O

nce upon a time, there were two little boys called Dan and Tom. They went to school together and were the best of friends. But their time at school was nearly over; they were both about to go to University in different corners of the country, and they knew that all of their memories together would soon start to fade away.

B

efore the boys left their school, they wanted to make an unforgettable yearbook. Unfortunately, the only yearbooks available on the market were flimsy and cheap. But they wanted something that was so high quality, that they would be able to keep their memories forever. And so they decided to design their own book.

T

hey worked on the design of their book for days and nights, until they were sure that it was Just Right. Then they got it printed using the highest quality materials. Everyone said it was the best yearbook they had ever seen, and students from far and wide asked Dan and Tom if they would make their yearbooks for them too.

A

nd so they created Yearbook Machine, a magical system that meant that everyone could have a yearbook that was as high quality as the original book designed by Dan and Tom for their own school. Every year, more and more people heard the news, until it became known far and wide that Yearbook Machine was the best way to make school and university yearbooks!

OUR CUSTOMERS SAY... See more of what our customers have said about Yearbook Machine at http://yearbookmachine.com/testimonials

I grew up with a yearly yearbook, and the one created for us by the young and enthusiastic staff of Yearbook Machine is by far the best of them all. INGEBORG K. Downing College, Cambridge University

The finalists loved exercising their banter on the YBM website in a silent library, stalking yearbook profiles during short breaks, and reminiscing with nostalgia during nights of revision. ELIZABETH H. Lincoln College, Oxford University

Yearbook Machine is incredible, it allowed us to get 300 people to make their profiles in a very short space of time. It was so simple. We are all ecstatic with our books, and everyone has said they will keep them forever. MATTIE B. Grey College, Durham University

18

Yearbook Machine became the most trending website on our school’s internet system, beating even Facebook and Wikipedia. It was so easy to use that the majority of the leavers had too much to say as opposed to too little. CONNIE B. Gresham’s School

You guys are awesome! JIGAR P. Pembroke College, Oxford University

Having Yearbook Machine design our yearbook was excellent – we were still able to make our own decisions about the style, layout and content, yet didn’t have to worry about creating a professional end product ourselves. MADDIE P. Sevenoaks School

Working with Yearbook Machine has been a great experience. The system itself is ingenious and the books were of exceptional quality. Elegant, colourful, entertaining - definitely a service Concord College will use in the future. PATRICIA V. Concord College

OUR CUSTOMERS SAY...

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YEARBOOK MACHINE? Having researched other companies we quickly saw Yearbook Machine was by far the superior company, in terms of price, ability to customise and the online system. We initially e-mailed a few companies to enquire over prices but were impressed at how quickly the Yearbook Machine team responded and the friendliness of their response.

WHAT WAS GOOD ABOUT YEARBOOK MACHINE? The online system is excellent, easy to use and makes the whole process so much easier and more straightforward. The ability to customise was also something that attracted us to Yearbook Machine. In addition to this, the Yearbook Machine team were in constant contact with us about the progress of our yearbook and answering any questions we had, no matter how trivial they were. I can’t imagine how stressful and difficult it would have been to organise my year to complete their pages without the system — it has been invaluable.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND US? Yes! When the yearbooks arrived we were overwhelmed at how professional they looked, they were exactly what we’d asked for and more! Everyone loved them and was so pleased with the much-anticipated final product. Receiving feedback from my peers it seems evident that everyone found the process extremely straightforward in terms of editing their yearbook pages and answering polls and other sections that required their attention. Having received the final product we are amazed at how reasonable the price was considering the excellent quality of all the books. The Yearbook Machine online system and the help of the team have allowed us to create a yearbook that captures the heart of our school and our year. We are so grateful for the hard work and commitment of the Yearbook Machine team in creating a highly treasured book. Yearbook Machine is an extremely recommendable and reliable company, thank you for all you have done.

We are amazed at how reasonable the price was, considering the excellent quality of the books.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YEARBOOK MACHINE? Yearbook Machine provided a simple way to get everything we wanted in the yearbook, with very reasonable prices. We particularly liked that it was easy to add our own custom-designed pages as well as the ones made by Yearbook Machine, as this gave us lots of flexibility and was the best of both worlds.

WHAT WAS GOOD ABOUT YEARBOOK MACHINE? Everyone in the year group enjoyed filling in the yearbook, being able to write on other people’s pages and having the ability to choose what went into their own yearbook page. The ‘Friends Say’ section, which allowed people to collaborate to write answers for other people’s pages, was especially fun. The online system also made being Editor a lot easier as it meant we didn’t have to go and fill in everyone’s page from scrap, yet we could still manage the book overall and choose our own designs for our custom pages. Finally, the styling of the final book was fantastic (far better than we could ever do ourselves!) and the quality of the books and paper is excellent.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND US? Yes we would. Any problems we had were dealt with very swiftly and efficiently. We haven’t had any complaints from our year about the yearbook and many commented on the professional, yet personalized yearbooks. Additionally, the yearbooks were perfect value for money.

The styling of the final book was fantastic ( far better than we could ever do ourselves!) and the quality of the books and paper is excellent. 23

OUR ONLINE SYSTEM Yearbook Machine provides a powerful online system that allows you to manage the whole process of making your yearbook, meaning that you're always in control.

TEST IT OUT FOR FREE:

YEARBOOK.COM 28

HOW IT HELPS:

IT KEEPS YOU ORGANISED The online system keeps your yearbook project on track by sending you automatic reminders and telling you exactly what still needs to be finished in your book.

IT LETS YOU COLLABORATE Because your yearbook is better when everyone can get involved, the Yearbook Machine system lets you collaborate, sharing photos through the online system and writing content for pages together.

YOU CAN IMPORT PHOTOS FROM FACEBOOK Photos are a key part of every yearbook, and Yearbook Machine allows you to connect directly to your Facebook account to import photos for your book. You can also upload an unlimited amount of high-quality images directly to the system.

YOU CAN KEEP TRACK OF PROGRESS Keeping track of who’s done what (and what still needs to be done) is one of key roles of a yearbook Editor. With Yearbook Machine, you can see each person’s progress, so you know who to chase up!

IT’S FUN Because all of the most boring and time-consuming parts of making a yearbook are managed by the software, you're just left with the fun parts of collecting memories and reminiscing with friends.

29

OUR PROCESS How it works: the different stages of making your yearbook, and how long they take.

2. INVITE FRIENDS Time taken: 5 minutes Once your yearbook is set up, it’s time to invite some friends. Yearbook Machine makes it easy by allowing you to invite people by email, through Facebook or by giving a secret keyword to everyone you want to join.

1. SIGN UP Time taken: 5 minutes Sign up for our online system, configure which pages you want in your book and choose the style of your profile pages. It’s completely free to use the system and you can get started immediately.

HOW LONG IN TOTAL? It takes 10 weeks on average from start to delivery, but we have made books in as little as 2 weeks - get in touch if your deadline is tight!

3. INTERACT & CREATE Time taken: 1 - 4 weeks This is where the fun begins! When everyone’s on the system, you can write on each other’s profiles, upload, share and comment on photos and vote in polls. It’s interesting to log in just to see what’s going on, and you’ll find that your yearbook quickly fills up with content.

30

6. PAYMENT, PRINT & DELIVERY Time taken: 1 - 4 weeks Once you’re happy with your book, payment is made and it’s sent to the printers. Payment is usually in advance although we can also accept payment after delivery with a purchase order from a UK school or college. Printing takes up to 4 weeks for hardback books although it can be as little as 1; let us know if you’ve got a tight deadline!

5. DESIGN & CUSTOMISE Time taken: 1 - 5 days When you’ve finished creating your content online, it gets sent to our studio where it is turned into the design for your printed book. We’ll customise it with your school’s logo and colours and send you a proof before printing to make sure you’re 100% happy.

4. CHECK & SUBMIT Time taken: 1 - 5 days Most of our customers generate so much content during their time online that they need to refine it down to fit in the space available. This is great as it means that only the best stuff gets in, and most of the pages of the book will be full. It’s at this stage that teachers and editors should look over the content to make sure it’s all OK to print.

DANGER! Make sure everything is not left until the last minute. If you’re not careful there could be a mad rush, and pages may not be submitted on time. Avoid this stress if you can!

31

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT As a yearbook editor, your job will be much easier if you plan ahead. Here are a few tips:

1

COMMITTEE AND TEAM Managing people is the biggest task in any yearbook project. It relies on you coordinating up to 100+ people who might want to be doing something different instead. Forming a yearbook committee will make a difference, as it means more people will then be pushing the project. You can delegate tasks to different individuals, for example the school music captain can be in charge of the music section. Remember though, it’s still important that somebody is in charge, talking to the school and Yearbook Machine when necessary.

2

TIMING You should make a clear plan for what needs to be done, working back from when you want the book to be delivered. Don’t leave everything until the last minute - when exams come about during the summer it can be hard to keep the momentum going. Allow more time than you expect because people are often late with their contributions!

32

3 MONEY It’s essential that you budget correctly from the start. If you have a price in mind talk to Yearbook Machine and we can tailor a quote to your needs. Ask your school to help as well. They tend to be helpful when it comes to coordinating billing. Sometimes schools are even able to subsidise the book.

4 CONTENT If possible, try to plan out which pages you want in your book in advance: this will help you by letting you tick the items off the list as you make them. When you’ve finished online, make sure you double-check for spelling mistakes or errors. You should also show a teacher, in case the book includes any inappropriate content and to get your school’s approval. Remember that your school holds the rights to its name and crest and if you’re using any of the two you need their permission to print!

5 PHOTOGRAPHY Having the help of somebody who’s good with a camera will make a difference if you want to include lots of large images in your yearbook. If you want everybody’s profile photos to look consistent (e.g. with a plain background) then you will need to arrange for those photos to be taken. Similarly, if you want a photo of your whole year group then remember to arrange it.

45

PROFILE PAGES Profiles are pages of photos and text about each of the individuals in your book.

EVERY PAGE IS UNIQUE Using exactly the same template on every page can get repetitive and boring. We vary the layouts subtly from page to page, to give your book a more naturallydesigned look.

ROOM TO EXPRESS YOURSELF The Yearbook Machine online system is so fun to use that it’s not uncommon for people to generate more content for their profile than can be fit onto one page. Fortunately, we offer all of our designs in sizes up to two pages per profile, so everything you want to say can be in your book. 46

THREE DIFFERENT WAYS TO FILL YOUR PAGE Fill your profile page with answers written by you, with answers written by your friends, with comments from friends, or with a combination of all three. Because there are so many ways to fill your page, everyone can have a full profile page, even if they don’t like writing about themselves.

YOUR CREST AND COLOURS ADDED TO EACH PAGE Because Yearbook Machine’s designers custom-finish each book, we can make your profiles fit your choice of colour scheme, and can even add your school’s logo or crest in many designs. 47

Classic

The original and still the most popular of all of Yearbook Machine’s styles. Classic is well-proportioned and timeless, and its simple elegance is guaranteed to look good long in to the future.

Feeling very concerned, Graham hit a live hand grenade, thinking it would make him feel better (but as usual, it did not). Heart filled with earnest fortitude, he realized that his beloved Yearbook was missing! Immediately he called his favorite Mormon, Barry Frost. Graham had known Barry Frost for (plus or minus) 550,000 years, the majority of which were eccentric ones. Barry Frost was unique. He was easygoing though sometimes a little... stubborn. Graham called him anyway, for the situation was urgent.

Barry Frost picked up to a very glad Graham. Barry Frost calmly assured him that most

Why was Barry Frost trying to distract Graham? Because he had snuck out from Graham Strickland’s with the Yearbook only six days prior. It was a enticing little Yearbook... how could he resist? It didn’t take long before Graham Strickland got back to the subject at hand: his Yearbook. Barry Frost yawned. Relunctantly, Barry Frost invited him over, assuring him they’d find the Yearbook. Graham Strickland grabbed his canoe and disembarked immediately. After hanging up the phone, Barry Frost realized that he was in trouble. He had to find a place to hide the Yearbook and he

had to do it fearlessly. He figured that if Graham took the amphibious vehicle, he had take at least ten minutes before Graham Strickland would get there. But if he took the Yearbook Machine? Then Barry would be abundantly done.

t all started when our hyphen-happy protagonist, Vladimir, woke up in a bush. It was the eighth time it had happened. Feeling very concerned, Vladimir hit a live hand grenade, thinking it would make him feel better (but as usual, it did not). Heart filled with earnest fortitude, he realized that his beloved Yearbook was missing! Immediately he called his favorite Mormon, Tom. Vladimir had known Tom for (plus or minus) 550,000 years, the majority of which were eccentric ones. Tom was unique. He was easygoing though sometimes a little... stubborn. Vladimir called him anyway, for the situation was urgent. Tom picked up to a very glad Vladimir. Tom calmly assured him that most spotted wolf hamsters yawn before mating, yet albino cats usually indiscriminately grimace *after* mating. He had no idea what that meant; he was only concerned with distracting Vladimir. Why was Tom trying to distract Vladimir? Be104

cause he had snuck out from Vladimir’s with the Yearbook only six days prior. It was a enticing little Yearbook... how could he resist? It didn’t take long before Vladimir got back to the subject at hand: his Yearbook. Tom yawned. Relunctantly, Tom invited him over, assuring him they’d find the Yearbook. Vladimir grabbed his canoe and disembarked immediately. After hanging up the phone, Tom realized that he was in trouble. He had to find a place to hide the Yearbook and he had to do it fearlessly. He figured that if Vladimir took the amphibious vehicle, he had take at

least ten minutes before Vladimir would get there. But if he took the Yearbook Machine? Then Tom would be abundantly screwed. Before he could come up with any reasonable ideas, Tom was interrupted by eleven stupid marmots that were lured by his Yearbook. Tom yawned; ‘Not again’, he thought. Feeling worried, he skillfully reached for his banana and carefully stroked every last one of them. Apparently this was an adequate deterrent--the discouraged critters began to scurry back toward the haunted thicket, squealing with discontent. He exhaled with relief. That’s

when he heard the Yearbook Machine rolling up. It was Vladimir. As he pulled up, he felt a sense of urgency. He had had to make an unscheduled stop at Seven-Eleven to pick up a 12-pack of live hand grenades, so he knew he was running late. With a hasty leap, Vladimir was out of the Yearbook Machine and went explosively jaunting toward Tom’s front door. Meanwhile inside, Tom was panicking. Not thinking, he tossed the Yearbook into a box of dangerous oil-soaked rags and then slid the box behind his time machine. Tom was angered but at least the Yearbook was concealed. The doorbell rang. ‘Come in,’ Tom wildly purred. With a apt push, Vladimir opened the door. ‘Sorry for being late, but I was being chased by some

abrasive self-righteous ass in a time machine,’ he lied. ‘It’s fine,’ Tom assured him. Vladimir took a seat mysteriously distant from where Tom had hidden the Yearbook. Tom sighed trying unsuccessfully to hide his nervousness. ‘Uhh, can I get you anything?’ he blurted. But Vladimir was distracted. A few freaknasty minutes later, Tom noticed a funnysmelling look on Vladimir’s face. Vladimir slowly opened his mouth to speak. ‘...What’s that smell?’ Tom felt a stabbing pain in his taint when Vladimir asked this. In a moment of disbelief, he turned to notice a box that seemed clearly out of place. ‘Th-th-those are just my grandma’s dull pencils from when she used to have pet spotted wolf hamsters. She, uh...dropped ‘em by here earlier’. 105

MONTAGE PAGES Montages are pages of your photos fitted to professionally-designed layouts.

INSTANT PAGE LAYOUT Make great-looking montage pages in one minute or less Once your photos are added to the online system, laying them out as a montage page is magically quick. Just select a template, pick photos and crop to fit. You can then instantly see how the page will look in your printed book.

POWERFUL PHOTO TOOLS Import from Facebook, apply effects and more. Yearbook Machine was built for dealing with thousands of photos per book. Each person can import them straight from their Facebook profile and have them instantly indexed for use in the system. You can also rotate photos and add effects, and the system gives automatic warnings about whether photos are of good enough quality to print. 106

ADD CAPTIONS Many templates also have optional photo captions A picture may be worth a thousand words, but sometimes it’s good to say something too. Most of Yearbook Machine’s montage templates have spaces for optional photo captions, so you can add a witty quip as a reminder of exactly what happened.

SEVEN STYLES, HUNDREDS OF TEMPLATES No two pages have to be the same Each montage can have between 2 and 12 photos on it, and there are multiple layouts for each number of photos, so your book’s layout can stay interesting and varied throughout. 107

MONTAGE PAGE STYLES There are seven Montage page styles to choose from. You can select Montage styles that match your Profile and Article pages, or you can mix things up with different styles.

POLLS / AWARDS Set online polls and include the results in your book as stylish custom charts.

EASY AS PIE (CHARTS) Adding polls takes seconds Set up polls in seconds - set the choices as all users in your book, all male users, all female users or a custom vote on anything you like.

GETS EVERYONE INVOLVED Polls make your book fun and inclusive One of the best parts of Polls is their ability to get everyone in your group involved and talking about your yearbook. Because it’s so easy to join in, setting up polls is a great way to get people started in your book.

114

INCLUDE PHOTOS Select a photo of the winner of each poll to print with the results When you select which polls to print, you can also select a suitable photo to include. So if you hope to win ‘Most Likely To Be Prime Minister’, make sure to dress smartly!

115

PHOTO PAGES Include stunning full-page photo spreads to take advantage of Yearbook Machine’s outstanding print quality

FULL-COLOUR, BORDERLESS PRINTING Print up to the page edge for maximum impact We allow you to print in full colour right up to the page edge, so you can include as much of your photos as possible.

FREE PHOTO FILLER PAGES Free pages to make your book look better Because each section in your book has to have an even number of pages to keep the structure of your book intact, if a section has an odd number of pages, we’ll include a single-page photo ‘filler’ at the end of it free of charge.

116

SINGLE PAGE OR FULL SPREAD Make an impact with huge double-page photo spreads If you have a high quality image that you want to show off in the best way possible, we allow you to print it across two whole pages, so everything in it will be crisp and clear in print forever.

CUSTOMISED TO YOU Our designers add your crest and colours As in all pages of your yearbook, our designers will add your crest and school colours to your Dividers where possible, to make your book really customised to you. You can also choose to have a different colour for each divider for a more varied effect.

INDEX / CONTACTS Maintain an easy reference to each person’s page number and contact details

CUSTOMISED TO YOU Like all pages of your book, your index is customised to you The devil may be in the details, but we don’t shy away from getting them right. We customise every page to your school or college, and the index is no exception.

CONTACTS / ADDRESS BOOK Stay in touch, with everyone’s contact details all in one place You can include any of the details from individual profile pages in the index, compiled together in alphabetical order to make it easy to find what you’re looking for.

128

EASY PAGE REFERENCE Find what you’re looking for. It might sound simple, but having an index in your yearbook can make the difference between minutes and seconds when you’re looking for something in your book. So, with an index, you can spend more time reading your book, and less time searching.

129

NOTES The perfect place for handwritten messages from friends

INCLUDED AS STANDARD Three notes pages are included as standard in all books We include three Notes pages as standard in all our books, as part of the 10 standard pages included in your base price.

130

WATERMARK CREST Your school’s logo or crest as a background watermark Although Notes pages are meant to be written on, we can still customise them to your school by adding a faint ‘watermark’ of your crest or logo in the background.

131

SELF-DESIGNED PAGES You can also easily add your own page designs to your book.

GREAT FOR SPONSOR ADS Reduce the cost of your books by getting sponsors Many groups choose to reduce the cost of their yearbooks for each individual by selling one or more pages of messages from sponsors, such as school alumni associations, local businesses and future employers.

132

A BLANK CANVAS The only limit is your imagination If you want to include a page that doesn’t fall into one of the other nine page categories, it’s not a problem. Upload your page as JPG or PDF and we’ll include it in your book where you choose.

133

134

135

EXTRAS

RIBBON MARKER Available in a wide range of colours, Ribbon Markers give your book a classic touch and help you keep your position when reading.

136

PRINTED ENDPAPERS Printed endpapers are large pages printed with a photo, design or pattern of your choice, bound inside the front or back cover of your book. They’re particularly good for high-quality photographs such as class photos as they are made from one unbroken sheet and don’t have a spine in the middle.

PHOTO DVD Although you can fit hundreds of photos in your printed yearbook, it’s not unusual for groups using our online system to collect thousands of photos in their library. We can burn all of the photos uploaded online onto one DVD and include it in a sleeve at the back of each person’s yearbook.
