QUARTER QUARTER TATTY OLD BOOK IS A REAL TREASURE

During some recent tidying up of files etc brought home from the office, I came across a tatty old book with no cover, found in a skip by someone and given to us, which told stories of a large number of companies who in both World Wars, turned to almost 100% war production. It was so interesting I felt the stories must be shared so have started a new Series ‘Jewellery Quarter at War’. I don’t know how many companies will be feaured but I reckon it will run for some time. The companies will be featured in the name of Jewellery Quarter Heritage and hopefully will encourage people to become a Member (only £10 per annum!). It’s so easy to join Jewellery Quarter Heritage (see new Web-

AT WAR

site) and we will be providing shop window/car stickers at a later date to Members. Professor Carl Chinn is our Patron. If you feel you that your company may not be in the book and would like to contribute a war story please check with us to see if your story is on our ‘special’ database.. We all know that the jewellers and silversmiths were ‘something special’ but on reading these forthcoming features I am sure you will feel amazed just how marvellous they really were then, and still are! There will also be stories of individual heroes killed in action who lived and worked in the Jewelley Quarter.

The Jewellery Quarter at War An Introduction to New Series

Before World War II it may have been thought that the jewellery and allied trades could not have been expected to contribute in any considerable measure to the production of munitions of War. The first reflection naturally being that only munition factories, large motor, aircraft, and engineering works would have suitable plant, executives, engineers, craftsmen and workpeople with experience to enable them to give an effective contribution to the tremendous production necessary for the conduct of a World War. But we hope that this Series will be of interest and show to the world the resilience, energy and enterprise developed, and the difficult work done by so many firms, of which we may one and all be justly proud.

Hockley Flyer October 2017 The

I am glad to say that my short trip to the QE to have my 8-year-old pacemaker replaced went off OK and the treatment I received could not have been better if I had been royalty - thanks QE staff and nurses. All set now for next 8 years - that will make me 97 years old - wonder if I will still be working? Any bets? This month of course sees Halloween, Macmillan Coffee mornings, and in November we have Remembrance Sunday, and Fireworks and switching on of the Christmas lights, details of which all appear on our very popular Events Pages. Hope you enjoy the Heritage pages this month - it looks as if Birmingham will be hosting the Commonwealth Games and this could mean extra work for our badge, medal and cup makers. Vaughtons are featured this month and they must be hoping for extra orders. By people getting together it appears as if we are going to get at least some of our overgrown trees cut back - see the ‘Friends’ news item. There are two things you simply must do - one is to join ‘Jewellery Quarter Heritage’ (only £10 per annum plus a donation if you feel so inclined or even sponsor a Heritage feature). The other is to join and support the ‘Friends of Key Hill Cemetery & Warstone Lane Cemetery’. Neither group receive any grants or other income and administration, etc is funded from volunteer’s personal income - most of them pensioners. They are both worthy causes. We are very excited about our new series ‘Jewellery Quarter at War’ which will start in November. We have over 80 stories already, most of which have never seen the light of day’. You can check with us via email whether your firm’s war record is on our database. The new Hockley Flyer way of advertising is taking off well (see special page). You will no doubt notice this from the extra advertising this month, especially in the jobs section. I have absolutely tons of research to do - mostly from our own database and files - one thing I need to look at is a puzzle about the Boulder Stone - an original picture of the stone being winched into place doesn’t look anything like the present stone, and what has happened to the attractive flowers that surrounded the stone until recently - it looks quite bleak and unattractive now! Marie Haddleton Editor

Benevolent Society Awarding Further Bursaries Hockley Mint Reveals Finalists in Anniversary Design Competition Birmingham-based jewellery manufacturer Hockley Mint has revealed the finalists in its 25th anniversary design competition, with six designers making the shortlist. The finalists are Anna Carter, Yasmin Everley, Roxanne Gilbert, Angela Gillies, Yvonne Knights and Jessica Mead, who were all applauded by the judges for their creativity and vision. Gary Wroe, managing director of Hockley Mint, said: “We were overwhelmed by the high quality of entries we received and I was particularly impressed by how inventively the concept of our anniversary was incorporated into the shortlisted designs. I am really looking forward to revealing the winner – and showcasing the winning design, which we will now be manufacturing – at IJL

next month.” Hockley Mint’s competition was launched at the Jewellery & Watch show in February 2017 to mark the British manufacturer’s 25th year in business. It invited both students and more established designers to help commemorate its silver anniversary year by designing a unique, statement piece of jewellery or silverware that represents Hockley Mint’s standing in the industry. The winning piece will be made in Fairtrade silver and may contain elements of Fairtrade gold. It will be cast by Hockley Mint and unveiled at a sparkling champagne reception at the International Jewellery London (IJL) show on Monday 4 September (stand D31), when the winner will be announced. It will then be displayed in Hockley Mint’s refurbished boardroom to commemorate the business’ 25th anniversary. The winner will be presented with a version of the design at the IJL show, and will also receive prize money of £250 and a year’s free insurance cover courtesy of TH March. TH March has also offered all entrants to the competition a 10% discount on insurance cover.

In 2016 the Benevolent Society, charity of the British Allied Trades Federation (BATF), changed its constitution to allow the charity to award bursaries to help individuals enter the industries that fall under the BATF umbrella. This has enabled the Benevolent Society to assist not only those at the end of their careers but individuals who are embarking on careers in the associated industries, allowing the Society to broaden its spectrum of support across the industries. Following the change in constitution a pilot scheme was launched from September 2016 to July 2017 whereby two jewellery students; Ruth Hallows and Annabel Large were awarded significant bursaries to allow them to cover their fees to progress onto higher level courses. Both students have had an extremely successful year, and have been identified as ‘rising stars’ within the industry. As a result of such a successful pilot scheme the Trustees of the Benevolent Society agreed for bursaries applications to be rolled out to all of the other BATF federated trade associations with the first bursary of 2017 being awarded to Surface Engineering Association (SEA) member company, Swinton Electroplating. SEA Chief Executive, David Elliott said, “This is excellent news” when hearing that Sarah Evens of Swinton Electroplating had been awarded a bursary from the Benevolent Society. “We have identified that there is a skills gap within our sector and this initiative from the

Benevolent Society is very welcome and will assist in the development of the next generation of surface engineers in the UK.” The application process is still open to those who wish to apply for a bursary (up to £9,000 for one candidate) to help begin or further their career within the BATF industries.

Bursary application criteria: Eligibility: 1. Candidate must be aged between 24 - 35 at 1st September in the year of entry to chosen area of study/course 2. Permanent UK resident 3. Candidate anticipates working in the allied trades covered by the BATF after graduation

Applications: 1. Application in writing 2. Recommendation from Trade Association 3. Award paid on a termly basis to the provider at the start of each term by BACS

Applications: 1. Applications to be reviewed by the Benevolent Society Bursary Committee 2. Recipient acknowledges award at end of year degree/diploma show if appropriate and agrees to participate in publicity and PR. Recipient also agrees to provide regular quarterly or termly updates to the trustees throughout their year of study. 3. BATF reserve the right to withdraw this bursary should the applicant not fulfil the conditions.

Birmingham Film Company Nominated IDM Media, a film production company based in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, has been nominated for an industry recognised Royal Television Society award for the third year in a row. The 2017 Royal Television Society Midlands Awards are highly prized in the media industry. They are a ‘kitemark’ of excellence and recognise the best media productions and talent in the region. This year IDM Media has been nominated for an award in the ‘Excellence in Production Craft Skills’ category. The nominated film – a short animation called ‘Boys and Girls’ - was produced for Services for Education and explains to children some of the myths about the differences between boys and girls. The film forms part of a wider relationship and sex education teaching resource pack for primary schools called ‘Clued Up for Growing Up’. Dr Sandra Passmore, Education Adviser at Services for Education said, “The animated films that IDM Media have produced are a delight to use. The films are now being used in schools throughout Birmingham and the West Midlands and teach-

ers, pupils and parents cannot speak highly enough of the quality and impact of the animations.” Simon Russell, the Director of IDM Media said, “Having been nominated for an RTS Midlands award for the past two years we were delighted to hear that we had been nominated again, this time in the ‘Excellence in Production Craft Skills’ category. We’re being recognised along with some of the region’s largest TV production companies including the BBC and Maverick Television - so it’s great company to be in!” The nomination comes at an exciting time of growth for IDM Media; the company has recently won a raft of high-profile commissions, produced its first TV advert and celebrated its 10-year anniversary. The business has also expanded to a team of five, with the recent addition of PostProduction Apprentice Tom Clabon. October 2017

Domino’s Anthology Collection Well Received at IJL Domino’s new fine jewellery collection comprising diamond and gemstone-set designs in 18ct gold, provided strong sales for the company at this year’s International Jewellery London with retailers buying into all ten of the very different ‘stories’ within

22 Hockley Flyer The

October 2017

the Anthology range. As its name suggests, Anthology offers stockists a number of separate collections each based on a fashionable design concept. Each ‘story’ comprises four to seven products inspired by the same theme. Pieces include statement necklaces, stylish pendants, chandelier, drop and stud earrings and various styles of dress ring. Each collection has a very different aesthetic, from grouping together deep blue sapphires and accent diamonds, creating a look which is

sophisticated, luxurious and opulent, to designs that tap into the trend for geometric styles with a distinctly retro vibe. All are named - for example Barleycorn, Gatsby, Eternal - and have a compelling back story for use at the point of sale. All pieces have been designed and developed in-house by the company’s prize-winning team and are unique to Domino. Each story comprises pieces covering a range of different price points which means that if a consumer falls in love with a particular story there will hopefully be a piece incorporating it which falls within their budget. Depending on the collection, pieces are offered in a varied selection of 18ct white, yellow or rose gold, set with HSi diamonds and precious gemstones. “We were truly delighted with our retailers’ response to Anthology and anticipate further sales as we move towards the Christmas season,” says Domino’s Sales and Marketing Director, Andrew Sollitt. “This collection has everything, from stunning hero pieces, ideal for a festive window, through to affordable gifts. The groups of products also provide a much wider choice and greater opportunities for personalisation than more traditional suites. We are thus confident that Anthology will allow retailers to up-sell across the various collections and will also engender add on sales.” Anthology is backed by an online brochure and images of all the pieces in the collection are available to retailers for their own promotional purposes.

At the Heritage Open Day on Sunday 10 September 2017 the Police raised their concerns about the overgrowth of the trees blocking out the light from the lamp posts making the area dark for public safety. This also affects parking and crime in the area with the Cemetery being a quick getaway with little or no lighting caused by the branches and greenery along these streets. The branches on the trees on Vyse Street also overhang the footpath in Warstone Lane Cemetery. There are also two fallen tree in Warstone Lane Cemetery, one is across a grave the other is blocking a foot path. This has been reported to Handsworth Cemetery, who are responsible for this cemetery. This has also been reported on website Fix My Street - www.fixmystreet. com. This excellent service is somewhere your complaint is sent to the correct department within minutes. The public can report street lighting, broken street furniture, graffiti, pot holes etc. The website does not deal with Police issues. The Friends had a good day at the Birmingham & Midland Institute on Saturday 9 September selling some items and many inquiries about grave locations. On Sunday 10 September the Friends had a stall in Warstone Lane and although this was a poor day for selling items, there were inquiries about grave locations. Some purchased virtual tickets for the Tours on the day from the website Eventbrite. PCSO Amanda Williams from the local Police said that they do look around the cemeteries ahead of the Heritage Open days but she was unaware that the Friends hold tours the second Sunday in the month, except for December.

Update:

As we went to press, this notification from Director Regulation and

Mike Sanchez at The Jam House Notorious British singer, piano player and guitarist, Mike Sanchez, will be headlining at the Jam House, Birmingham on Thursday 12th October 2017. Mike Sanchez is a local musician, raised in Kidderminster, and has a huge following of fans from all over the world, including many famous rock and blues legends who have lined up to work with him. of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, fronting the band alongside Georgie Fame, Beverly Skeete, Albert Lee, Andy Fairweather-Low and Eddie Floyd on their annual world tours. Mike is known as one of the most exciting and charismatic performers of Rhythm & Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll in the world today and his band performances continuously receive fabulous reviews throughout the blues and rock scenes across the UK and Europe. His performance at the Jam House is set to bring the house down, pumping powerful boogiewoogie anthems all night long. Vaughtons building Gothic Works.

Between 1866 and 1902, Vaughtons

were documented in various locations, then in 1903 Vaughtons relocated to an impressive purpose-built factory, ‘Vaughtons Gothic Works’ on Livery Street in the Jewellery Quarter. To this day it is an impressive building - It has excellent terracotta details, especially the lettering’. The building was designed by local architect and surveyor Sydney H Vaughton

P Vaughton and Sons have also made the Premier League’s winners medals for about 20 years. They are made of silver and then gold-plated with the league’s lion motif. Although the design looks simple, the firm’s managing director Steve Hobbis said they were difficult to make because of several little details such as the marks around the edge representing the 20 teams in the league. Mr Hobbis said his company won the contract because of its reputation as a medalmaking specialist. Vaughtons are still in the Jewellery Quarter located at 16 Well Street. Vaughtons Gothic Works. Picture taken from the 1906 catalogue.

It was shortly after the move that the company name was changed to ‘Vaughtons Ltd’ and their success grew whilst in these premises, manufacturing some of the companies most prestigious work, such as the FA Cup and the 1908 Olympic medals. We believe that predominantly, a lot of these jobs were due to Howard Vaughton being involved in the business.

window The FA ordered the club to fund a replacement and they asked P Vaughton and Sons, to make an exact replica of the stolen trophy. Fortunately, three years previously, the company had taken a plaster cast of the trophy in order to make a miniature for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Birmingham-made FA Cup remained in service until 1910, when it was presented to the President of the Football Association Lord Kinnaird and replaced with a trophy made in Bradford. It is now on display at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Howard Vaughton

Howard Vaughton, born 1st September 1861, was the grandson of the company’s founder, Philip Vaughton. Howard was a very famous footballer of his time, playing for Aston Villa, and for England. Howard was a part of the Aston Villa FA Cup winning team, and also still shares the record for the most goals scored by any one player in any England International game. Howard was an impressive sportsman who also won the British Skating Championship, played county level cricket, county level hockey, raced in cycling and was a first-class swimmer.

Excellent Magazine

I have been picking up a copy of the excellent magazine for some considerable time from the Post Office in the Jewellery Quarter but this seemed to cease during the re vamp. I now have taken out a subscription for a year so I can receive a copy each month. I have read several of the books which have been published including ‘The Jewellery Quarter History and Guide 2nd Edition’ and ‘Jewels of our City’ by Jean Debney. My reason for writing to you is that had you thought maybe sometime of publishing a book on the very interesting articles on Heritage which I feel sure if put together would make a very interesting addition to the existing publications. I do not know quite how many companies you have included in the magazine but I imagine you have been doing them for quite some time. Perhaps you and your team at the

meet the growing demand for their products and to extend their sales to all home and overseas markets. The opportunity was also taken to convert existing cellars to A.R.P. shelters. The main benefit of the alterations from the manufacturing point of view is that the firm will now have one large self-contained spinning, polishing and finishing shop. All polishing and finishing lathes are now independently operated by press button starters which elimates the noise and dust accruing from the use of pulleys and belting.’ Hockley Flyer might give this idea your consideration. In the early 1950’s I used to work at a factory in Tower Road Aston who also housed HP Sauce and Ansells Ltd (beer) - so you can imagine the smell sometimes! This was at Joseph Appleby Ltd and we had another company in Hockley Brook – George Edmonds - just where the flyover starts from Handsworth, long since gone. I come to the Quarter quite frequently to F W Meeks who I have known for a very long time. Kind regards, Tony Bettinson

Good News is that we have recently published a book on Gems Mythology, taken from pages which appeared over 12 issues of The Hockley Flyer and are now working towards publishing the ‘3rd Edition of The Jewellery History & Guide’ bringing details up to date - it is 30 years since we published the 1st Edition and the Jewellery Quarter has changed considerably!

Established in 1810, in 1897 the firm of Charles Harrold & Co. were trading from Nos 2 & 3 St. Paul’s Square where they Alloyed Gold and Silver and Melted and Rolled for the Trade. They were dealers in Gold and Silver, fine or alloyed, in Bars, Close-plating Silver, Sheets, Wires etc. The were also manufacturers of Gold and Silver Solders, Patent Watch Pendants, Blanks, Stampings, Beads and Jewellers and Watchmakers’ sundries. On Wednesday 30th April 1952 the goods of the company were auctioned by Edwards, Son & Bigwood & Mathews which included: Plant, Machinery and Office Furniture and 7hp National Gas Engine, 5 cwt. Avery Weighing Machine, Plumbago, Crucibles, Furnace, Tools etc., plus 18 Bullion Scales and Balances, 8 Fireproof Safes and four Calculating Machines, Roll-top desks, Foolscap Filing Cabinets and other Office Furniture. Plus an Austin 10 cwt Van (with re-conditioned engine). To publish a book including ALL the heritage pages which have appeared in The Hockley Flyer so far would be incomplete, remembering our database includes around 4000 company profiles plus all news items, would be tremendous and expensive. However we are looking at a way to put all these on line, adding items each month, and make these available to all members of Jewellery Quarter Heritage. Our new series Jewellery Quarter at War will make our Heritage pages even more exciting! Anyone who wishes to become a Member please refer to our website. www.jqheritage.co.uk Editor
