticeships. What is a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship? Our top level Apprenticeship programmes involve students working towards work-based learning qualifications at Level 4 and above with current, up-to-date content relevant to their sector. How will it benefit you? • You will earn a full-time salary whilst you study; • Your employer is likely to cover the cost of any fees for you; • You will still be paid when attending scheduled taught sessions; • It is common that apprentices are offered a permanent job or a promotion at the end of their programme.

Progression: Higher and Degree Apprenticeships may include a HNC, HND, Foundation Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree or Professional Qualification element to the qualification, depending on the level at which you study. You may also progress to new job roles, such as management or technical specialists. Find out more: If you are interested in Higher or Degree Apprenticeships you should contact the Employer Engagement team at Yeovil College: apprenticeships@yeovil.ac.uk or 01935 845392 for further advice and support.

Michael Lowde - HND Level 5 Aeronautical Engineering, YCUC Having moved from his home town in Lancashire specifically to study our Aeronautical Engineering Degree in partnership with his employer, Leonardo, Michael said: “I have a passion for aviation, so this course seemed to be a perfect match for me! The course has a good mixture between theoretical and applied engineering topics. I would recommend Yeovil College University Centre, the engineering staff are great, most have had interesting careers in engineering roles. The College offers good support, you’re not left on your own.”

YEOVIL COLLEGE UNIVERSITY CENTRE COURSES We have a vast portfolio of flexibly delivered qualifications available at the Yeovil College University Centre. Our programmes have been designed with real people in mind; we are conscious of work-life balance, changing circumstances and the need to progress through qualifications with pace. Most qualifications, including full-time, are taught over 1 or 2 days/evenings per week and days will remain the same throughout the year. Taught lessons cover 32 weeks of the year (mid September to June) with holiday periods and the Christmas break built in. Some qualifications may allow time for consolidated learning through work placements. In addition to your taught sessions, there is an expectation that you undertake independent study to complete research, preparation and assignments, but again, this is very flexible and undertaken at a time and place that suits you. Refer to page 6 for an explanation of qualifications available at the Yeovil College University Centre.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Access to Higher Education provides the perfect platform to support adults (19+) to develop a new set of skills, improve confidence and update their foundation knowledge base to support a change of career. It is often used by those people who wish to embark upon university-level study and/or who want a transition year before progressing directly to the Yeovil College University Centre, one of our partner universities or an alternative institution. Access to Higher Education (HE) aims to give adults with significant life experience a fresh chance at learning and education. It is a nationally recognised qualification representing an alternative to the traditional A Level route to University. As well as giving you the opportunity to gain the academic skills you will need for a higher level of study, Access qualifications aim to support students so that they increase in confidence and develop strong interpersonal skills. We have introduced a flexible study arrangement for our Access programmes, offering day and evening study options. We now run a Pre-Access provision for those returning to education or those who need to up-skill in a subject area or undertake Maths and/or English prior to undertaking a full Access programme. Pre-Access will run parellel to Maths & English where required.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR ACCESS TO EDUCATION If you are aged 19 or over you may be expected to pay full fees, but you will be able to apply for a loan under the Government’s Advanced Learning Loans scheme to cover the cost of these fees. www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan/overview What if you could write off these fees? If you complete one of our Access to Higher Education courses and then immediately go on and complete a degree or other recognised higher education qualifications, you won’t have to repay the remaining loan for the Access to Higher Education course; in effect, the balance of your Access to Higher Education loan will be written off, and you will receive the course for free. www.yeovil.ac.uk/TravelFinanceSupport
