Quality jewellery supp with over 600 years of

plies, delivered experience

Betts Christmas message Our family business has been operating in the Jewellery Quarter since the dawn of the industrial revolution in 1760. With over 250 years of experience in precious metals, the business is now managed by the ninth consecutive generation of the Betts family, but it still remains a proudly British family owned business. Excellent quality and customer service are the cornerstones of our business, and we believe our wealth of experience helps us to create long-lasting and mutually beneficial partnerships with our customers. We would like to thank all our customers for their business in 2011 and we wish everyone a very happy christmas and a prosperous new year!

attract around 40 people - except of course the last two breakfasts of 2011 which attracted nearly 60 people. Although some people are asking for the Breakfasts to move around to different venues and some restaurants are offering their venues, we don’t think that any other venue could cope with 60 people turning up instead of an anticipated number of 40 and still provide a Breakfast for everyone quickly and efficiently. Although we do ask people to book in there are still some who book in and don’t turn up and those who turn up without booking in. Well done, Rope Walk - we will be back in 2012. If anyone wants to put on a Breakfast at a particular venue, then this can of course be considered. Also at this point a special Thank You to Doug Timmis who travels from Coventry to take the roll-call at every Breakfast. You must be a member to come to the JQA Breakfasts. JQA Breakfast

Yes, we managed some Christmas Lights - and how good they look. The President, Chairman, and all Directors of The Jewellery Quarter Association wish all members and colleagues A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Thank you everyone who has supported us during this past year - there is still lots to do. We have at least five breakfasts planned so if you want to make a presentation, or have an idea for something you would like to know about, please contact Marie. The cost to make a presentation is £250.00 which of course covers administration costs, hire of the room and food. We usually

The final JQA Breakfast of 2011, held on 8th December at The Rope Walk was well attended, in fact 40 booked in and nearly 60 attended. Great! The Lord Mayor was in attendance and said how much she always enjoys her visits to The Jewellery Quarter. There was a very interesting presentation by Elizabeth Perkins of The Birmingham Conservation Trust on ‘The Coffin Works’. As a ‘special treat’ ten singers from the Jewellery Quarter’s own choir - the Icknield Male Voice Choir sang beautifully several Christmas carols.

Marie then took the opportunity to advise everyone about the sad death of Ron (Smudge) Smith, and to bring everyone up to date regarding the Dayus Square and the special piece of

Web site: email: Follow us on Twitter @jqassociation

artwork being prepared commemorating Kathleen Dayus’ life - dueto be unveiled February 2012. She then took advantage of the presence of the Councillor who was the Cabinet Member for Transportation at the time of the consultations on Parking a couple of years ago and other Councillors present, to bring to their attention that agreements made at that time, especially regarding Loading Bays were being completely ignored and immediate action must be taken to put this right. At the time of writing, urgent emails are flying across the Council - let’s hope we see some action on this very urgent matter! This JQA Breakfast was sponsored by the ‘Community Chest’.

Some JQA directors attended this ‘talk shop’ but there was nothing said that hasn’t all been said before, apart from some people who believe that ‘history is a waste of time and what people want is affordable housing’! No mention of affordable offices or workshops. No need to say how the JQA feel about that - Regeneration through Conservation has always been the ‘way to go as far as we are concerned.

It is Christmas in The Quarter

Hurray, we have a Christmas Tree in St Pauls Churchyard! Actually the Quarter looks quite festive. As usual at this time of year York House is inundated with telephone enquiries about what days and what times the shops open up until Christmas - very difficult to answer!

If your company is doing anything ‘special’ for the Olympics please send us some details for inclusion in the Trade Talk. I know some people in the Quarter have been trying to get the Olympic Torch Flame brought through the Quarter (with myself possibly bearing the torch). Nice thought folks, but this has not been made possible.

New Heritage Magazine

Progress is now being made towards the launch of this brand new magazine being published at York House. It will be named ‘ The Historic Jewellery Quarter’. The main aim of the magazine is to attract more visitors to the Quarter and to put into print many hundreds of stories etc before they are lost forever. The contents will not only include history items but present and future happenings in the Quarter and before and after photographs. Our book ‘Jewellery Quarter Guide’ is almost sold out and during the 20 or so years since its publication, we have amassed a great number of fascinating facts and stories about the area, most of which have never been printed - far too many to put into one book. The magazine will be quarterly and will be available on subscription and on sale at venues. The audience envisaged is the wider public and will in no interfere with The Hockley Flyer which is a Trade Magazine. Letters will be posted out shortly to would-be advertisers and/or sellers. A good friend of the Jewellery Quarter Anna Gibson will be joining the team producing this brand new magazine.

Dayus Square (Albion Street)

The improvements to this area are almost complete and normal traffic resumed. The main purpose of this Square is to commemorate the life of Kathleen Dayus - ‘The Girl From Hockley’ (author ‘All my Days’ etc).

Ron (Smudge) Smith - ‘The Boy from Hockley’.

Many of you will remember Smudge, his humour, writings and pictures of Hockley - it was with great sadness that I heard he had passed away and we are including within these pages a special tribute to him. If Kathleen Dayus is dubbed ‘The Girl From Hockley’ then Smudge certainly deserves the title ‘The Boy From Hockley’!

Parking: Please read the item on the JQA page.

It is clear to all that with the ‘return’ of the traffic wardens to the Quarter, there is definitely a lack of communication between the wardens and the Council. Despite very lengthy discussions, both with the original Consultants and the Council, certain agreements were made with regard to the use of loading bays in the Quarter and private cars were to be allowed to load/unload (including visits to bank etc), not just commercial vehicles. News Jack Row Launches Luxury British Fountain Pens Award winning designer and goldsmith, Jack Row, has launched his début collection of luxurious precious metal fountain pens at Harrods, the world’s most prestigious department store. In addition, Jack Row has also secured global availability with Pianki, the USA world class internet luxury retailer, and with luxury writing instruments boutique La Couronne du Comte of the Netherlands. The ‘Architect’ Collection of fountain pens and cufflinks are individually hand crafted in solid silver and gold and set with accents of precious sapphires and diamonds. Design inspiration is drawn from iconic British architecture, most notably one of London’s most famous landmarks, the ‘Gherkin’. The iconic profile and geometric spirals are reflected in the pen’s elaborate silver and gold filigree. The design prototype, originally developed whilst studying at Birmingham’s famous School of Jewellery, won Jack Row a gold medal prize, awarded by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. Regarding his design philosophy, Jack commented: “I wanted to create a collection of functional items that could be valued as much as objets d’art as fine jewellery or writing instruments. I hope they will appeal to discerning, design conscious individuals and collectors who wish to invest in exclusive British design and craftsmanship.” Harrods’ interest in supporting the twenty-five-year-old designer was initiated when he presented them with his initial prototype. “Jack’s fabulous collection is luxurious, eccentric and quintessentially British, aligning perfectly with the unforgettable Harrods’ experience.” commented Darren Walker, Gifts and Stationery Buyer at Harrods. The materials utilized in the

hand crafting of Jack’s pieces also undoubtedly makes them a sound financial investment. During times of recession, investment in traditional commodities such as gold and diamonds sharply increases. The Jack Row ‘Architect’ Collection includes three variations of limited edition fountain pens: solid sterling silver with black diamonds, solid 18ct yellow gold with sapphires, and the ultimate in luxury, solid 18ct white gold set with nearly a whole carat of diamonds. Each pen also features a solid 18ct gold nib. These exclusive writing instruments are also complimented by a choice of precious cufflinks. Each piece is individually made to order by Jack Row in his studio based in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter. The young designer uses a combination of traditional goldsmithing skills and cutting edge technology to create his intricate works of art. Every design also carries a British hallmark, struck by the Birmingham Assay office, guaranteeing the purity of the precious metals. And the question that you are longing to ask - how much does one of these pens or pair of cufflinks cost? The most affordable cufflinks are

priced at around £3,500 and the top of the range 18ct gold and diamond pen prices at around £27,500. The Jack Row ‘Architect’ Collection is available exclusively at Harrods within the UK and can be viewed in the Harrods’ Writing Room located on the lower ground floor of their Knightsbridge store. Outside the UK, the Jack Row ‘Architect’ Collection is also available at (Netherlands) and (USA). About Jack Row: After completing four years of traditional training as a goldsmith, Jack attended the School of Jewellery (Birmingham City University), one of the most famous institutions of its kind in the world, based in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter. Graduating with a first class honours degree in Jewellery and Silverware Design in 2009 he went straight into employment with one of Europe’s leading bespoke jewellery companies, Weston Beamor Ltd. The company encouraged Jack to pursue his own design work and allowed him time and resources to get his ideas off the ground. In 2010, Jack set up his studio in Birmingham and began designing and creating with an emphasis on luxurious and innovative pieces that would showcase British design and craftsmanship. As well as producing his own work, Jack is also a visiting lecturer at the Birmingham School of Jewellery (part of Birmingham City University) where he teaches short courses to both full and part time students.

‘Don’t Forget the Driver!’ While it is the season to be jolly, Bitters ’n Twisted Venues are encouraging parties to look after their designated driver this year by providing them with a complimentary soft drink or low-alcohol beer when 4 drinks are purchased together at their venues during December. New Course Buying Scrap Gold & Silver The Birmingham Assay Office is pleased to announce a new course ‘Buying Scrap Gold and Silver’ to add to its existing portfolio of education and training courses. The course will run on Wednesday 18th January 2012 and Wednesday 1st February 2012. Buying Scrap Gold and Silver is a one-day, in-depth course designed for anyone who wishes to engage in buying scrap gold and silver from the public. It covers basic standards to establish trust and best practice, followed by a comprehensive overview of interpreting UK and foreign hallmarks and fineness marks and testing by touch acid and by XRF (X Ray Fluorescence Technique). The day also includes a visit to the Hallmarking and Melting areas within the Assay Office. Delegates will receive an overview of the Hallmarking Act and an explanation of how to recognise and understand Hallmarks (including a hands-on session looking at Hallmarks and identifying them). They will learn how to determine different carats of gold and silver materials by utilising different touch acid solutions, how to analyse gold, silver, platinum and palladium using XRF and will receive an explanation of the melting and fire assay process. Meanwhile for the soft drinkers and designated drivers all of the bars offer a range of fresh fruit juices, carbonated drinks, ‘mocktails’, blended fruit drinks and bottled Becks Blue low-alcohol beer. Matt Scriven Director of Bitters ’n Twisted said “with a host of festive events taking place this time of the year we wanted to make sure all of the designated drivers are well looked after and to do our bit to combat drink driving. With a large range of soft drinks on offer drivers will be spoilt for choice for what to have and best of all it’s on us, call it an early Christmas present.” This offer runs throughout Decemthe course will benefit from the recognised expertise of its tutors, who are both Assay Office staff. Dippal Manchanda is the Chief Assayer and Technical Director at The Birmingham Assay Office. He has over 26 years experience in assaying and the examination of precious metals and alloys. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Sally Hoban is the Heritage & Training Officer at The Birmingham Assay Office. She has an in-depth knowledge of antique silver and jewellery and over 20 years experience in the UK antiques trade. Michael Allchin, Chief Executive, and Assay Master at The Birmingham Assay Office said: “With the market for buying scrap gold and silver so strong at the moment, we recognise that there is a real need for training for those people who wish to buy scrap gold and silver from the public. signs on the loading bay in Frederick Street were ‘changed’ with different wording on each sign three times within two weeks! On my intervention, and being told that the wardens have never received such instructions, assurances have now been made that ‘the use of the loading bays is being monitored’ at the moment to see what the bays are actually being used for. In the meantime If you do get a parking ticket in a loading bay, do contest it - you can use the JQA name as a referral. The JQA are trying to convene a meeting between the JQA, Amey Construction, the Council, Centro, etc. to discuss what is to be done about the disgraceful state of the roads left by Amey after the burning off of yellow lines and the impact on businesses of the new parking scheme! You can email the JQA with any constructive comments to add to the report. It would appear that the Jewellery Quarter is no longer regarded as a special needs area, and are being ‘wardened’ as part of the City Centre, which I have fought against for over 30 years. If you have any comments regarding parking please contact: 0121 303 7616 or email: parking@birmingham. or Brian Palmer at transport Permit applications: 0121 303 7192. Gemvision at Spring Fair International

5-9 February 2012 Hall 18 Stand 18N59 “Jewellers must adapt to new generation of tech savvy customers”, says Gemvision. Gemvision Europe will be demonstrating how the future lies in technology based jewellery retailing at this year’s Spring Fair International’s Jewellery Show. Highlights on Stand 18N59 will include live demonstrations of Gemvision’s newest version CounterSketch Studio 2.6. It offers retailers an easy-to-use bespoke design service in-store - over 2,500 base models to modify - whilst significantly expanding their product range without the overheads of holding stock. In addition, visitors will be able to see demonstrations of the latest version of Gemvision’s Matrix 7 design software. This improves on traditional CAD functionality, giving designers more freedom to create the type of complex organic design shapes which are generally only created by hand. Both technologies set the benchmark for jewellery design software, enabling independent retailers to capitalise on the trend for personalised jewellery. CounterSketch Studio - created by Gemvision in partnership with global jewellery connoisseur Stuller - allows customers to design their own uniquely personalised jewellery, which is then crafted by Stuller. Each one of over 2,500 base models can be modified in 3D to customer preference with an intuitive set of controls, creating an infinite number of possible customised designs. There is live pricing throughout and when the customer approves the design and it goes to Stuller for manufacturing, customers receive their piece in 14 days or less. Matrix 7 offers jewellers all the benefits of a CAD tool designed specifically for the industry, allowing on-screen, dimensionally accurate design and substantially reducing the time taken from initial idea to

final production. Linked with Gemvision’s Revo 540 Milling system or any other prototyping technology, fully representational wax models of the design can be created quickly and economically. “The jewellery industry’s future depends heavily on the adoption of technology,” said Gemvision Europe managing director Gary Baines. “The profile of customers looking to buy engagement rings for example is very different today. They are increasingly technology savvy with online purchasing being second nature. They expect to browse cutting-edge websites for buying ideas and look for computer screens they can interact with in-store. Successful retailers will be the ones who adapt to this new

generation of potential customers and embrace new technology. CounterSketch and Matrix offer retailers that opportunity - with Countersketch, any member of staff can use the software to work with their customers to create a truly unique and personalised piece which can be delivered in just a couple of weeks. “Matrix is an incredibly powerful sales and design tool, enabling the development of stunning dimensionally accurate on-screen designs incorporating the most imaginative and complex shapes, and substantially reducing the time taken from initial idea to final production.”

MM, MEMS & NANO Live 2012 25 – 26 September 2012 NEC, Birmingham, UK

Reflecting on the growing trend toward product miniaturisation across an increasing number of manufacturing sectors, MM LIVE, MEMS LIVE and NANO LIVE have rapidly grown to become one of Europe’s largest annual exhibitions and conferences to focus on micro, precision, nano and MEMS manufacturing technologies. With over 100 market-leading exhibitors and 2,000 visitors in attendance in 2011, the combination of these events provides a genuine one-stop shop for manufacturers for whom innovation can be enabled through micro, nano or MEMS manufacturing technologies. On the back of a successful debut in 2011, the 2012 event will see the ever-growing micro manufacturing

Police Message ‘Welcome to you all from the new Jewellery Quarter Sergeant Matt McVeigh. This is the first of what I hope will be a regular slot in the Hockley Flyer. I do not intend to bore you with statistics, but more to encourage with good news stories, reassure with crime prevention and reduction advice, and perhaps even entertain. By way of introduction I have recently completed 3 1/2 years as the City Centre Retail Team Sergeant and have over ten years experience as a neighbourhood sergeant in retail districts. I hope that I will provide the continuity that the area needs and I can be contacted at Vyse Street Police Station through the usual police number, 0345 1135000, extension 7865 6224 In December there were two incidents that demonstrated the effec-

event MM Live UK co-locate with MEMS Live UK, specifically focusing on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) manufacturing technologies. Often integrated in both MEMS and micro manufacturing, nano manufacturing technologies also have their own dedicated area on the exhibition floor with NANO Live UK. MM LIVE, MEMS LIVE And NANO LIVE draw a wide spectrum of manufacturers from Medical Device, Electronics and telecom products through to aerospace, defence and autosport. Visitors are seeking a variety of solutions from laser micro machining to micro moulding through to design and fabrication, assembly, inspection and test technologies. Continuing our commitment to educating the manufacturing community, the conference and seminar programmes that accompany MM Live UK, MEMS Live UK and NANO Live UK are free to attend and there are no registration fees. Included within these programmes is the increastiveness of the retail radio. Two men palmed two bracelets from a store and made off. Their descriptions were quickly passed over the retail radio link and local neighbourhood officers detained them. The store recovered their goods, valued at over £500 and one offender was charged. A few days before that three males were offering ‘Asian gold’ for sale in the district. The information was relayed over the telephone and due to the delay the males left the area before officers could find them. Had this information been passed over the retail radio it is quite likely that they would have been detained and searched. Aggressive begging has become more prevalent in the area recently and future issues of this nature will be robustly and effectively dealt with. Please pass any relevant information to a member of the policing team.

ingly renowned Micro Manufacturing Conference, which is characterised by high-quality presentations from technology innovators and leading lights from across the globe. This powerful combination of conference and exhibition ensures that the show is an essential part of any engineering and manufacturing organisation’s calendar. Combined, these are “new technology” events that are changing the way manufacturers operate. They are co-located with TCT Live, the leading technology event for new product development and additive manufacturing, Sensing Technology and Mediplas. The shows complement each other well, sharing visitors that represent the cream of manufacturing, typically senior engineers and directors responsible for the production of market-leading brands. Visitors are investors in new technologies and belong to organisations that thrive on innovation and being first to market. The events benefit from the full support of the industry leading publications Commercial Micro Manufacturing and MEMS Technology Review; and from key industry partners including MANCEF, MEMS Industry Group, Yole Development, Nanotechnology KTN, Institute of Nanotechnology, JEMI, AILU, GTMA and BTMA.

Giving to aggressive beggars is not charity but merely encourages their criminality. Please refuse any such approaches and direct your giving into other area. Finally may I wish you all a ‘better 2013’ in these difficult times for all of us and may all our New Year’s resolutions include reducing crime and anti social behaviour in this special and unique part of Birmingham. Historically, the function of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers was to make the very delicate gold and silver wire used in fine embroidery, intricate embellishments, the gold braid and frogging on military uniforms, ecclesiastical robes and royal garments. As a highly skilled hand craft, a wire drawer would produce long lengths of extremely fine wire through a skilful and lengthy process using the finest gold, hammered around a heavy core of silver to reduce its thickness which would then finally be drawn through a ‘drawplate’ on a medieval ‘drawbench’. The ancient technique has been superceded by the use of synthetic materials and the use of machinery and new technology. However, the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers continue to support the creative use of wire particularly through education and grant giving in association with the Royal School of Needlework and through the Company’s grant and bursary scheme.

New Orientation for inhorgenta by 2014 The management of inhorgenta is planning a strong expansion of the trade show in the coming years. As part of this re-orientation, the visual design is to be enhanced and associated more closely with the Munich location. Step by step, the layout and structure of the various exhibition halls will be given a sharper profile and the design of the exhibition space will become more sophisticated, with high-quality lounges and attractive special shows. Another new development: The event is to get a new name: INHORGENTA MUNICH. The dates of the next trade show are February 10 to 13, 2012 in Munich. “Munich is one of the most famous, best loved and most charming cities in the world,” says Renate Wittgenstein, product manager at INHORGENTA MUNICH and one of the driving forces behind the changes being implemented by 2014. “Our goal is to make better use of the excellent image and attractiveness of the city for the trade show, particularly as regards international competition.” Events and PR activities at the exhibition centre and in the city will also be organized to integrate INHORGENTA MUNICH more strongly into the life of the Bavarian capital. The first signs of this upcoming quality campaign will be seen at the fair itself next year. At the West Entrance, trade visitors and exhibitors will be able to enjoy a stylishly revamped INHORGENTA MUNICH Lounge. Plans are also under way for exhibitors to be able to use the Lounge area for their own events. Visual changes will be one outward sign. But on the culinary front, too, the fair will have some treats in store in 2012: Celebrity chef Holger Stromberg, who cooks for the German national football squad and who since last year has been actively involved in both ISPO MUNICH and INHORGENTA MUNICH, will be running the ‘Schlossrestaurant’ and the ‘Buddha Bar’, both specially set up in Hall B2. The range of food and drink goes beyond the standard fare

on offer at many other trade shows, and in doing so echoes in culinary terms the high quality standards of INHORGENTA MUNICH itself. Holger Stromberg will also be organizing the food at another attraction to visitors and exhibitors – the new Howard Hughes Lounge. Suitably this will be located in Hall A1, and styled to match the lifestyle watches on display there. With an appropriate lounge-like design and lots of large-format wall motifs, INHORGENTA MUNICH will be conjuring up the days of this early aviator, film producer and entrepreneur – and of course whetting appetites for the timeless elegance and sporting design of classic pilot´s watches. All of this will be rounded off with the culinary delights on offer in the premium restaurant in Hall B1. In the new-style West Entrance area, a day bar and the INHORGENTA MUNICH Lounge will be welcoming attendees with an appealing visual design and atmosphere. The supporting program to INHORGENTA MUNICH will be redesigned for 2012, and will feature many lectures by selected speakers. For example, high-ranking representatives from the sector will be taking part in a forum that gives jewellers and retailers a glimpse into what the future holds for their business. Among the speakers are Professor Dirk Wolfes (Fashion Future Trends), Nicolas Tscheche from Airbus (Luxury in Commercial Aviation), Björn Theis of Z-Punkt (Evolution of Luxury) and Professor Dr. Fritz Frenkler of the Technical University of Munich who will be speaking about ‘The Future of Industrial Design’. Panel discussions and lectures on other topical themes will complete this exciting supporting programme. “We have developed a whole range of components that in the coming years will make INHORGENTA MUNICH even more attractive to exhibitors and visitors,” says Renate Wittgenstein. Just as ambitious is the mid-term goal the team has set itself: “We want to bring INHORGENTA MUNICH onto a sustainable growth path, to sharpen the profile of the event and the segments, and to clearly position the show in relation to the competition.”

The Boy from Hockley! Ron (Smudge) Smith by Marie Haddleton

Whilst trying to make contact with ‘Smudge’ recently I was very sad to learn that he had passed away. Ron was a very ‘special’ character - an out-and-out Brummie and a very clever and original artist, historian and author. It only seems a short while ago when Ron, Kathleen Dayus and myself formed a trio of ‘oldies’ who often met up and shared book launches and gave ‘talks’. You always knew that it was going to be fun with Ron and Kath along and I feel I have ‘lost’ two good friends. Ron’s sense of humour was such that when crowned ‘Queen of The Jewellery Quarter’ Ron drew a sketch of me sat on a throne - but not quite the kind of throne one might expect! This Foreword to one of Ron’s

books ‘An Overflow from Hockley Brook’ was written by one of his close friend Mac Joseph and sums up his personality: ‘I have known Ron for several years and this is his ‘hat-trick’ of books. It is a great honour for me to be asked to write this foreword for a very dear friend who has helped me over the past few years. Ron, affectionately known as ‘Smudge’ has given great pleasure to many, many Brummies, and adopted Brummies, with his entertaining talks, books and paintings depicting the suburbs of old Birmingham. Ron shares his memories of sad and happy times of his life in Birmingham through the words and paintings in this book and I am sure many people will reflect on these memories and say “Yes, that happened to me” or “yes, I remember that”. I feel privileged to know Ron and Edythe .......”Ron always referred to his wife Edythe as ‘Cuddles’. Ron often broke into ‘brummagen’ in his books and the beginning of this particular book is a prime example: “Cum-on-son”. It was my dad shaking my shoulder gently and whispering softly, presumably so that he wouldn’t waken the other members of

the family. “Yo’ll ‘ave to gerrup now if yome gunna get ta ya’ nu job on time, so cum on now, I’ll gu down fust an’ mek yarra cuppa tea, w’ile yo’ getcha self dressed, an’ don’ mek a noise or yo’ll werken the othas, oright son?” “A-r-r-right dad, o wunt mek a noise” ............ The last few words written by Ron in ‘An Overflow from Hockley Brook’ were: ‘I’m flowing like a river to see what’s out there in the world for me, in fact. I’m overflowing from Hockley Brook into a far bigger Brook.’ A fitting epitaph ...... This was Ron’s signature - his paintings always included a dog?????. Mozafarian Party Provides Perfect Platform for Vendorafa

A prestigious, invitation-only party at London’s contemporary five- star, Grange Hotel St Pauls, provided a perfect showcase recently for the luxury jewellery brand, Vendorafa. The party, which took place on the evening of 19th November, 2011 was hosted by the Knightsbridge jeweller Mozafarian, one of the first UK retailers to stock the Vendorafa brand which is being distributed in the UK by Advalorem, part of the WB Creative Jewellery Group. Some seventy guests were treated to champagne and canapés and given the chance to view and to try on jewels from the Vendorafa range in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere whilst also admiring paintings of The Venice Carnival by the acclaimed artist Lynne

Jewellery from Mozafarian’s own collection and a number of other key brands was also on display. “The star of the show was definitely the Dune Collection,” says Advalorem’s business development manager, Ben Williams. “Everyone seemed to love its tactile quality. The larger statement pieces, particularly the cuffs and bangles, were extremely popular.” Miss Bahareh Mozafarian, who hosted the event, was also delighted with the evening. “These events give us the opportunity to entertain our customers and to spend time getting to know them better. We were very pleased that Vendorafa could join us on this occasion. The feedback from our customers was excellent and I have no doubt that the evening is an indicator of things to come with Vendorafa,” she commented.

3 GREAT BOOKS ON SALE AT YBA PUBLICATIONS Around Hockley by Ted Rudge & John Houghton ‘When Hockley was in the old Manor of Birmingham it was the largest district with clearly defined boundaries. Today the boundaries around this inner city district, part of the massive conurbation Birmingham became, are indistinct to many who lived or live within. The world renowned Jewellery Quarter and St Pauls Church have long been established in Hockley and still provide a major contribution to the workforce and the district’s history. This fascinating selection of more than 180 photographs traces some of the many ways in which Hockley has changed and developed over the last century. It costs £14.99 + £1.23 P+P Hockley by David Harvey. This fascinating collection of photographs, including many rare and old images (some from as early as 1865) explores Hockley over the past century and a half, and details the social, architectural and functional changes in the area. With sections on industry, transport, leisure and religion, all aspects of everyday life are covered. This volume provides a unique insight into life in the town as it used to be. This book will be a nostalgic journey for older residents and a revelation to newcomers to the area. It costs £12.99 + £1.23 P&P The Jewellery Quarter History and Guide 2nd edition has over 150 photographs, many of which are unique, and has 148 pages packed with the history of the Jewellery Quarter, and makes an ideal gift for anyone who has memories of the Jewellery Quarter, or for those keen on the development of the area. It costs £3.50 + 92p P&P
