The Christmas Lights and the Christmas Tree look great and I was very disappointed when I was unable to take up JQBID’s invitation to participate in the ‘switch-on ceremony’. It was a lovely thought but climbing onto the platform in the high winds and pouring rain forecast was just outside my capabilities. I am sure the young and agile jewellery makers made an excellent job of throwing the switch!

Go Slow! We are getting quite a response to the proposed slowing of traffic along streets in the Jewellery Quarter to 20 MPH - some like it, some don’t! As one reader says: is there anyone to enforce it anyway! When a speed-check was carried out fairly recently, it was monitored throughout the day and an average speed taken which included such times as the 5.00 pm rush hour or should that be crawl hour, with many motorists taking a short-cut through the Jewellery Quarter, to get to the Aston Expressway etc, and avoid the Newhall Hill island, plus now of course, the new traffic lights near to the Argent Centre. Someone asked if the 20 MPH was the fastest or slowest enforced speed! What we don’t want is yet more poles stuck on pavements or signs added to lamp posts - we want less clutter, not more in this conservation area! The only extra ‘clutter’ we do need, however, is proper signage to Museums etc. If you watched the puzzlement shown by visitors standing on the corner of Albion Street and Frederick Street, you would understand. When I drive in and out of the Quarter I find it very difficult to get over 20 MPH with cars/vans parked both sides of the road, especially with the buses and wagons in Vyse Street - yet on the Hockley Flyover, no matter how fast you drive, there is always someone over-taking you - but never any check-points there. In any event, perhaps it would be more sensible to wait until the present traffic diversions have finished? Marie Haddleton Editor

Trade Talk from around the Jewellery Quarter and more.

Arctic Circle Wedding Bands Seal Wedding Of The Year

AOB Announces Another New Partnership Assay Office Birmingham continues to forge a new, ambitious future for itself and the jewellery trade, announcing an exciting collaboration with Holts Academy. The joint venture will launch a new centre of apprenticeships, learning and development from AOB’s new Moreton Street premises. Holts Academy will take residency in a purpose-built section of the new building, next door to the recently announced partnership with Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery. The Holts team will provide local apprenticeship training tailored to the UK trade. The educational space will provide an excellent learning resource for students, those seeking further personal development and young people looking for career prospects. Presently, AOB is putting the final touches to tailor-made classrooms and workspaces for Holts Academy, with the London-founded organisation set to move in after Christmas. Stella Layton, said: “This next strategic step for us is key to our continuous improvement strategy, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to support the industry and develop our Academy proposition. I am delighted to welcome Jason, Jaine and the Holts

team to our new facility, and look forward to working with them closely and helping them to develop this exciting proposition. As they support their Midlands and the North customer base from our location. “ Holts Academy aims to both meet and anticipate the needs for Further Education and Higher Education levels of training through its work with AOB. Its development of a National Skills Academy for the Midlands within the Jewellery Quarter will soon be equal to the facilities provided by Holts Academy in London, which has already established itself as a leading provider of jewellery apprenticeships for retail, manufacture and design.

Fully-traceable jewellery brand Arctic Circle Diamonds has partnered with Wedding Magazine’s annual Wedding of the Year (WOTY) competition, offering one lucky couple the chance to win the wedding of their dreams worth £25,000. Offering to make the winning couple’s wedding bands in precious Fairtrade gold, Arctic Circle Diamonds created a special day for this year’s winners – Adrian and Nuala Taberner – who visited Hockley Mint in Birmingham, where Arctic Circle rings are handmade, to choose their perfect wedding bands. Meeting Arctic Circle’s UK directors Gary Wroe and Judith Lockwood, Nuala and Adrian were welcomed with champagne and flowers. The couple was guided through the different profiles of rings, trying various styles to find their favourites. They were then taken on a special tour of Hockley Mint’s jewellery workshops, learning more about Arctic Circle’s use of Fairtrade gold and Canadian diamonds, while discovering how wedding bands are made. Selecting two classic Fairtrade 18ct yellow gold Arctic Circle wedding bands, Adrian and Nuala married at Notley Abbey in Buckinghamshire in late October. Judith Lockwood, Managing Director at Arctic Circle said: “Arctic Circle and Hockley Mint were really excited to be part of Nuala and Adrian’s day. They were the perfect couple and deserved to be winners of the Wedding of the Year competition. Gary and I really enjoyed meeting them, hearing about how they met, Adrian’s proposal, and the plans for their wedding. They also both truly had a love for and understanding of jewellery, so we all had a lot in common.” Lockwood added: “Their Arctic Circle Fairtrade gold wedding bands mean that we are a significant and

special part of their married life together. We loved spending the day with them and wish Nuala and Adrian every happiness.” The newlyweds spoke fondly of their visit to Hockley Mint, sharing images on Twitter of the day and their wedding bands. Nuala Taberner said: “We had a fabulous day when we visited Hockley Mint; it was really interesting to see all the different processes involved in making the jewellery, and Gary and Judith were fascinating. We loved hearing about their roles in the business and their ethical approach to jewellery making. Our rings are just perfect and we love wearing them.

With help from Gary and Judith, we got to pick exactly what we wanted and they’re even engraved with our wedding date! It’s nice to have the story of the day to tell to people when they ask about them, as well as the wedding day itself.” Adrian Taberner added: “We also learned about the different mines Gary and Judith had recently visited in Tanzania and the difference Fairtrade is making to the people who work in the mines. It was nice to hear how, back in the UK, Hockley Mint and Arctic Circle are working with apprentices from Birmingham, bringing a new generation into the business - especially as Gary himself started out as an apprentice.” Arctic Circle is leading a new era of ethical bridal jewellery with fullytraceable Canadian diamond and Fairtrade gold designs, priced from £600. They will launch new designs for 2016 at Jewellery & Watch Birmingham in February.

‘Ken Boon (Michael Elphick), star of ‘Boon’ and ‘Three Up, Two Down’, was a visitor to the Jewellery Quarter on 3rd February 1987, when a couple of scenes were being filmed for ‘Boon’. The Central TV vans arrived very early in the morning and managed to perch themselves around Warstone Lane and Spencer Street, and filming began. Dave Keay’s Jewellery shop ‘Key Jewellery’ in Warstone Lane was used as the set for a scene in which someone is trying to pass stolen credit cards in the story. As soon as ‘Boon’ himself arrived in the shop, the intrepid editor from The Hockley Flyer stepped forward, shook his hand and gave him a welcome from the Quarter and he very kindly agreed to pose for a picture for us. That particular scene was completed and then camera and crew all transferred to the car park in Spencer Street where a scene was filmed with Boon’s famous motor bike.

It’s Going to Start Buzzing in Our Cities Biffa Award, Buglife, Birmingham, Bristol… a lot of b’s which all add up to the Urban Buzz, an eight city project to create habitats for pollinators. On the 23 November 2015 Buglife launched an ambitious new programme of activity that will work with local people in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Ipswich, Leeds, Leicester, Plymouth and York to design and deliver flower rich areas to benefit bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The project will run over three years with each urban centre receiving 18 months of intensive support, thanks to a generous grant from Biffa Award of more than £1 million, along with sizeable contributions from other funders both nationally and locally. Christmas service - Nine Lessons and Carols (Sun 20 Dec 2015, St Paul’s, Jewellery Quarter. (free/ donations). The Grade I listed ‘Jeweller’s Church’ is famed for its association with the great industrialists Matthew Boulton and James Watt and makes for a beautiful setting for a selection

of enduring and familiar carols. Expect to hear such favourites as ‘Hark The Herald Angels Sing’, as well as some lesser known works by John Joubert, Herbert Howells and Gareth Treseder. Conductor and composer Paul Spicer’s new song ‘Now Is The Time Of Christemas’, commissioned especially for Birmingham Bach Choir, will also be performed. Monies raised from this service will be donated to doctors working in Aleppo, Syria. Birmingham Bach Choir’s Chair Sarah Platt said: “Our Christmas appearances are always firm favourites with audiences - especially Nine Lessons and Carols, which is always well attended. At a time of horrific conflict in the wider world, we’re also proud to be able to offer our support to both the QEHB Charity’s military patients’ fund and the Singing For Syrians initiative. We hope our appearances result in much needed donations for both causes.” W: www.birmingham.bachchoir.com

ties Fund. The first phase of the Urban Buzz – which was launched in Birmingham on 23 November - will see project officers consulting with the residents of Birmingham, Cardiff, Plymouth and York on the best places for pollinators and new flower-rich areas which will be created in order to enhance these cities. This initial work will be followed by intensive seed sowing and plug planting to create lush, vibrant flowerrich swards. Vicky Kindemba, Buglife’s Urban Buzz Manager commented: “This project is the biggest scale urban based project for UK bees and will help create a template that can be repeated across the entire United Kingdom helping to secure a long term future for our vital pollinators. “Today the urban environment provides one of the mainstays for our pollinators but the concreting over of garden and brown field space is putting increasing strains on species survival; the Urban Buzz will help redress the balance in favour of our pollinating friends who freely contribute £600 million per annum to the UK farming industry.”

Councillor Lisa Trickett, Cabinet member for Sustainability for Birmingham City Council, said: “I am delighted Birmingham is one of the pioneering cities involved in the Urban Buzz programme to demonstrate how simple changes to land management can help provide food and shelter for bees and other pollinators. “We will be working with local communities and partners to develop two areas: the Urban Wellbeing Park in Erdington, linking Sutton Park National Nature Reserve with Spaghetti Junction, and the A38 corridor between Northfield and the city centre – to create significant stretches of wildflower meadows to encourage and support pollination.” Gillian French, Head of Grants, Biffa Award said: “We’re really buzzing about this project to engage people with wildlife in urban areas. Pollinators are vital in any ecosystem and we’re really proud to be supporting this essential conservation work. The team at Buglife have grand plans, and we’re pleased that the Landfill Communities Fund can be used to help them achieve their ambitions.”

A lot of people, workers and residents alike, will know Mike, the official Jewellery Quarter Big Issue seller. Mike always has a friendly smile and word for everyone and says he has loved every minute of the five years he has been in the Quarter. The Big Issue Foundation is doing a wonderful job in helping people, who very often through no fault of their own, have become homeless and fallen out of luck. The Foundation gives them a chance to earn some money and get back their selfrespect. They are not beggars they are working for their living! I have always believed that ‘there for the love of God go I’ . A Merry Christmas, Mike, from your friends in The Jewellery Quarter and good luck in the future.

Gunmakers Arms ‘Saved’ The Two Towers brewery has bought the lease of The Gunmakers Arms Public House which is in the Gun Quarter bordering The Jewellery Quarter. Plans are to re-open the pub which is in a Grade II Listed Building, dating back to the 1800s. This is good news as there is very little remaining of this once worldfamous part of Birmingham known as The Gun Quarter.

Boon Back in the Quarter The Hockley Flyer Issue 49 1988

On July 14 1988 yet another episode of the ‘Boon’ series was being filmed in The Jewellery Quarter and again the scene was set in Dave Keay’s shop ‘Key Jewellery’ in Warstone Lane. Dave’s office was arranged to resemble a smokey, somewhat sleezey solicitors office where Boon is asked to trail a party in a divorce case. The scene in the shop itself has Harry talking to ‘Wally’ the jeweller asking whether he has seen a guy with a girl who is not his wife, and he also buys some jewellery. This particular episode is called ‘Peacemaker’ and will be screened towards the end of the year.

Anchor Adds Final Touch to New AOB Building Assay Office Birmingham wanted a bold Anchor - the AOB’s long-time emblem - to stand proudly on the front of its new building. The design brief was something not too traditional - instead, a little more abstract and to look like an integral part of the building, while also having a sense of movement. The resulting design was the fruit of ideas shared by the building’s architects and Steering Group, who came up with an anchor motif created in aluminium spines with cut outs, so that as you walk or drive past the building, the anchor seems to gently move. The design also gives the impression of being ‘stamped’ into the front of the building. The anchor was crafted by fabricators in Hereford and is made from extruded alumnium to keep it lightweight. It measures a total of 8m tall x 4.5m wide, and stands above the Moreton Street entrances to AOB. It also took four days to install. Also present on the door are hallmark symbols. Of note: MB for Matthew Boulton, Lion passant for Sterling Silver, Anchor for Birmingham, A for 1773.

Following their lectures, the experts will be available in oneto-one interviews to answer questions and provide individual advice. Exhibition Director Stefanie Mändlein emphasizes, “We are proud of the fact that we have been able to persuade high-ranking specialists and experts of the digital world to take part in the premiere of the Web Campus at Inhorgenta Munich 2016. We see ourselves as bridge builders who provide assistance and valuable support in questions regarding the future. In doing so, we intend to ensure our industry partners’ success both online and offline and to propose concrete solutions to current problems.”

A Click Into The Industry’s Digital Future - First Web Campus At Inhorgenta Munich 2016 The Internet with innumerable business models has also dramatically changed the jewellery and watchmaking industry and disbanded existing commercial structures. The future of action consists in the interplay between store-based retailing and unlimited online shopping. Inhorgenta Munich’s first Web Campus will show how this challenge opens up new opportunities for jewellers. From 12 to 15 February 2016, this new facility will set the course for an efficient online presence of the industry. “Digitalization is comprehensively changing our economy and society. Like all other sectors, the jewellery and watchmaking industry must deal with this situation. These changes, however, also lead to opportunities for trade. Owing to the many facets of multi-channelling, in other words, the approaching of consumers via different on- and offline channels, jewellers have the chance to meet lovers of jewellery and watches wherever they like to be: at the shop and/or online”, states Klaus Dittrich, Chairman and CEO of Messe München. In Hall C2 “Contemporary Design & Vision”, on the seminar area, experts in the fields of social media, e-commerce and future technologies will give lectures dealing with topics that open up a new perspective on the consumer’s wishes and needs for the jewellery and watchmaking industry. “Every company is different and has its own history and exclusive positioning requiring effective online presentation in order to exploit the possibilities offered by the Internet in an optimum way“, states Sven Suberg, advisor at Suberg Strategy Consultants. “In doing so, it is of decisive importance to build up an e-commerce infrastructure, thus envisaging further, creative sales opportunities also outside one’s own online business.” Dr. Jochen Schäfer, lawyer, will explain how to avoid legal pitfalls in connection with e-commerce using examples of particular cases. The constantly increasing importance of social media is a new chance also for the jewellery and watchmaking industry. Social media experts will pinpoint how to build up interesting Facebook and Twitter channels with the objective to tap into new customer groups. In addition, trend researchers will give insight into current and future technology developments. The

The redesigned hall structure makes Inhorgenta Munich more manageable and transparent for visitors and offers exhibitors an ideal ambiance for presenting their jewellery collections. All Lit up For Christmas 2015 On Friday 13th November, after a weather forecast of high winds and pouring rain, the skies cleared and the 100 Christmas light displays were switched on to light up the Jewellery Quarter for Christmas, although Luke tells us that they lost a wrestling match when setting up the stage in the strong winds earlier in the day! This is the highest number of lights we have ever had, with a lot of them being specially made because some of the ‘old’ lights were not repairable. Six of the jewellers who are now retailing in the Jewellery Quarter section of John Lewis were invited to jointly switch on the lights and four of them were available to do so. Lots of food and drinks were on hand and music was in the air, shared by a fantastic firework display. On the Golden Square there is a 30 foot high Christmas tree which rivals the height of that in the very heart of the City Centre!

Shoppers Guide

JQBID will be producing a ‘shoppers guide’ including all retailers, to hand out to visitors to the Quarter before Christmas and will also be promoting a ‘Small Business Saturday’, getting people into the Jewellery Quarter three weeks before Christmas to do their shopping in the best place for Independent and Family-run Businesses.

Starting Work at 15 in The Jewellery Quarter in 1954 Getting a job or career was so different back in the 1950’s. Here is one person’s account of getting a job at John Goode & Sons back in 1954, and the circumstances surrounding the appointment. ‘I was 15 years old and just left Secondary Modern school with no qualifications apart from the ability to write my own name in both capitals and joined up writing, living in dirty Smethwick near the canal junction on Bridge Street and next to dozens of factories producing everything from bicycles to railway engines. The manufacturing industry was still recovering from the 1939-45 war, there were ten jobs to every applicant, unlike today, companies were falling over themselves to employ youngsters. I went looking for a job unsure what I wanted to do apart from earn a bit of cash and buy a pair of shoes, the

ones I was wearing had holes in them and the cardboard stuffed inside them kept falling apart. I tried cutting a bean tin up and place it between the ground and cardboard, the trouble was walking down the street I sounded like a tap dancing troupe trying to outdo the dray horses. In the first week of job hunting I visited eleven companies. My first was a steel sheet producer, after walking through a muddy yard, avoiding huge crane hooks swinging with massive chunks of metal hanging from them I was told to go into the gaffers shed, the green one. There were five such sheds, none of which remotely resembled the shade of green, dirty brown or mucky grey perhaps, but no green. After banging on two of them without response, I decided the other three, which were further down the muddy yard, was a shed too far, and anyway my feet were now soaking wet so I retreated back through the swinging hooks and mud. My next try was a heavy steel works making thick metal stamping and pressings, the noise was ear shattering, ducking under hot steam vents pocking from a wall and yet

again having to paddle through ankle deep mud to another shed, void of any colour except rust, I entered the inner confines of the Forman’s office, he sat on a high stool eating a grubby sandwich with grubby hands, he interviewed me between chewing for about five minutes, in that time I heard nothing coming from his mouth apart from when he yelled some expletives to an unfortunate shoddy figure covered in black oil, who must have crawled from a vat of gunge. I shouted over the noise until my throat hurt and left. Next was yet another steel manufacturing company, getting to this one I had to negotiate a lake of moving white foam oozing from a metal doorway, I tried walking around it, then jumping over it, wrong move, I became stranded in the middle of a swirling lake of white suds, some workmen came paddling through it as if it wasn’t there, it was over their ankles, one of them laughingly shouted, yo watch were yo put yo’er fate, there’s rats in there mate. After getting my feet and legs wet I went back home to dry off. Another day and more interviews with steel manufacturing companies, this time, when entering a muddy

Colonisation of the Jewellery Quarter - Early 1800s. Brum Trail 6 K Hughes 1994 ‘Robert Thomas was a cabinet maker living on the slope above Graham Street, who avoided the cost of a separate workshop simply by converting an outhouse in his garden for his carpentry. His neighbour William Davis used his own scullery to make saddle nails. By 1820 the entire district had been colonised by small entrepreneurs who had quit their workshops in the crowded streets, built during the early Colmore estate development, and who had started production in their own homes. Once enough capital had been amassed the manufacturer moved his family out to Handsworth or Hockley and sub-divided his original home into workshops for renting by those craftsmen who could not afford their own property. By the time of Victoria’s accession in 1837, the town end of the present Jewellery Quarter was largely given over to steel toy makers, jewellers, goldsmiths, gunsmiths, japanners, button manufacturers and metal workers of all descriptions.’

yard I was confronted with a locomotive steaming its way down the yard towards me. The interview was much the same as all the others, shouting at each other, competing against the intolerable noise in the background. It was the sort of noise that you catch in your hands, put gently inside a pocket then release it along the cut tow-path to frighten the birds. I never knew if I was ever offered a job or not, I nodded or shook my head when I though it appropriate. After all the experiences of steel factory interviews I was taken aback when I was interviewed by Mr John of J, Goode & Sons, gold chain manufacturers. I rang the shiny brass bell on a wonderfully polished oak door; I was then ushered down a plush carpeted corridor, passing oak wall panelling with glass cabinets along the walls displaying silver shields and cups, guided into an interview room that smelled of rich leather and polish, told

to wait a while, I gazed around taking in the splendour of a huge mahogany desk with ornate brass ink wells, and chesterfield furniture. Mr John came in to the room, we shook hands, and he indicated me to sit down on one of these leather chairs, it was so quiet, no steam hammers shaking the foundations, no screeching machinery shocking the nerve system, no hammer drills shaking ones teeth to dust. And my feet were dry. When Mr John spoke I could hear everything he said, it was as if the walls were whispering his words back to me. That was on a Thursday, I was asked if I wanted the job and when I could start. I said yes please and start tomorrow, Friday. It was suggested I start the following Monday. So I became a goldsmith chainmaker working with some wonderful craftsmen and women.’

‘In 1986 Crown Giftware & Jewellery of Pemberton Street were invited to produce a trophy which is presented each year to the top salesmen in the world by The General Electric Company of America. This was in the form of a model Formula 1 racing car, cast in Pewter, which was presented to the winners in London by Alain Prost.’

FA Cup When Aston Villa won the FA Cup Trophy in 1895 it was stolen when being proudly displayed in a shop window. The FA ordered the club to fund a replacement and they went to P Vaughton and Sons to make an exact replica. Fortunately, three years previously, the company had taken a plaster cast of the trophy in order to make a miniature for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Birmingham-made FA Cup remained in service until 1910, when it was presented to the President of the Football Association Lord Kinnaird and replaced with a trophy made in Bradford. It is now on display at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

An exhibition showcasing designermakers who have an ethical approach to craft-making. This ranges from makers incorporating found objects into their work, recycling and up-cycling and/or using fair-trade materials to those using energy-efficient processes. At a time when we are often unaware of the origins of materials used in items we buy, this exhibition encourages the viewer to consider the object’s journey. Makers registered with the Fairtrade Foundation are also included. Fairtrade Certified Gold is the world’s first independent ethical certification system for gold and makes sure that smaller mining companies are not pushed out of business. As always, with a range of price tags for all budgets, it’s the perfect opportunity for a guilt-free treat!
