Prepare for a loud, interactive storytime! From When you’re happy and you know it to Heads, shoulders, knees and toes there is something for all ages in this well-rounded kit about learning to love yourself.

Books

YRL has storytime kits to help library staff present fun, interactive programs for children up to eight years old. Program plans, resource guides, craft ideas and activity booklets are also included. In an effort to further promote literacy skill development, some kits include templates for rhyme booklets to distribute to parents and caregivers.

All about me

Animal tales: on safari Lions, leopards and lemurs, we’re going on a safari! Enjoy stories and puppets featuring exotic animals from other continents. Puppets

Early literacy kits Early literacy kits are available to enhance baby and toddler programs. Aimed at developing literacy skills for children from birth to 18– months and 18– to 36– months, these kits have less books and more interactive toys and tactile objects for creative, hands-on activities.

Flannel board stories

I spy with my little eye something that is brown! Could it be a monkey? Or an antelope? Maybe a beaver? Go on some wild animal adventures in the zoo with this fun interactive kit.

The programming plans and tip sheets will aid staff in creating a series of programs that will teach fundamental skills through play and ageappropriate activities and help parents be more involved in their child’s development.

Aboriginal kits YRL offers Aboriginal kits to supplement local public library and school collections with materials on the history, traditions and perspectives of First Nations, Metis and Inuit people. The thematic kits contain a variety of print and non-print materials for children, teens and adults that can be circulated.

It may appear all fun and games, but gaming also has been shown to improve cognitive and perceptual skills. Attract users by hosting a video game program, such as a tournament, at your library with an Xbox Kinect kit. Each kit contains an Xbox console, controller and Kinect sensor; staff can choose from a great selection of games that will appeal to younger and older audiences.

World Languages kits

World languages KITS YRL member libraries can request World Languages kits to offer materials in languages to their patrons. Individual titles in the kits can be placed on hold and interlibrary loaned through TRACpac. Available on a first come, first served basis, libraries can request specific language kits by emailing yrlquery@yrl.ab.ca. The items will be assigned to your library and circulate for a minimum of three months. YRL reserves the right to request the return of the kit at any time.

Dinosaurs

Ssshhhhh, it’s time for bed! This kit is great for pyjama storytimes or evening programs. The songs, rhymes and stories will be sure to tucker out little ones.

RAWR means hello to a dinosaur. Boys and girls will be delighted with the variety of stories and information about these prehistoric beasts. Playtime is a bonus with the assortment of toy dinosaurs.

Spring with duck and frog

Under the big top

Ribbit, ribbit, quack! Read all of your favourite stories featuring Finklehopper frog, wide-mouthed frog and five little ducks. Use this with the a Spring kit for a series of programs to welcome this blossoming season.

Come one, come all to an amazing circus extravaganza! This production includes all your favourite animal puppets and features a horde of entertaining stories.

Under the Sea (2)

Use this kit at the start of growing season to inspire your participants to help in the garden this summer. Pair these stories with a bean seed growing activity so the kids can watch it mature all summer long.

Wild, Wild West

World Languages Kits

Yee-haw! Take a ride out to the Wild West with stories and puppets in this rowdy kit.

14 kits in six different languages: Chinese, Dutch, German, Russian, Spanish and Tagalog. The language kits contain at least 25 books and have both fiction and non-fiction books geared towards adults. Two Spanish kits comprising juvenile titles are also available.

Xbox Kinect Kits (3)

Cozy up inside the library to listen to tales of snow and winter. Puppets, craft ideas and a variety of stories are included in each kit to bring some enjoyment through the cold months. Hot chocolate after the program is a must!

Book an Xbox Kinect kit for single library events such as a teen game night or keep it for up to a month for a wide variety of programming. Try a Just Dance party, after school Wipeout competition or a men versus boys Star Wars tournament. An assortment of games that are suited to all ages and abilities are available.

Winter wonderland Brrrrrr! This kit is perfect for storytime in front of the fireplace. Enjoy winter tales with these furry friends: puffin, penguin, wolf and bear.

aboriginal kits

ALBERTA AND CANADA (GRADES K – 6) This kit’s materials help children appreciate Alberta and Canada’s history and cultural heritage by recognizing the presence and influence of First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples and becoming familiar with oral traditions, narratives and stories.

Wordless Picture Books Put a twist on storytime — encourage kids to tell the story based on what’s happening in the pictures. This kit is great for all ages because the stories can be adapted for younger or older audiences.

COMMUNITY (Grades k – 6)

GENERAL INTEREST FOR ALL AGES

The materials in this kit incorporate FNMI content into the focus on community, family and traditions that is part of the Alberta Education social studies curriculum.

This collection contains a diverse range of books and music for children, teens and adults. It is ideal for supplementing a public library collection or a temporary display.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (Grades k – 6)

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Storybook, folktales and novels integrate FNMI content into the elementary English language arts curriculum comprehending texts and exploring ideas, feelings and experiences.

A range of fiction and non-fiction books for children and teenagers infuses FNMI content into the topics of nutrition, personal health and physical activity.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (Grades 7 – 12)

LANGUAGE

Age-appropriate materials, including oral stories, novels and poetry, give students an opportunity to recognize and appreciate how literature conveys the Aboriginal experience.

There are a number of Cree language-learning materials in this kit, including bilingual storybooks, workbooks nd phrase books.

GENERAL INTEREST FOR ADULTS

SOCIAL STUDIES (GRADES 7 – 12)

A variety of non-fiction and fiction titles supplemented with audio-visual materials create a browsing collection that is suitable for use in public libraries.

Resources have been compiled to explore and assess the origins, histories, and social and political changes of Aboriginal societies in pre- and post-Confederation Canada.
