“For 12 years I have dreamt of becoming part of the NHS. However I wasn’t sure how to go about it as my grades weren’t fantastic and I didn’t know if I would be able to afford to do it with three children. I heard about the Access to HE Nursing and Midwifery. I hadn’t been in education for many years so this was quite daunting heading back. The teaching staff were so amazing and supportive, their love and passion for the subjects they teach made it so much easier take in and learn. I even managed to work as a Health Care Assistant at Yeovil District Hospital, which is such a rewarding job even during the pandemic we are currently dealing with. This was perfect for fitting in around the course and helps you get essential experience working in the hospital. I have such amazing new friends for life and I WILL BE A NURSE!” Sabrina Caplen – Access to HE (Nursing & Midwifery) 6 | yeovil.ac.uk | #WhereLearningComesToLife

We are Ofsted Good

“After working as a history teacher in a public High School for 13 years I decided to move with my family from Romania to the United Kingdom, ready to start a new life. I am working at Yeovil District Hospital as a catering assistant (part-time) and Healthcare assistant (bank contract). Considering my wish to become a nurse I applied for Access to H.E. (Nursing and Midwifery). Classes held in the evening, two times per week gave me the flexibility to meet my professional and academic responsibilities. I met nice teachers who were always ready to help me.” Camelia Vijiian – Access to HE (Nursing & Midwifery) Camelia has a conditional offer to study BSc(Hons) Adult Nursing at Bournemouth University

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Access to HE course. I have learnt so much more than I ever anticipated I could learn and have felt that I have been able to push myself and achieve things I never thought I would achieve. The access course is very well structured and staff work together well to deliver the course.” Naomi Finnegan – Access to HE (Science) Naomi is currently an Access to Higher Education Science student and plans to study a BSc in Dental Hygiene.

"I chose to study the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education) course awarded by the University of Exeter at the YCUC to develop my understanding of teaching pedagogy and practice. I would recommend the one year course as it enabled me to progress my professional practice and knowledge of curriculum studies." James Guest – Yeovil College University Centre graduate

T LEVELS ARE COMING Yeovil College has been selected, along with only 64 providers nationally, to deliver T Levels from September 2021. If you’re in year 10, this is an exciting time for you, with many more options provided than ever before! T Levels are a new qualification designed to give young people a head start towards the future career they want. They follow GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A Levels. The 2-year qualification brings classroom and work placement together, on a course designed with employers and businesses. T Levels take two years of full time study, five days per week. Around 80% of your time will be in the classroom and 20% in the workplace, suiting those who feel ready to join the world of work. With the introduction of T Levels, the government aims not only to create a more skilled and able workforce in the future but also to streamline technical education and prioritise skills that sit within 15 industry routes.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Access to Higher Education provides the perfect platform to support adults (19+) to develop a new set of skills, improve confidence and update their foundation knowledge base to support a change of career. It is often used by those people who wish to embark upon university-level study and/or who want a transition year before progressing directly to the Yeovil College University Centre, one of our partner universities or an alternative institution. Access to Higher Education (HE) aims to give adults with significant life experience a fresh chance at learning and education. It is a nationally recognised qualification representing an alternative to the traditional A Level route to University. As well as giving you the opportunity to gain the academic skills you will need for a higher level of study, Access qualifications aim to support students so that they increase in confidence and develop strong interpersonal skills. We have introduced a flexible study arrangement for our Access programmes, offering day and evening study options. We now run a Pre-Access provision for those returning to education or those who need to up-skill in a subject area or undertake Maths and/or English prior to undertaking a full Access programme. Pre-Access will run parellel to Maths & English where required.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR ACCESS TO EDUCATION If you are aged 19 or over you may be expected to pay full fees, but you will be able to apply for a loan under the Government’s Advanced Learning Loans scheme to cover the cost of these fees. www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan/overview What if you could write off these fees? If you complete one of our Access to Higher Education courses and then immediately go on and complete a degree or other recognised higher education qualifications, you won’t have to repay the remaining loan for the Access to Higher Education course; in effect, the balance of your Access to Higher Education loan will be written off, and you will receive the course for free. www.yeovil.ac.uk/TravelFinanceSupport
