Welcome

to the latest issue of The Hockley Flyer The Jewellery Quarter Festival is back in 2022 – make a note of the date - Saturday 23rd July, 11am - 8pm. Full details have yet to be announced, but there will be a crafts market in the Golden Square, live music around the JQ with the main Music festival in St. Paul's Square. Live theatre in Warstone Lane Cemetery, and the much-missed tours, live maker demos and other things we have missed without the festival The events season is now in full swing, with many of the courses and workshops back to near pre-pandemic levels, whilst the live music scene is everywhere it seems in the JQ anyway. The Tours, Talks and Walks are taking a little longer to get back to normal, although the museums that are open say they are getting fully booked some days and will be looking to open extra days shortly. If you wish to know what’s happening in the Jewellery Quarter see our events pages in this issue, or better still, see our sister web site at https://jqevents.info where you can find full info and click links to book tickets.

The Birmingham Assay office is pleased to announce the election of four new Guardians of the Standard of Wrought Plate in Birmingham. 66,500 file Tax Returs Early

Nearly 66,500 customers filed their 2021 to 2022 tax return on the first day of the new tax year - 6 April 2022 - HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has confirmed. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of ‘early-bird’ customers filing their completed Self-Assessment tax returns at the start of the new tax year – almost 30,000 more customers filed their returns on 6 April this year, compared to 2018 – and HMRC is encouraging others to change their filing habits and do it as soon as they can. Customers have been able to file their 2021 to 2022 Self Assessment tax return since 6 April. And while many wait until nearer the annual filing deadline on 31 January, for some it is an opportunity to beat the last-minute rush and get it done as soon as they can, while they have the relevant information to hand. Customers can file their tax return online. It is the quickest way to complete a Self-Assessment return and it does not need to be finished in one go, as customers can access their return online anytime and save their progress until it is completed and ready to submit.

Customers who file their tax return early could benefit from: y receiving a tax refund on any over-

paid tax from the 2021 to 2022 tax year sooner. Once a customer has filed their tax return, they can check if a repayment is due via their Personal Tax Account

y managing their tax bill via direct debit. Customers can use the Budget Payment Plan service to set up weekly or monthly direct

The Self-Assessment tax payment deadline for balancing payments remains unchanged – 31 Januar y 2023 Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “You don’t need to wait for the January rush to send us your tax return. More and more people are getting theirs out of the way early – search ‘SelfAssessment’ on GOV.UK to get started.” HMRC has updated the SelfAssessment guide to help customers navigate through the tax return process. It includes helpful information on: y how to get help with your tax return y what to do when declaring furlough payments, Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grants or other COVID-19 support measures y what information you need before you can start completing your tax return y help with paying your SelfAssessment tax bill y what to do if you have overpaid tax and are due a refund

Earnings and payments received during the pandemic will need to be reported on the tax return meaning customers must declare any grants or payments from the COVID-19 support schemes received between 6 April 2021 and 5 April 2022 as these are taxable, including: y Self-Employment Income Support Scheme y C o ro n a v i r u s J o b R e t e n t i o n Scheme y other COVID-19 grants and support payments y any coronavirus payments incorrectly claimed

The Self-Assessment deadline to file a return and pay any tax owed for the 2021 to 2022 tax year is 31 January 2023.

BAJ and Theo Fennell challenge students

The British Academy of Jewellery is thrilled to announce the launch of its ‘Circle of Life’ Live Project in collaboration with world-renowned London-based jewellery designer Theo Fennell. The project will see more than 70 BAJ students work on a jewellery brief set by the highly esteemed international designer. This exciting opportunity will give BAJ students the chance to show off the advanced technical jewellery-making skills they have developed through our highlevel, hands-on training. Students will also further their understanding of what it is like to work on a real-life professional brief. The project’s brief challenges participants to design and manufacture a ring representing ‘the Circle of Life’. Designs should be invested with real emotional and talismanic weight but must also take into account questions of comfort and practicality. These criteria have been conceived in order to encourage students to develop thoughtful designs with real commercial relevance. Participating students will benefit from feedback from Theo Fennell, invaluable input that will not only allow them to develop their designs twitter @hockleyflyer

for the Live Project, but also to evolve as jewellers. Three winners will receive the highly prestigious accolade of having their work showcased at Theo Fennell’s flagship store in Chelsea, where the pieces may even be sold if their designers so wish. In addition, one of these winners will be selected to have their work worn and photographed on a very special Theo Fennell customer. “The British Academy of Jewellery is honoured to collaborate with Theo Fennell and proud to be able to offer our students another opportunity to work with a prestigious international brand,” said Kate Rieppel, Head of Academy at BAJ. “Our Live Projects are an important way of providing our students with a sense of what it’s like to work on real professional briefs, one of the reasons that BAJ graduates are considered to be highly employable by so many key industry players.” “It’s inspiring to be able to work with enthusiastic young jewellery makers. Goodfellow, who has been in the jewellery industry for 35 years, eighteen of which working at the Birmingham Assay Office, started her career at Birmingham based jewellery manufacturer Gallery Jewellers, which became G&A Manufacturers, part of Abbeycrest PLC. Little did she know it would lead to a lifelong love and career in the jewellery industry. Her time at G&A took her to Thailand, where she was part of the project team managing the factory relocation from the UK. Goodfellow travelled between the UK and Thailand for five years and was involved in every detail, from seeing the original land purchased to helping to determine the manufacturing layout from the plan and subsequent staff recruitment and training. After the successful factory opening in Thailand and the closure of G&A, Goodfellow joined The Birmingham Assay Office in 2005 and was appointed as Manager of SafeGuard and AnchorCert Gem Lab. There began her 17 years at the Birmingham Assay Office. Goodfellow said: “my decision to retire from the industry was probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make. The organisation aims to create a strong support network for LGBT+ youth groups and young people, advocate for young LGBT+ people, and provide opportunities to bring young people together through regional events such as Pride Youth Games, peer educator training, and conferences. “At BAJ we really believe in getting our students involved in the wider jewellery community and encouraging them to use their fantastic jewellery making skills to make a positive impact on the world,” said BAJ Jewellery Diplomas Programme Lead Sally Collins. “We decided to run this jewellery sale to raise money for The Proud Trust, as we know it’s an important cause that would resonate with our students, staff, and wider community. BAJ and Fuli Gemstones present glittering peridot

To showcase innovative designs by the next generation of jewellers alongside the glittering possibilities of peridot, the British Academy of Jewellery and Fuli Gemstones recently held an exhibition in London. Members of the press attended the jewellery showcase which presented the culmination of BAJ and Fuli Gemstones’ joint jewellery manufacturing project. The jewellery on display was designed and manufactured by BAJ Jewellery Design and Manufacturing Diploma students using peridot stones generously donated by Fuli Gemstones. The students researched the long and vibrant history of peridot to each design a piece of jewellery which reinterpreted peridot’s legacy through a modern lens and used professional stone setting techniques to display the stone in a unique way. The joint project gave BAJ students the opportunity to work with a real industry brief and gain valuable, practical insights into the jewellery industry as they worked with Fuli gemstones’ dazzling stones. The project is one of the numerous initiatives BAJ runs to ensure their students gain the industry knowledge and skills to succeed in jewellery upon graduation. “The team at Fuli Gemstones were twitter @hockleyflyer

so happy to be able to help and collaborate with the final year BAJ students, through the company’s donation of peridot gemstones,” said Fuli Gemstones CMO Pia Tonna. “Fuli’s brief to the students was simple, to not hamper creativity, ‘be inspired by the history and mystery of peridot’. Fuli’s mission is to educate the next generation of jewellery designers on its natural peridot, collaborating with designers to create innovative jewellery, set with Fuli’s peridot, the results of all the students’ work was extremely gratifying.” “The British Academy of Jewellery are so grateful for the incredible generosity of Fuli Gemstones in our recent collaborative project,” said British Academy of Jewellery’s Jewellery Diplomas Programme Lead Sally Collins. “Level 5 students were all gifted a stunning Peridot gemstone to include in their jewellery pieces, and to inspire their designs; the resulting work is bold, innovative, beautifully crafted and above all, represents each student’s unique interpretation of the story of peridot. Opportunities to work with key industry partners such as Fuli Gemstones are so important to our students, in order to help them gain understanding of how the reallife jewellery industry works, and to aid their professional development. BAJ is looking forward to showcasing this peridot collection alongside other examples of the Level 5 student work at the BAJ Final Show in Julythis is definitely a group of budding jewellery designs to watch!”

The 'Brown Shed' Building - Robinson and McKewan 45 Frederick Street

Source: English Heritage. Photos Mark Haddleton

Originally built as a house of 1820 converted to a manufactory for Robinson and McKewan, manufacturing jewellers and silversmiths, 1882. The house was detached, set back from the street, and surrounded by landscaped grounds. By 1875 it had been taken over for use by the Birmingham Middle Class School. In the late 1870s and early 1880s the grounds of the house were sold off in plots for development, and 1882 the house was converted into a jewellery works, the plans for its con-

version produced by Ewen Harper and registered in February 1882 as ‘Alterations to dwelling house and additions to workshop’. Two parallel workshop ranges were built to the rear of the house, both built of brick and of two storeys. The house was re-fronted to give it the appearance of a purpose-built factory. The facade has stone dressings, including stone signage bands which bear the inscriptions ‘ROBINSON AND McKEWAN’ and ‘MANUFACTURING JEWELLERS’. The style of the facade matches the adjoining Variety Works at No. 46 Frederick Street, which was designed by the same architect in the same period and was a purpose-built combined house and works. It was multo occupied in the late 1800's. B e f o re 18 8 0 R o b i n s o n a n d McKewan were located at 136 Hockley Hill.

Metro services return

West Midlands Metro services restored on Thursday 9 June Following the successful testing of the first trams to undergo body panel replacements, tram services will resume between Wolverhampton St George’s and Birmingham Bull Street on Thursday 9th June. The number of repaired trams, along with the new trams which have successfully completed their testing and commissioning, means that a consistent service can be delivered. Initially trams will run every 12 to 15

Clean Air Zone sees air quality improve in first year

Air quality in central Birmingham has improved since the Clean Air Zone was implemented a year ago and has seen a significant fall in the percentage of most polluting vehicles entering the city centre This reduction in the most polluting traffic – falling from 18.7 per cent on 1 June 2021 to 9.2 per cent in April 2022 – has contributed to an overall reduction in the levels of nitrogen dioxide by 13 per cent in the first six months of the scheme. Nearly 1 in 10 (nine per cent) of all vehicles that enter the CAZ are vans – of which 79 per cent meet the emissions standard, but this rate of

minutes throughout the day. While trams have not been in service, this time has been used to bring forward several planned maintenance projects for 2022. Please be aware, there are some dates in the coming weeks where there will be changes to services to allow this work to be completed. Working closely with the manufacturer to accelerate the repair programme and as more trams become available, the service that is provided will be reviewed.

Church plans another August Bank Holiday Fete

At last year’s summer fete on August Bank Holiday Monday, the St Paul’s Church in the JQ got off to a flying start with its new fundraising campaign, raising over £10,000. This year, Reverend David Tomlinson hopes to do even better, and planning has started for the summer fete on Monday 29th August. David Tomlinson, the vicar says: “In the run-up to the 250th birthday of the Jewellery Quarter’s St. Paul’s Church, our new fundraising effort aims to raise £250,000 for its 250th birthday. I performed the official launch of the fundraising campaign at last year’s summer fete. “Last year’s fete was a roaring success. We had food and drink outlets, stalls selling local products, music all day, dancers performing on the Square, classic cars on show, portrait twitter @hockleyflyer

painting of visitors, as well as organ recitals and church tours inside the church. This year, we aim to repeat what worked well and add new attractions as well. I hope our community will join us for a day of fun, celebration – and of course raising funds to help keep us all dry by installing a new roof. There are opportunities for sponsors, for stallholders and for volunteers to help make the fete a success. With the funding raised last year and this year, the church intends to apply for grants for some of the six-figure sum needed for the roof, and modernisation of the church’s facilities. The vision is to serve the community through the provision of a centre for concerts, celebrations, and activities for everyone.” Anyone who would like to know more about becoming a sponsor, having a stall at the fete, or helping with the arrangements for the fete is asked to contact David Kidney:

A display, celebrating Birmingham’s status a Proud Host City for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, has earned the city council its tenth consecutive Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. Flowers grown at the council’s own nurseries and features linked to the Birmingham 2022 sporting competition and venues made up the eye-catching display, which has an interpretation of the official Games logo as its centerpiece. Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “Congratulations to everyone from our parks and nurseries team – they have done a fantastic job of promoting the city and our status as Proud Host City for the Commonwealth Games with their bold and brilliant entry. “The Chelsea Flower Show is a prestigious platform to promote the biggest event Birmingham will have ever held, and in winning this gold medal, we are getting a taste of the spirit of friendly competition that will be coming to our city. “This amazing floral display perfectly combines some of our most iconic landmarks and the various sports that will be contested at venues across Birmingham and the West Midlands during what will be an unforgettable summer.” During press day for the show (May 23), the council hosted visits by Team England athletes, who expressed their appreciation for the artistic skills behind the display. Diver Tonia Couch said: “It is so beautiful. I just love the amount of colour, it’s just so eye-catching and meaningful because there are lots of different sports involved in the Commonwealth Games. “My favourite part of the display has got to be the diving! The diving board with the water coming out is absolutely beautiful.” Race walker Tom Bosworth added: “It’s absolutely incredible. To learn all about it and see all the little pointers to the different sports is just absolutely amazing and to know there is 3000 flowers in it is just remarkable.

The whole thing is great, I’ve always wanted to come to the Chelsea Flower Show.” John Crabtree, Chair of Birmingham 2022, said: “The talented Birmingham City Council team has created a wonderful floral display to depict the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and I’d like to congratulate them on their success. We can’t wait to see this gold medal winning display recreated in Birmingham city centre during the Games and I’m sure it will be extremely popular with residents and visitors alike.”
