Welcome

to the latest issue of The Hockley Flyer

t @hockleyflyer f www.facebook.com/thehockleyflyer

If you attended either event at the BAJ’s award winners at Final Show either in London or Birmingham last month, and then read The August Hockley Flyer, you could be forgiven for thinking you might have had one too many glasses of wine at either, or both events. Apologies but gremlins got into the works and the photos from both events got swapped, or rather from one event and the other was omitted altogether.

Deadline 25th of month preceding cover date.

In this issue we print both stories with the right pictures, to set things right and to prove you are not going mad! I blame the heat-wave when that issue was been put together!

Wonder if a similar thing could be organised for our local Jewellery Trade Shows, and the Jewellery Quarter Museums?

Trade Talk

Trade Talk from around the Jewellery Quarter and more.

An announcement from the four Assay Offices of the United Kingdom: On 8th September, Buckingham Palace announced the very sad news of the passing of our longreigning monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As a mark of respect, the Platinum Jubilee commemorative mark will now be withdrawn from use by the four Assay Offices of the United Kingdom. Any items that have already been submitted or pre-scheduled for marking with the Platinum Jubilee

Countdown to deadline for Hallmarking and Learning Online (HALO) applications

The British Hallmarking Council (BHC) and National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) are calling for any final entries to the inaugural HALO Award. Applications close on 16th September and will be assessed by a prestigious line up of judges in October. The current relevance and importance of promoting hallmarking is reflected in the broad spectrum of professionals who have agreed to consider the applications and select the worthy winner of the HALO Award in 2022. The judging panel is composed of experts involved with Hallmarking from a variety of disciplines. Graeme Smith, the Queen’s Assay Master, is responsible for ensuring assaying and hallmarking are carried out consistently across the four Assay Offices, within the requirements of

mark will be processed as promised, but with immediate effect, no further new submissions for the commemorative mark will be accepted. The commemorative mark was originally planned to be applied until the end of Her Majesty’s platinum Jubilee year in December 2022. the Hallmarking Act. Joanna Hardy, Trade Warden for the Goldsmiths’ Company Court of Wardens, is a well-known jewellery expert, who regularly appears on the Antiques Road Show and shares her wide experience via her online jewellery academy. Ken Daly, National Coordinator for the S c o t t i s h Tra d i n g Standards Service and Rachael Taylor, a highly respected jewellery journalist, observe hallmarking awareness and promotion from a different angle. Long ser ving Shef field Assay Master Ashley Carson brings the views of an Assay Office to the table. The panel is completed by Heather Callaway, Registered Valuer, and current Chair of the National Association of Jewellers. Graeme Smith says of the judging process; “I am looking forward to seeing the entries and visiting the entrants’ websites to see how creative and innovative they have been in delivering a simple, informative message about hallmarking. Our rigorous independent UK system is

nearly 700 years old, and it is easy to take it for granted and overlook its benefits. The HALO initiative seeks to remind jewellers that in a global online market, where an independent hallmark is unusual and value is confused by branding, the reassurance of a UK hallmark is more important than ever. “The system is intended to protect both the Trade and the Consumer, but its effectiveness relies upon the consumer knowing they need to check if an item is hallmarked. They will only do that if the trade educates them that it should be there.” Judges will be looking for easy to find, simple information about hallmarks at the relevant point of an online sale. This will vary significantly as what may be appropriate for the extensive site of a multiple retailer could be very different from that of a designer maker. In this inaugural year there are no separate categories for entries and all fine jewellers are invited to enter, regardless of whether they are members of the NAJ. The HALO Award winner will be announced at the Benevolent Society Ball in December. The winner will be

the holder of a prestigious silver salver for the year and will also benefit from PR directed at both Trade and Consumer Press. The biggest, long-term benefit will be that their customers can buy confidently, reassured that precious metal items are what they purport to be because they are hallmarked.

Hockley Mint Unveils New You & I® Bridal Jewellery Collection and Brochure

British casting specialist and fine jewellery supplier, Hockley Mint, has announced the launch of its new You & I® collection that celebrates the past, present, and future of the British bridal and wedding day jewellery market for diverse and modern couples. The 52-piece collection includes single stone, three stone, five stone and seven stone engagement and eternity rings for women, alongside a small selection of engagement rings and signet rings for men. These are accompanied by matching pendants and earrings that are ideally suited to the wedding day jewellery market. Within the new offering are revitalised designs from the Hockley Mint archive of jewellery masters, refreshed best-sellers that continue

to perform, and new pieces that retailers will not have seen before. Highlights include the new Infinity engagement ring with a diamond-set infinity motif built into the side profile, a reimagined vintage seven-stone marquise-shaped diamond ring, and a traditional cluster engagement ring that can be customised with the retailers’ choice of diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds, and coloured gemstones. Kevan Jenkinson, Sales Director at Hockley Mint, says: “The purpose of the You & I® collection is to take retailers on a journey through Hockley Mint’s 70 years in business. We have reworked vintage designs, updated our current and most popular best-sellers, and added new lines that reflect the 21st century bridal market. With this new collection, we hope to provide our retail partners with the diverse ranges they need to offer an inclusive and supportive shopping experience.” The You & I® collection was designed and developed at Hockley Mint’s facilities in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Pieces are to be manufactured on-site in all precious metals, including Fairtrade Gold, and set with the retailer’s choice of natu-

ral diamonds, coloured gemstones, and laboratory-grown diamonds in a range of fancy cuts, qualities,

and carat weights. Customers can choose from unset and pre-set pieces to be finished in their own workshops or fully finished creations that are ready to be placed in Christmas counters and window displays. Alongside this significant new launch, Hockley Mint has also announced that a new version of its popular brochure will be available to customers in the autumn of 2022. Having secured feedback from its retail partners, the brochure now boasts a refreshed design, easier navigation, more striking visuals, and a closer look at the suppliers’ latest lifestyle imagery, which includes a diverse range of couples to reflect the contemporary bridal jewellery market. You & I® campaign and lifestyle imagery will be available to Hockley Mint customers in the form of highres photographs for social media and point-of-sale displays. Images were professionally developed to show a more inclusive cross-section of couples and to support retailers in attracting their local customers more effectively. Jenkinson adds: “This is the first time the Hockley Mint product brochure has been overhauled since the pandemic, and it really demonstrates our huge commitment to our customers and making their lives easier. The changes that have been made to the brochure’s layout and design will allow our retail partners to quickly and efficiently build capsule collections that cut down on lead times and have the ‘Created in the UK’ guarantee. We are presenting both You & I® and this new brochure just in time for Christmas as we predict a successful ‘Golden Quarter’.”

A tax avoidance promoter based in The Shard has been exposed by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) with users warned to withdraw or risk large tax bills. ContractorCare Ltd was recently named by HMRC as a tax avoidance promoter, along with PAYEme Ltd, and Gateway Outsource Solutions Ltd. Customers are being urged to withdraw from the published schemes and contact HMRC as soon as possible. This latest publication of tax avoidance schemes and their promoters comes after tax avoidance promoter Hyrax Resourcing Ltd was handed a £1million fine after a legal challenge by HMRC, for failing to disclose to the tax authority the details of the tax avoidance scheme they promoted. Mary Aiston, Director of Counter Avoidance, HMRC, said: “Tax avoidance schemes are advertised as clever ways to pay less tax but in reality, they rarely work as the promoters promise. That’s why we’re regularly exposing the details of tax avoidance schemes and their

promoters, to not only help customers steer clear of them, but also to disrupt the tax avoidance market and drive scheme promoters out of business. “Anyone who thinks they may be involved in a tax avoidance scheme, or have been approached by a scheme promoter, should contact us as soon as possible to get help.”

The sudden death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been a shock to all of us. On the day of her death, along with the other Assay Offices, they determined that the additional celebratory jubilee mark should be withdrawn as a mark of respect coincident with the commencement of a period of national mourning. Since that time, the Assay Offices have continued to monitor the situation, cognizant of the ground swell of emotion from the public. Following intra office discussions, the UK Assay Offices have agreed the following statement: “Over the course of the last week the four Assay Offices of the UK have received a huge number of requests from the trade and the public in support of continuing the application of the Platinum Jubilee commemorative mark.

After consultation with the King’s Assay Master, the four Assay Offices of the UK are pleased to announce that from Tuesday 20th of September the Platinum Jubilee Mark will be made available again. The mark will remain available until the end of 2022, as originally scheduled.” (See page 18). September 2022

and Emma Burgin. Antonia SpeareCole won Gold, along with £500, Duke Birt won Silver and £300, and Chiara Cossu won Bronze and £200. BAJ collaborated with London-based jeweller Alex Monroe on a live project in 2021. Zak Bouaguel was awarded the Maitland Woodall-Mason Award for Most Improved Student and a place on a jewellery making short course. Finally, Alexi Hunt was presented with the BAJ Rising Star Award, which was judged by BAJ graduate and GC&DC Award winner Clio Saskia and Aidan Bateman and had a prize of £150 in Walsh vouchers and a book on diamonds. Attended by BAJ staff and students as well as key jewellery sector figures, the opening night of BAJ’s Final Show 2022 in London was an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the work of the Academy’s talented community to the industry. The exhibition was also open to the public from July 29 to 30, providing an opportunity to get inspired and see the high level of work students at BAJ produce. “At BAJ we believe in celebrating our students’ achievements at every level of their education,” said BAJ Principal Sharjeel Nawaz. “Our students excelled at this opportunity to showcase their work to top professionals in the jewellery sector. I could not be more proud of the recognition which they received from the best of the industry.” “I am so impressed with

our learners this year and am incredibly proud to showcase the talent that the dedicated BAJ tutors and support teams have helped to nurture over the last year,” said BAJ Head of Academy Kate Rieppel. “It is a great privilege to observe up-and-coming craftspeople and designers and be able to usher them into the jewellery industry. It is also a delight to welcome more and more industry professionals each year to support our learners on their journeys. I can’t wait to see what next year brings!” “It feels amazing,” said Zak Bouaguel on winning an award. “I really didn’t expect it. I was right up at the front, so when I heard “I don’t know how I’m going to pronounce this name” I got that little flash in my head thinking wow, it really could be me, and then I heard my name, and it was amazing!” BAJ also held a Final Show 2022 exhibition at its Birmingham campus, located in the Birmingham Assay Office in the city’s Jewellery Quarter, on August 2. The event also featured several awards which gave students an opportunity to forge links with the city’s vibrant jewellery industry. The exhibition was open to the public 3rd to the 9th of August.

Birmingham welcomes The World Reimagined trail

Birmingham heritage and shared history will be explored through a trail of giant globes that was launched in the city centre on 12 August 2022. The World Reimagined – which is supported by Birmingham City Council - aims to explore the city’s history - in particular, its links with the trans-Atlantic Trade of Enslaved Africans - by bringing to life the reality and its impact by remembering the past and celebrating the spirt and culture that survived. The trail was launched in St Philip’s

towns and cities by funding efforts to clean up streets. Cllr Majid Mahmood, Cabinet M e m b e r f o r E n v i ro n m e n t a t Birmingham City Council, said: “Securing funding from the Chewing Gum Taskforce is a huge boost, and we look forward to implementing the new measures that will not only clean gum from our streets, but also help to prevent it being littered in the first place. “We know how important cleaner s t re e t s a re t o t h e p e o p l e o f Birmingham – and this scheme is part of our ongoing commitment to achieve that. Long-term, the Task Force will continue to monitor gum litter levels and measure the impact their efforts have on our streets Square where the sculptures Dear Archives by Glory Samjolly and Unity by Gabriel Choto were unveiled. Each of the 10 globes have been designed by an individual artist based on themes including Mother Africa, Still We Rise and Expanding Soul. Cllr John Cotton, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities for Birmingham City Council, said: “We are delighted to welcome this national and internationally significant project to Birmingham, which will not only encourage a greater awareness and conversations around racial injustice – but also to provide a visual spectacle which will inspire people across the city. “I would like to thank The World Reimagined team as well as all the stakeholders and funders for their commitment to this project, which is vital to achieving a better under-

standing of our city’s history.” The globes have been decorated by artists from Birmingham and across the UK, bringing the city to life with diverse experiences and creative styles. They include local artists Create Not Destroy, Kassessa Gandara, Gayani, Ariyaratne, Pauline Bailey, and Jay Percy, alongside Donna Newman, Tamika Galanis, Gabriel Choto, and Jess Perrin. A tenth globe – created by artist Create Not Destroy – was inspired by collaboration with local communities. A map detailing where these globes can be found is hosted on The World Reimagined website. Artist Gabriel Choto, whose globe is called Unity, said: “It’s been so great to be a part of this project and I look forward to the people of Birmingham experiencing and engaging with my globe, Unity. It’s been a really special moment and I hope everyone takes away something positive, enriching, and educational from these trails. “It’s been wonderful to work alongside the other nine artists who also have their globes in Birmingham. A real moment for us to come together. Schools have also been involved with this project, with 10 small globes being featured on the trail created by schools who have taken part in The World Reimagined learning programme.” Birmingham’s The World Reimagined trail coincides with six other trails in Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool City Region, London, and Swansea, which all aim to inspire and galvanise communities to better understand what it means to be Black and British. All city trails will be on display from 13 August to 31 October 2022. Local organisations have also been keen to make a commitment to racial justice, the arts and education in Birmingham with Cass Art, GE, HUB Residential, Oval Real Estate and MARK joining UK-wide partners including SKY as Official Presenting Partner and supporters Bloomberg. The World Reimagined have also been awarded grants by Arts Council England, The National Lotter y Heritage Fund, the Portal Trust, and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022

Royal Visits to The Jewellery Quarter

As far as we are aware Queen Elizabeth II never visited Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, she did however wear jewellery made here including a special piece in the story below. The closest The Queen got was back in April 1971, to open the Great Charles Street Queensway tunnel, part of the A38, right next to The Jewellery Quarter. King Charles III has of course visited the Jewellery Quarter regularly, starting with the Jewellery Business Centre in Spencer Street. On May 11th 1931 HRH The Prince of Wales visited the Jewellery Quarter. He is seen in the photogaph leaving No. 9 Vyse Street. It is very interesting to note the orderly crowd, and not a policeman in sight!
