Exciting month for me personallyfirst day of Spring - my 91st birthday and Mother's Day all over one weekend 21st/22nd March and my granddaughter gets married on the 28th, in Cornwall. The February gales caused some damage and flooding. One wall which had been left unsecured a few years ago in Regent Place collapsed and some large branches came off a tree in Warstone Lane Cemetery blocking the new gated entrance in Vyse Street, which was quickly cleared.

More Residential use in pipeline - The increase in planning applications for residential use continues but at least some of the proposed new developments are leaning towards 'town houses' rather than blocks of so-called luxury flats. Some applications still far too bland with no features worth mentioning but others are acceptable. The massive development on the old 'bomb' site within the JQ is allegedly quite acceptable to some as not destroying our heritage yet a similar development in Digbeth is unacceptable to the same people!!!! It has also been announced that the Summer Hill end of the new Paradise Circus project will now include 70 residential flats - to rent only. All within 'coughing distance' of the Jewellery Quarter! There never appears to be any reference by developers in the prospectus about their contribution towards the 'Clean Air Zone'. Surely thousands of new flats would cause more 'foul emission' than one factory, with new central heating boilers, water/sewage/power - no substantial open area for children to play. Even us slum kids in the 1920's had a recreation ground set amongst the factories.

No real decision of where charging points will be positioned - e.g. part of ground floor of Vyse Street Car Park would be one good spot! There is also quite an issue brewing on new proposed developments regarding 'loss of light'.

Deadline 20th of month preceding cover date. The Hockley Flyer is published by YBA Publications.

If we cover the JQ in concrete we could see a return of the extensive flooding at the turn of the 20th Century, which killed people every year a flood potential is still there with some graves half full of water and the aquaduct containing the River Rae is now over 100 years old!

The Editor is pleased to receive any contributions suitable for use in The Hockley Flyer, and all correspondence should be sent to: marie@thehockleyflyer.info

How wonderful it would be to have either the A E Harris site, or the Mr Tyre site, made into an 'Open space' where people could sit amongst flowers and trees and the kids could kick a ball around?

Goldsmiths’ C & D Awards Exhibition at Birmingham Assay Office Fondly known in the trade as the ‘Oscars of the jewellery industry,’ The Goldsmiths’ Craftmanship & Design Award winners’ exhibition is heading to the Birmingham Assay Office this March. The Awards Ceremony is taking place at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London on February 24th, after which the exhibition, which has never left London before, makes its way to Birmingham. The exhibition will celebrate and bring together a selection of this year’s award-winning pieces. The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council have been running the competition for over 110 years and is unique and industry-focused, that

promotes excellence in jewellery, small-work, silversmithing and the allied crafts. The competition is open to everyone practising in the UK, engaged in designing or working with precious metals, gemstones, and other related materials. The Awards has helped, nurtured, promoted, and fostered the careers of many eminent craftspeople in the profession such as John Moore, Tom Rucker, Jane Short, Fred Rich & Sonia Cheadle and are the only peer reviewed awards in the industry’s calendar. The exhibition will run from 11th - 27th March at Birmingham Assay Office, which is situated in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter, allowing those who work or live close by, or in the surrounding area, an opportunity to experience the winning pieces firsthand.

The Women’s Jewellery Network has just launched membership - The Essentials package provides free access to WJN goodies just in time for International Women’s Month, transferring all of their subscribers across to the new Essential tier, which is free and always will be. Members on the Essential tier receive a monthly news round-up, as well as a commitment to receive WJN news before general release. The UK’s only membership organisation for women in jewellery has also unveiled a new logo and branding, with this latest news. MD Victoria McKay said: “It’s been a long time coming but we are very proud to announce the roll out of our membership packages. We’ve deliberately held back on launching a paid-for offer. We wanted to demonstrate real value to the industry before seeking to monetise our offer, and we believe that we have done just that. We have achieved so much with literally just our blood, sweat and tears, over the past three years and of course incredible goodwill and support from organisations and individuals across the global industry. The WJN Board, including myself, have held down full-time roles, whilst also delivering a platform that celebrates, encourages, and motivates women across the global jewellery industry for the benefit of all. As professionals of standing in the trade Kathryn, Asha and I have remained focused and genuinely committed to WJN.”

Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Memories Campaign By Josie Wall

A chance to share your memories of the historic Jewellery Quarter cemeteries or make new ones at an upcoming event on 25th April 2020 from 1pm to 3pm in Warstone Lane Cemetery. Key Hill and Warstone Lane cemeteries have been part of people’s lives in the Jewellery Quarter for generations, and lots of people have memories to share. The Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project is calling out for people who have a connection to the cemeteries to share their personal recollections which will form part of an exciting event. From residents and people who work or study in the Quarter, to others who have simply visited for a stroll, event, or tour; the project is on the lookout for anyone that has a special connection to these unique spaces. You may think that your memory of the cemeteries isn’t unusual, but every recollection is important because it adds to the picture of what Key Hill and Warstone Lane mean to the community. So far the project has heard from relatives who visit to bring flowers, local workers who nip

in to eat their lunch on sunny days, volunteers and council staff with many tales to tell; and even an author who used names from the gravestones as inspirations for characters in a novel. The project is gathering recollections, stories, and images of the cemeteries online over the coming months in the run up to the event and hope to learn many more on the day. They want to know why these historic cemeteries are special to you, what your memories of them are and how you hope they will be used in the future. If you would like to share a memory or photo of the cemetery, please email josie.wall@jqdt.org, use the hashtag #JQCemeteryMemories on social media or come along on the day. The event itself, will be a celebration of all the stories and historic images that have been gathered throughout the campaign. In the setting of Warstone Lane Cemetery, you’ll hear these stories and have the chance to make new ones by getting creative and adding a memory on to the ‘Tree of Life’. The Friends of Key Hill Cemetery and Warstone Lane Cemetery will be in attendance with a stall, and there will be a display about Jewellery Quarter Research Trust. Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust will also be running events as part of the global City Nature Challenge campaign. The collective memories gathered throughout the campaign and the event will then be used to inspire a

A £2.3 million restoration to Key Hill and Warstone Lane cemeteries funded through a partnership between Birmingham City Council, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust. This project aims to restore the cemeteries to their former glory and protect them for future generations. Alongside the restoration work, there will also be an extensive programme of events celebrating their heritage, natural environment, and community value. Further information: T: 0121 233 2814

This is mostly about bringing people together to celebrate our city's fantastic industrial and social history, plus the skills and diversity we have here in Brum. "As a kid coming into town from Winson Green on the 96 bus, I was fascinated by the Victorian houses I saw and the industrial streets of Hockley. Baker & Finnemore GOODBYE

D&M Bring Fairminded Gold to United Kingdom D&M Jewellery Finishers was established in 2004 and for many years was trading in the Jewellery Quarter, initially specialising in jewellery but later offering plating services across a wide range of products. They have always tried to ensure that their processes are environmentally friendly and have been able to carry out ethical practices ensuring the happiness of their staff. Their attentions turned further afield 5 years ago when they started to research the possibility of using fair-mined gold; gold that comes from small-scale mining communities that has been audited and certified as meeting world leading standards for responsible practices, delivering organisational and social development and environmental protection. By purchasing gold with the Fairmined assurance label they know where the gold comes from and that it is responsibly mined.

D&M Jewellery Finishers became a Fairmined authorised supplier in 2017 and have been working hard with the organisation and various mines and refineries to enable the production of gold in the format needed for plating. It has taken a lot of work and a long time but are really proud to announce that they are now the first company in the UK to be able to offer gold plating using gold that can be guaranteed as being ethically sourced with the Fairmined accreditation. The gold they are purchasing is from the Iquira mining organisation in Columbia, which is located in Columbia’s famous coffee region, so the miners alternate seasonally between artisanal gold mining and coffee cultivation! Since they gained their Fairmined accreditation they have been able to establish commercial relationships in Europe and North America enabling them to invest in better administrative facilities for the associates and workers of the co-operative, decreasing the use of mercury by 80%. So, a little investment in ethically sourced products at their end can change people’s lives all the way down the supply chain. If you want to read more about the Iquira community see https://www. fairmined.org/community-profiles-2/ iquira/. “We hope that customers will want to join us in making a difference to the mining communities and ethical practices of an industry that has not always been transparent in its practices.”

Sadly, the plant and machinery of Baker & Finnemore based in the JQ are now in the process of being dismantled and moved to Yorkshire. Although a thriving company with nearly one hundred skilled employees, the owners finally gave way to the associated extreme pressures of developers replacing factories with small 'to rent' flats. The company and its employees have been an asset of the Jewellery Quarter for nearly a century. Hopefully, those workers who do not wish to pull up roots and move to Yorkshire will all find skilled work in the West Midlands, and wish them well for the future. It must have come as a shock when their workplace was sold from under them and our thoughts are especially with David Wilkinson who has fought so hard over many months to retain this company in the Jewellery Quarter NOTE: Baker & Finnemore was featured in the Heritage section of HF No. 411 (page 36 Oct 2019)

News Ben Prior

WJN x Advocates The Women’s Jewellery Network has announced the appointment of four advocates, who identify as male, to support the global ambitions of the female-led and focused organisation, with specific reference to equality, diversity, and inclusion. The Advocates are Ben Prior, Sales & Business Development Executive, De Beers Group Industry Services, Jos Skeates, Goldsmith and Cofounder, EC One, Chris Oliver, Head of Professional Training, The Goldsmiths’ Centre and Stuart Pool, Gemmologist and Co-founder, Nineteen48. Managing Director, Victoria McKay, explains the significance of the advocate appointments: “When we launched WJN, we started with just five founding Ambassadors; women who wanted to be part of a movement that would challenge the industry to reflect and act on the issues of diversity and inclusion for females across the trade. Since then, we have started to crystallise our statement of intent. We restructured last year to form a directorate Board; we launched our mission, vision, and values (MVV); and we put out a call to the world of jewellery for more women to join our network to fight for real change. We were overwhelmed by the response and we are now working on a strategic activity framework for these wonderful women to lead on. “Whilst developing our MVV, we challenged ourselves to think about the diversity and inclusion challenges that we faced as a female-focused trade organisation. As a network we

20 Hockley Flyer The

March 2020

have always embraced the idea that those who identify as male would play a role; however, we know that there are some throughout the trade who may have made assumptions that we would be exclusionary. If we were to adopt this approach, we could quite rightly be accused of being guilty of the same bigotry that we have witnessed across the jewellery industry and beyond; denying the opportunity for positive and proactive input and insights from certain individuals based purely on their gender. This is and has never been the case; we acknowledged very early on that in order to change the narrative around gender, we would need all genders, especially those with the most privilege, to be involved in the debate, and we are very clear on our purpose and passion at WJN; in all areas and in whatever we do, we seek to be truly and utterly inclusive.” The Advocates have all signed up to the WJN MVV which states the organisation’s intent to effect real change within the global jewellery industry, for the benefit of all. Advocates are tasked with championing women’s rights and equality in everything that they do, rather than any specific support to individuals, which research shows can play into uneasy scenarios that can result in patronising or demeaning behaviours and outcomes. It is universally acknowledged that it is the environment, not the women, that requires change; and this is where WJN Advocates and advocacy in general has a major part to play. Victoria added, “The launch of this initial cohort of Advocates is the beginning of global strategy of inclusion for WJN; as well as opening up our Advocacy programme to other countries, we will be engaging with supporters across all protected characteristics, with a particular focus on the intersectionality’s that emerge, whether that’s race, LGBTQUA+, family structure, disability and religion. Equality for all means just that. We want to create a truly level playing field, where everyone is not only

Inhorgenta Munich 2020:

There was a good mood at the fair despite the challenging environment and further increase in the international spread of visitors Ecstatic winners at the Inhorgenta Award Gala - Inhorgenta Munich was the international meeting place for the jewellery, timepiece, and gemstone industry for four days. Around 26,000 trade visitors from more than 80 countries attended the event in Munich from February 14 to 17 and experienced a diverse range of brands, top-flight talks and a dazzling supporting programme. Klaus Dittrich, Chairman and CEO of Messe München, sums up the successful trade fair as follows: “The number of exhibitors and visitors, their internationality, the mood at the fair and the feedback from participants simply everything was right over the past four days. Inhorgenta Munich’s concept is compelling, and we’re delighted about that.” Stephan Lindner, President of BVJ - Federal Association of Jewellers, Jewellery and Watch Retailers, also gave a positive verdict: “After a good 2019, a successful season and a decent start to the year, we expected a good attendance in Munich. How-

ever, the high quality of the jewellers there and the great demand doubtless came as a positive surprise to many an exhibitor. We’re very happy with how Inhorgenta Munich went.” Excellent business platform for newcomers and established players - The challenging environment at present was hardly a topic and the trade fair again proved to be an ideal business platform, as confirmed by numerous exhibitors. That was especially clear in Halls A1- Timepieces and B1 - Fine Jewellery: Both halls were booked out down to the last square metre and offered the many visitors a mix of established players in the industry and newcomers with innovative products. Jason Newman, Country Manager Germany and Export Director Worldwide at the Festina Group, was highly delighted to be back at Inhorgenta Munich: “Our expectations were fulfilled completely. Our main goal was to showcase our expanded brand portfolio in this international atmosphere. The fair’s success is reflected in the orders we obtained and the high attendance at our stand.” The opinions were also positive in Hall B1, one example being Luisa Rosas, whose jewellery collection and stand design are strongly inspired by nature and who celebrated a successful premiere at Inhorgenta Munich. “During the trade fair we realized

One of them was jewellery designer Claudia Hoppe: “I’m delighted that Hall C2 took up the issues of sustainability and the future of retail and I think everything worked out very successfully.” Switzerland was this year’s partner country at Inhorgenta Munich. There was keen interest in the Salon Suisse, the heart of Switzerland’s presence as partner country, showcased top watch brands and a supporting programme on Swiss watchmaking. The Salon Suisse was opened by Markus Thür, the Consul General of Switzerland in Munich. He was thrilled by his country’s presentation: “The presence is lively, diverse, radiates a great appeal and lets us experience the Swiss world of watches with a lot of emotion.” The exhibitors at the Salon Suisse, which included the artisans Czapek, Parmigiani and Oscillon, not only displayed top-class timepieces, but also the underlying precision technology made in Switzerland. Dirk Boettcher, Sales Director at Parmigiani Fleurier, summarizes his impressions of the trade fair: “Inhorgenta Munich is growing steadily in importance and will continue to do so in the industry moving ahead. The Salon Suisse is a small oasis in the hustle and bustle of the fair and goes

down well with our retailers.”

Inhorgenta Award and Jewellery Show: “The places to be”

The Inhorgenta Award Gala was fully sold out: Around 500 guests were there on Sunday evening to see the coveted trophy presented in eight categories. As is tradition, the focus was on the winners and their innovative designs, but the industry also used the gala evening to network intensively. There was another crowd puller that attracted no less attention: The Jewellery Show, where beautiful jewellery creations, such as by Hans D. Krieger, IsabelleFa and Gellner, inspired visitors. Claudia Hoffmann, who is a stylist and co-founder of the Fashion Council Germany and was at the Jewellery Show for model styling and also a member of the award’s jury, sums up the two events: “Quite simply, they were the places to be this weekend.” Stefanie Mändlein, Exhibition Director of Inhorgenta Munich, is already looking ahead to the next staging of the fair: “The positive feedback from our long-standing and new exhibitors and from visitors is confirmation of our strategy of developing the trade fair platform further in close and constant dialog with our customers. We’ll be able to welcome further international top brands from the jewellery and above all the watch sector next year.” The next Inhorgenta Munich will be held from February 19 to 22, 2021, at the Messe München Exhibition Centre. Anderson’s Amongst 50 Most Romantic Restaurants in the UK in 2020 With Valentine’s Day now gone for this year, February restaurants across the nation were striving to be the go-to destination for diners looking for the ultimate romantic evening. In order to determine which venues are best achieving this goal, OpenTable has released a curated list of the most romantic restaurants in the UK - with Anderson’s Bar & Grill making the cut. This accolade is a particular point of pride for the entire Anderson’s team, as the award-winning steakhouse is the only restaurant in the West Midlands to be included on OpenTable’s definitive list. The list is based on reviews left by the people who know better than anyone what makes a romantic dining experience: the diners themselves. Over 8,500 restaurants were considered, spanning over a million verified reviews rating criteria such as service, ambience, atmosphere, and quality of food. The Anderson’s team strives to perfect these aspects on a daily basis for each and every couple who chooses the Birmingham-based steakhouse for their romantic meal. With such tough competition from all over the UK, including some of

the highest-rated restaurants and bistros in London, this latest success will only continue to push Anderson’s Bar & Grill to keep providing the excellent service customers have come to expect. The appreciation felt by everyone at Anderson’s for the glowing reviews regularly left by diners cannot be understated. Crafting the perfect romantic evening, whether it’s celebrating an anniversary or a surprise date night, is no easy task - but seeing the team’s hard work paying off makes it all worthwhile. Being named in OpenTable’s top 50 romantic restaurants in 2020 is undoubtedly one of Anderson’s proudest accomplish-

ments to date. From sourcing only the finest, most rare-breed beef the world has to offer, to boasting an expert team of chefs and servers, a date night at Anderson’s is an experience like no other. Of course, the best way to see for yourself just how Anderson’s earned its spot on OpenTable’s list is to book your own table for the evening. After all, according to the long list of stellar reviews, there’s no better place in Birmingham for a romantic meal than Anderson’s Bar & Grill.

Record Breaking Donations at Jewellery Quarter Suit Drive An incredible 800 items of work clothing have been donated by Jewellery Quarter businesses as part of the JQ Suit Drive, organised by the Jewellery Quarter Business Improvement District (JQBID). Battling the wind and rain, the JQBID was joined by volunteers from GoodGym Birmingham to transfer the donations across to Suited for Success - a charity that provides free suits and interview clothes to unemployed men and women. Over 800 items of work clothing and accessories were donated from generous workplaces across the Jewellery Quarter including ties, shoes, handbags, three-piece suits and smart blouses and dresses. Throughout the campaign these were dropped off at the Big Peg reception which acted as a central donation point in addition to providing free storage during the campaign. After volunteers had loaded up with bags and suits the short half-mile walk from the Big Peg to Suited for Success was made rather difficult by the driving rain and ice-cold winds, but Patricia White was delighted to welcome the volunteers and receive the donations. Patricia commented: “The donations raised will make a big difference to support the unemployed men and women we work with to succeed in a job interview, gain employment and change lives.”

This was the third JQ Suit Drive organised by the JQBID, and the second that involved volunteer help from GoodGym Birmingham. The total number of donations was more than four times what was received in 2018 when the last campaign was run. Jonathan Carter, GoodGym Birmingham Run Leader said: “Suited for Success is one of our regular charities and we’re always happy to bring more donations to them. GoodGym is all about getting fit while doing good by helping the local community. The work they do at Suited for Success is amazing, thank you to the Jewellery Quarter community for coming out to support them.” If you are interested in supporting the work of Suited for Success, they have an exciting fundraising event coming up on Saturday 14th March at St Paul’s Church in the Jewellery Quarter (B3 1QZ). “Preloved” is a designer-clothing fundraising event, bring your designer clothing and accessories and donate them to be

sold by Suited for Success. Or take the chance to browse through some bargain items for sale! The event will be open from 11 am – 4 pm with all proceeds going towards Suited for Success. Find out more online.

Birmingham Makes Largest Reduction in Rough Sleeping Amongst Core Cities

Applications Open for Clean Air Zone Exemption Permits Ahead of the launch of Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone this summer, applications are now open for temporary exemption permits. The exemption permits will be available to residents, low income workers and businesses in the Clean Air Zone for a period of one to two years. All of these exemption permits are subject to eligibility criteria, including the ownership of a vehicle that does not meet the emission standards for the Clean Air Zone, and only available on application through brumbreathes. co.uk.

The exemption permits available are:

Residents living within the Clean Air Zone who own a vehicle that does not meet the emission standards for the Clean Air Zone. EXEMPTION PERIOD: Two years from the date of launch for the Clean Air Zone Low income workers (earning less than £30,000 p.a.) whose registered place of work is in the Clean Air Zone. EXEMPTION PERIOD: One year from the date of launch for the Clean Air Zone Commercial vehicles registered within the Clean Air Zone (maximum of two vehicles) can apply for a year of exemption as well as Commercial vehicles with existing finance agree-

ment beyond commencement of the Clean Air Zone and registered within the zone. Community and school transport vans and minibuses will be able to apply for an ongoing exemption if they are registered as Section 19 or Section 22 for operation in Birmingham and not registered as a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle.

Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE, Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: “The Clean Air Zone is a huge step towards a cleaner and safer future for Birmingham residents. “Air pollution in the UK is now at dangerous levels and contributes to health impacts on people suffering long term respiratory conditions. As I have stated before, doing nothing is not an option. We are conscious of the impact the zone could have on key groups of people so the range of exemptions and financial support will help individuals, businesses and other organisations to make the change to a clean air Birmingham.” Further information on the zone, charges, details of the exemption permits and how to apply for them, can be found on the dedicated website. Rough sleeping across Birmingham has reduced thanks to the help and support of community groups, council commissioned services, health, and voluntary partners. On 27 February, the Government released annual figures detailing the number of rough sleepers across all English local authorities, as recorded on one night in November. In Birmingham, rough sleeping has almost halved with an approximate 52 people recorded as sleeping rough in the 2019 count, compared to 91 in the previous year. The decrease marks the largest reduction in rough sleeping of any core city in England. The count in Birmingham took place on 22 November with partners and specialists taking to the streets to count, and more importantly, engage with the city’s rough sleepers. A key part to the council’s approach to addressing rough sleeping has been in its flexibility and willingness to adapt. Over the course of the last 12 months, Birmingham has changed the provider for its Birmingham Rough Sleeper Outreach Team, has increased the number of staff on the team and expanded the area they cover, from the city centre to city-wide. The local author ity has also expanded its accommodation and capacity to provide for overnight Severe Weather Emergency Provision and is working with voluntary and faith sectors alike to achieve this. If you are concerned about anyone sleeping rough, please contact StreetLink.

Cemetery Lodge

161, Warstone Lane Source: M Haddleton. JQ Heritage

The Cemetery Lodge which gave access for hearses etc to the Anglican’s Cemetery in Warstone Lane was built in Tudor Gothic style in 1848 to the design of J R Hamilton and J Medland of Gloucester. It is a Grade 2 Listed building set in a rectangular pattern with central gated carriageway with limestone dressings, steeply pitched slate roof with crested ridge tiles and stone coping to gable ends. Gable end and axial stacks, each with 3 octagonal ashlar shafts with moulded caps and base, the south west stack is corbelled out from gable end. 2 storeys. 3 bays, the centre in tall advanced gable with marginal buttresses, double-chamfered 4-centred arch carriageway with carved keystone on corbel for canted stone oriel above with crenelated cornice and shaft rising from its roof to buttressed gable on gable apex surmounted by stone cross. Flanking bays have stone 4-light

has gabled central carriageway with diagonal buttresses, similar arch and tall stepped 3-light window and loop above; flanked by lower advanced gables, that on left with tall 2-light first floor window over panel and small ground floor window and on right 3-light ground floor and 2-light first floor windows similar to those at front. Chamfered 4- centred arch doorways inside carriageway and gates at front of carriageway with wroughtiron grilles in open panels and with wrought-iron hinges and cresting. The building on the LH side of the archway (adorned appropriately with red velvet) had a bier on the ground floor for coffins waiting for bearers to carry to the grave side. The Keepers cottage and the offices were in the RH side of the archway. By the 1960’s the fabric of the Lodge had deteriorated and considered ‘at risk’ and the Council were desperate for someone to carry out essential repairs and occupy the building - Barrowclift Silver eventually moved into the LH side of the Lodge and used it as a showroom, but very little was

Why Red Railings Around Cemeteries? By Marie Haddleton & Josie Wall

As an important part of the Restoration Work to the Cemeteries, new red railings have been erected around the Warstone Lane Cemetery (the original railings were removed as part of WW2 War effort - and later thrown into the north sea as being made of the wrong kind of metal!) But queries soon came pouring into The Hockley Flyer asking: "Is that the undercoat" and "What colour will they be when finished". The only specification in the planning documents stated in two

instances: “Finished in Brunswick Green” So - Why Red? The Hockley Flyer contacted Josie Wall - who is in charge of the Cemeteries Restoration Project, who quickly responded as follows: 'There was a colour survey done by the landscape architects and they concluded that red was the right original colour - and when they 'found' a fragment of the 'original' railings when excavating near the boundary wall, this confirmed their conclusions,' So - red is the final colour, it’s called 'Solemn Red' and is thought to be close to the original colour from 1848. The inspiration for that is thought to have been the railings which Pugin designed for the Houses of Parliament'. Explanation sounds fine - Thank you Josie. March 2020

done to repair the main fabric of the building at this stage. A well-known and respected conservation-minded developer took out a 125-year lease on the Lodge and did a great restoration job at the time. However, being a perfectionist, he was not personally satisfied that he had done an absolute perfect restoration job and began an extensive, almost re-build of the Lodge. (Note: All this intricate restoration work is recorded and photographed and will be published as a booklet by YBA Publications later in the year). Today the Cemetery Lodge is perfectly restored to its former glory and the building and developer have received many awards.
