November 2013

Marie Haddleton and from the Editorial team.

Most of you will remember the fight the Hockley Flyer put up to keep the Ticket Office in the Jewellery Quarter Train Station manned both for the service that person provided by directing visitors to the museums etc in the Quarter, but also for security reasons - well, as anticipated, the ticket machine has now been vandalised! It’s nearly Christmas so spring can’t be far away and we understand that the site planned for the Golden Square will not be disturbed until after the New Year - pity the trees were removed twelve months before it was really necessary!

The Road that Birmingham Forgot

This story by Grove Pattern Buttons is fascinating to say the least but it shows what can be done if you persevere! Button manufacturing, along with pens and pen nibs, was as important, if not more so, in the history of the Jewellery Quarter as the manufacture of silver and jewellery. We would dearly love to see a Button Museum similar to The Pen Room!

Permit Parking

Those closely involved with the meeetings about the introduction of ‘Permit Parking Bays’ in the Quarter will remember that when it was pointed out to the Council and consultant (Atkins) that a large number of the proposed Permit Bays were blocking the entrances to building sites which had planning permission, we were assured that these Permit Bays were only ‘experimental’ and ‘temporary’ and when sites needed opening up, they would be removed at no cost to the developers - at least three sites are now opened up (Tenby Street North, Carver Street and Legge Lane) and problems with parking wardens have been causing havoc, together with demands from the Council for high costs to remove the Permit Bays! As many of the senior Council officers who worked with Atkins and ourselves at the time have now ‘left’, I have approached Cllr Sir Albert Bore personally for help. If you have a similar problem please let me know a.s.a.p. I understand the promised ‘Parking Review’ has taken place but have seen no sign of the result as yet.

Gerry Pountney

Lots of you know Gerry - he was very poorly in hospital but glad to hear is out and about again now. Marie Haddleton Editor

Stella Layton Announced as Incoming Chief Executive & Assay Master for the Birmingham Assay Office The Birmingham Assay Office has announced the appointment of Stella Layton as incoming Chief Executive and Assay Master of The Birmingham Assay Office. Stella will take up her new position in January 2014 and will work alongside current Chief Executive Michael Allchin throughout a three month hand over period until his retirement at the end of March. recent takeover by Heimerle & Meule. She has worked in precious metals for 28 years and brings a wealth of relevant knowledge and experience to The Birmingham Assay Office. She is no stranger to the Office as Cooksons have been a customer for decades and Stella herself has been a Guardian since 2007. She is also a Liveryman of the Goldsmiths

Company. Stella has also applied her management skills outside the precious metals industry, serving as a nonexecutive director of the Birmingham Women’s Hospital Foundation Trust, and also the Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Trust. Making the announcement today, Chairman Kate Hartigan said, “We are delighted to have found someone of such high calibre, with the appropriate experience and proven strategic skills to take the Birmingham Assay Office through its next stage of development. Stella joins The Assay Office at a significant time when, in addition to its statutory duty of hallmarking, the Office is driving growth through diversification and our plans for a move to a new purpose built facility in the Jewellery Quarter are well under way. As only the 13th Assay Master in 240 years of history Stella has the opportunity to really make her mark and we look forward to welcoming her in 2014.”

and quality of colour is just not possible with any other medium” - Fred Rich British enameller The Goldsmiths’ Company is sponsoring a major exhibition showcasing the work of Britain’s leading enamellers. Entitled Heart of the Heat this stunning and fascinating exhibition is on view at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham from Monday 11 November to Friday 13 December 2013. A joint initiative between the British Society of Enamellers and the Guild of Enamellers, the first in a 30 year history, the exhibition features

prominent, influential, and innovative contemporary enamellers from both associations. The list of enamellers featured reads like the Who’s Who of British enamellists. Most notable are Jane Short and Fred Rich, both Liverymen of the Goldsmiths’ Company, together with Phil Barnes, Vladimir Böhm, Stephen Bottomley, Gillie Hoyte Byrom, Pat Johnson, Joan Mackarell, Liana Pattihis, Elizabeth Turrell, Jessica Turrell, Tamar de Vries Winter, Ruth Ball, Sheila Macdonald, Jenny Edge, Penny Gildea and Evangeline Long to

name but a few, as well as other skilled members of both organisations. The ancient art of enamelling is one of the most exacting and challenging crafts associated with the work of the goldsmith. It is essentially a form of applying decoration by means of powdered coloured glass which is then fused onto a metal surface by firing at a very high temperature. Every step of this process requires great artistry, patience and above all skill. The use of enamel dates back to the ancient Egyptians who applied it to pottery, stone objects, and sometimes jewellery. Enamel was also widely used by other early civilisations across Europe and in China. Once the powdered glass has been melted and fused the surface of the enamel becomes hard, smooth and durable, hence many enamelled objects and works of art from previous ages have survived providing vital documentary evidence of this ancient technique. There are various forms of enamelling techniques the most widely practised being Basse-Taille, Champlevé, Cloisonné and Plique à Jour and the skills have been passed down, largely unchanged, through the centuries. Today’s enamellers continue to push the boundaries and the pieces in the exhibition including jewellery, vessels, boxes, other decorative objects, display all the traditional enamelling techniques as well as demonstrating other current practises such as copper and steel work with fold-forming, sifting, high-fired, sgraffito, wet-laying, kiln-firing and torch-firing. In addition five of the country’s leading commercial enamelling companies based in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham are also represented with examples of regalia and commercial work. The pieces chosen for the exhibition were selected by a panel of members from both Societies, chaired by Bridie Lander Course Director Extended Diploma, School of Jewellery, Birmingham Institute of Art & Design (BIAD). 60 enamellers will be featured showing between one and five pieces. An illustrated colour catalogue is on sale during the exhibition at a cost of £5. The catalogue is dedicated in memory of the enameller Rachel Gogerly, whose work is included in the exhibition and who died earlier this year.

Betts Metal Sales Mad Hatter’s Tea Party On the 27th September Betts Metal Sales on Spencer Street, Hockley took part in the Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning, in aid of raising funds for those affected by cancer. ‘The world’s biggest coffee morning’ was arranged by the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support, urging people within the quarter to raise as much money as possible. Jewellery Quarter Raises Over £7800 for Macmillan Businesses and residents from across the Jewellery Quarter have raised over £7800 for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of the charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Ambitious plans to encourage everyone in the area to join together and collect the monies raised to make one overall donation was hatched back in July by the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust and estate agency Maguire Jackson. Since then, over 30 businesses signed up to either host a coffee morning or donate prizes to a raffle to help raise money and present the charity with the ‘Jewellery Quarter’s Biggest Cheque’. were just a few of the activities which proved to be the recipe of success. “Macmillan Cancer Support is a fantastic charity and we have been overwhelmed by the time and effort of everyone involved and the generosity of those who attended the events,” says Philip Jackson, director at Maguire Jackson. “Prior to the day volunteers pounded the streets to help raise awareness and it worked. Cancer touches almost all of us, directly or indirectly through friends and family affected by the disease and we know the funds we have raised will make a real difference to someone’s life. e

have now set the target and next year will be bigger and better,” says Philip. To celebrate their success, representatives from across the Jewellery Quarter gathered at St Paul’s Church to officially hand over the cheque. “The Macmillan coffee morning is always a success but to receive a cheque which incorporates the work of so many is great,” says Natalie Bridge, a fundraising manager at Macmillan. This donation will enable Macmillan to continue to reach individuals who need our support and improve their lives.” www.macmillan.org.uk

The Goldsmiths’ Company’s 19th Young Designer Silversmith Award 2013 The Goldsmiths’ Company’s 2013 Young Designer Silversmith Award has been awarded to Kyosun Jung a silversmithing student at the University for the Creative Art at Rochester. This prestigious competition organised by the Goldsmiths’ Company, focuses on young silversmithing students at university in Britain today, and is open to any student under 30 on a BA or Master’s degree course. The Award scheme was started in 1994 as an initiative to encourage students to show their artistic individuality in silver and to give them the opportunity to perfect dexterity of craftsmanship under the guidance of a master silversmith. The design brief changes from year to year. On this occasion the students were asked to submit designs for a drinking set for a particular alcoholic spirit. The brief specified that the set should comprise at least four drinking vessels, as well as another vessel relevant to the drink (possibly something for water, ice, lemon, salt, etc.)

plus a tray for the set to sit on. There also had to be a coherent theme running through all of the pieces and the design had to emphasise the enjoyment of the chosen spirit. Kyosun (22), who originally comes from South Korea, chose to design a saké set. The set is made up of a carafe with four accompanying cups all of which fit snugly into each other. The vessels then sit on a tray made from bamboo and wenge (African hardwood). Kyosun based her design around the shapes and patterns found in bamboo plants and developed the idea through drawings and prototypes. Although still in model format the judges were extremely impressed with the design concept and unanimous in their decision that Kyosun should be the winner of the 2013 Goldsmiths’ Company Young Designer Silversmith Award. Clive Burr was the master-silversmith who took Kyosun under his wing in his workshop at the Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell. With Clive’s experienced guidance, Kyosun was able to translate her sophisticated design into silver. Kyosun explained, “One of the main technical challenges was that all the ribs on the design had to be individually soldered on, together with the soldering of the separate layers to create the shape. To give an idea, there were 71 separate wires in the

saké bottle alone, so that was quite a challenge.” Aside from the soldering other techniques used were spinning, complex fabrication, and engraving. The result is breath-taking and technically brilliant. Clive Burr said; “Kyosun is an impressive young silversmith. She has the rare and important ability to adapt quickly to the new skills and techniques which were needed to produce her very technically challenging designs. Her creative enthusiasm is wonderfully refreshing and we are both thrilled with the result”. The Victoria & Albert Museum in London was the venue for the culmination of this year’s Young Designer Silversmith Award. At a reception attended by the Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company, Richard Agutter, together with Rosemary Ransome Wallis Curator of the Collections at Goldsmiths’ Hall, Kyosun’s silver sake set was presented to Martin Roth, Director of the V&A Museum for the museum’s permanent collection, the V & A being the most appropriate major museum nearest to the University for the Creative Art at Rochester where Kyosun is a student. Witnessing the presentation of Kyosun’s Saké set were some of the judges of the competition, as well as Brian Hill, past Course Leader at the University for the Creative Arts at Rochester. The Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company handed

Kyosun her winner’s certificate and a cheque for £500 and declared himself to be “blown away by the beauty and craftsmanship of her work.” Kysoun responded that she was thrilled to have had the opportunity to work in a professional workshop and was very grateful to the Goldsmiths’ Company. Winning the award has enabled her to add to her skills and experience and she acknowledged the huge support that she had been given by Clive and his team. Once she graduates, Kyosun plans to do a post-graduate course at the Goldsmiths’ Centre and hopes to continue to work as a professional silversmith in the UK.

The Skin Practice - Secrets of a Healthy Skin The Jewellery Quarter is famous for its heritage, designing, manufacturing, and retailing of silver and jewellery, but in recent years the JQ has also become a desirable place for independent retailers to cater for the growing mix of residents. Sandy Sabdhu, a young business woman who had a successful clinic in Herne Bay in Kent for the past six years, decided to relocate to Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter and set up The Skin Practice & Bitty Brow Bar at 38 Northampton Street. Sandy became particularly interested in ‘skin’ and decided to further her training to become a specialist. This new Skin Practice was opened to primarily focus on skin but other beauty treatments are also available. 90% of ageing is extrinsic ageing caused by pollution, smoking, UV rays, poor diet, stress, use of harsh products. This all inhibits cells from producing healthy skin cells resulting in premature, photo-damaged, lacklustred skin. Under normal conditions in healthy skin all nutrients come through via the blood stream, but the skin has to share with all the other organs, so therefore cannot always get enough. That is why low doses of oral vitamins are of no great value to the skin. While many of us are concerned about the visible signs of ageing, the idea of having surgery is

simply unthinkable and expensive. There are, however non surgical solutions that can prolong the health and youth of our skin. The Skin Practice offers skin specific supplements with optimum levels that reach cellular levels, normalising defected cells and reproducing healthy youthful skin cells at the birth stage. Vitamin and anti oxidant rich cosmeceutical skin care range, protecting and restoring the skin. Skin perfusion treatments that help to make skin thicker and more elastic and to develop more collagen. Advanced non-surgical treatments to assist in maximising penetration of vitamins into deeper layers of the skin, achieving faster results. Safe and gentle light repetitive skin peels which preserve the integrity of the epidermis. The most important thing to remember is that the correct vitamins (either in supplements or topically) is irreplaceable for the skin. There is simply no alternative, many other expensive products will make your skin ‘feel better’ but nothing else will actually give you better skin. A vitamin rich skin is a healthy skin. Sandy Sandhu (the skin specialist) has been featured in various publications for her work, her greatest achievement being featured in the International Anti Ageing journal and her experience, expertise and the results she has achieved for many of her clients gave her the necessary encouragement to open The Skin Practice & Bitty Brow Bar. Sandy told the Hockley Flyer: “I love a challenge and it still amazes me the fantastic results I keep achieving, which is why I want to share the secrets of healthy skin with the world. High Street brands are designed for the masses at low strengths, your skin DNA is unique, supplementing, strengthened vitamin creams, and the delivery methods you use to facilitate products into the skin are all important factors, if you want to see major shifts in your skin you need to start doing something different than simply applying a high street branded moisturiser.” (Contact Sandy The Skin Practice 0121 233 3010)

Shocking Boat Accident in Handsworth Two Persons Drowned A distressing boat accident occurred on Saturday, at a pool on the grounds of Mr. D. S. Hasluck, The Austins, Handsworth, by which Sidney Herbert Hasluck (aged 14) and Thomas Jenkinson (23), gardener, both lost their lives whilst gallantly endeavouring to save the lives of others. Shortly before the occurrence, the nurse and four children entered a boat on the pool, for the purpose of fishing. The boat was about 20 yards from the side, and at a deep part of the pool, when a daughter of Mr. Hasluck’s, aged ten, in changing her seat, overbalanced and fell into the water. Her brother,

petrolene or liquid gas lamps. Shown is a picture of the very fine works which were in Great Hampton Street. The company manufactured gas fittings and chandeliers, diesinking, stamping, piercing, medal and coin works. James Hinks died in his 50th year in 1905. Sidney Herbert Hasluck, at once jumped into the water to rescue her, and as both were struggling in the water the piercing screams of the other occupants of the boat brought the gardener (Jenkinson) to the spot. Observing the critical position of the children, he at once went to their assistance, but as he approached, the boy clung desperately to him, and both sank. Mr. Ivins, the farm bailiff, arrived at this juncture, and he succeeded in rescuing Miss Hasluck, receiving some aid in his efforts from Mr. Hasluck’s coachman. Although much exhausted, in a short time both were completely restored. We regret to state that the boy and the gardener were both drowned. Dr Shaw was in attendance when the bodies of the unfortunate deceased were recovered; but his services were of course, of no avail. It is almost unnecessary to add that the unfortunate affair caused great distress in Mr. Hasluck’s family, and much excitement in the neighbourhood.

York Terrace Hockley Hill Once a busy, thriving community in a small space!)

We are trying to trace all the companies who were once based in York Terrace which is now derelict and looks like remaining so for a long time, the difficult access being one of the main drawbacks. My first office was ‘up the terrace’ and I can remember the companies who were there then, such as G.A.Winfield (mechanical handling); Dyson & Hussey (locket makers); Arthur Stanley (jewellers), York Polishing, Prize Polishing, Lecol Engineering, Ivor Jones (machine builder), also there was a Car Mechanic and A.D. Lock (Safes) on the corner of Great Hampton Street (still there). On the opposite corners was a small public house ‘The Trees’ (we were there during a very rare heat wave and I used to take a jug to the outdoor to get an ice-cold shandy!) We have discovered this watch company so far, but does anyone remember any other company up York Terrace? Remarkable Demonstration of Respect Funeral of Mr.W M Butler (Mitchells & Butlers Brewery) at Key Hill Cemetery August 29 1907

The largest funeral procession that has been seen in Birmingham followed the remains of the late Mr. William Butler to the grave. The floral tributes were exceptionally numerous and elaborate whilst the concourse of people on the route between Elmdon, Selly Park, the residence of the deceased, and Key Hill Cemetery, the place of internment,

was so great that the police had difficulty in regulating the crowd. Deputy Chief Constable Mr. Manus and about 150 men were engaged in diverting the traffic and keeping the way clear for the cortage. Many marks of respect were shown along the route, all the licensed houses owned by Mitchells and Butlers being closed and shuttered with black boards, whilst blinds were drawn in many private houses at Selly Park. About 200 wreaths and crosses were sent to the house, conspicuous among them were floral crowns, emblematic of the house at which the deceased commenced business as a brewer in a small way. An exceptionally large crown, 5ft across,

In addition to recovering wastes from the jewellery trade, the company dealt with wastes from potteries, mirror manufacturers, platers and other industries, the biggest development at this time was the recovery of silver from the photographic trade, with the company carrying out all the refining work for Kodak for many years until the 1970s. John Francis Betts had two sons and despite many difficulties during the 1970’s the company survived and continued under Stephen and now two of his sons Daniel and Charles, who are the ninth consecutive generation of the Betts family to manage a business which has now been in existence for quarter of a millennium. was placed on the hearse, while six vehicles were required to convey the other floral tributes to the cemetery. Twenty-two mourning coaches were provided by the undertakers. In addition over a hundred carriages and public conveyances joined the procession at Five Ways. The re-forming of the procession at this point caused some delay. Broad Street, Summer Row and other thoroughfares on the route were packed with people, and the crowd outside the cemetery gates was so dense that several women fainted. Three-quarters of an hour elapsed between the arrival of the hearse and the last mourners. It is estimated that the procession was a mile and a half long. November 2013

Platform for the Finest Stones Claims Pole Position The 29th Intergem has maintained its position as the market-leading gemstone trade fair despite the tough climate in the jewellery trade. IdarOberstein received some 3200 trade visitors. In highest demand were very high quality gemstones and pearls. “That was a good fair,” concluded Kai-Uwe Hille, Managing Director of Intergem, and continued, “timing the fair to coincide with the long weekend worked well and we have achieved the same visitor level as last year. Following persistent niggling by our company the road

has now had the cobbled surface restored by Amey and has been reopened for use. parison with other industry events this autumn, which have shown a sharp decline, this is very pleasing. Heike Faller, of gemstone cutters Karl Faller, agreed, “We are happy. We had a lot of valuable meetings. Amongst others we were visited by the Cartier delegation, which we had invited. Plus there were more visitors from abroad than in previous years.” Dieter Hahn from Ph. Hahn Soehne also noticed this, “we took details from many visitors from France and the Netherlands but also Belgium, Iceland, Finland and Switzerland,” he said. This impression was supported by the management figures. Germany’s European neighbours especially, provided markedly more trade visitors than last year. Nicole Ripp from gemstone cutting firm Groh + Ripp was pleased with

the excellent quality of the buyers, “there were a lot of top quality jewellers here. And they were prepared to invest at the top end of the market.” Sabine Brunk from gemstone dealers Siegfried Giede confirmed this assessment, “in comparison to other specialised trade fairs, we have sold more high-priced goods.” Intergem 2013 has held its ground not only as a show but also as an order platform for the finest gemstones, pearls, gemstone jewellery, tools, and technology. Above all, confidence in the integrity of the goods on offer is playing an ever more important role in the face of internet-based competition. As Dieter Hahn said, “Especially with regards to very valuable gemstones such as diamonds, customers like to be sure and prefer to rely on the

Domino’s Ten Days of Christmas With only 60 or so shopping days left until Christmas, the Domino marketing team has turned its attention to offering the company’s stockists a unique promotion guaranteed to help the festive season go with a swing. In the company’s own take on the classic ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’, Domino retailers will receive tempting daily ‘offers’ on jewellery and services for the ten days between 11th and 22nd November, 2013. “There won’t be any partridges or pear trees and certainly no Lords a Leaping in The Domino ‘Christmas Countdown’, but there might well be discounts on some of our gold ring mounts,” explains the company’s sales and marketing director, Andrew Sollitt. Exactly what retailers can expect

must remain a closely guarded secret, but there will be a mix of exciting offers, including discounts, special suites of products, prize draws, and giveaways – all available for one day only. We have drawn together ten, very different Christmas treats for our customers, news of which will be emailed to them on a daily basis. Clearly it is all intended as a bit of festive fun

and we hope they will look forward to receiving these but the promotion also has a serious purpose in flagging up some of the very many Domino products that make perfect Christmas gifts,” says Sollitt. Retailers not currently on Domino’s email list who would like to receive The Christmas Countdown offers should contact Sally Holgate on 0121 237 4937 without delay.

competence which a family business has developed over generations rather than on some certificate. This has boosted our business this year.” Frank Heringer from the Diamond Group was also very pleased with the results of this year’s fair; “from a turnover perspective this has been our best Intergem since we have been exhibiting here. The event is a worldfair in XS format. You just have to shout loud enough, invest in advertising, and invite customers and the right people will come.” Thomas Heintz from the goldsmiths’ equipment manufacturer Otto Simon also had no complaint about a lack of crowds, “business was very good,” he said. The ‘Germany necklace’ which came to prominence during Angela Merkel’s election debate with Peer Steinbrueck,

received a lot of attention. During a tour of the exhibition made following her opening speech, Eveline Lemke, Minister of Economic Affairs for the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, had a close look at the piece and was one of many to do so. Hans-Peter Weyrich from the goldsmiths Ulrike Weyrich will be producing a small series of the necklace. There were numerous other superlative pieces on display, including a 100-plus carat mandarin garnet at Constantin Wild’s stand, an almost seventeen carat Paraiba tourmaline at Groh + Ripp and a particularly deeplycoloured African tourmaline at Wild & Petsch. These exceptional stones represent the pinnacle of the trade fair’s offering, which is only found in this concentration at Intergem. The slight drop in exhibitors to 140

firms, is not a problem, according to the trade fair’s MD Kai-Uwe Hille; “the important thing is the quality of the goods on offer. And all the important market players were present. Mind you we will be intensifying our efforts to gain even more international exhibitors for the Intergem.” The visitors were in any case happy with the selection of exhibitors, “you find the finest of the fine here,” said Robert Steinlin, a goldsmith from Herrliberg in Switzerland. For the fair marking the occasion of Intergem’s 30th anniversary, from 3 to 6 October 2014, the exhibition team and the exhibitors will have a lot of new surprises. Goldsmiths’ Fair Report 2013 The superlative talents, skills, and creativity of British goldsmiths and silversmiths were on full display at the recent Goldsmiths’ Fair in London. The 31st annual Fair proved that despite our ‘brand” dominated world, there is a constant and ever growing population who appreciate the original and prefer to buy something that is ‘ndividual, personal and even unique. Attendance was roughly on a par with last year and buying remains confident and informed. Once again the overall take of the Fair is well into impressive seven figures while the subsequent follow on trade and commissions placed during the year remains incalculable vital proof of the importance of the Fair to not only the exhibitors but the resulting cascade effect to their out-workers. As silversmith Rebecca Joselyn says: “It’s not just about the sales I make at the event (which are a huge help) but it’s the contacts I make during the week and the follow up business that continues for months, even years afterwards, which are absolutely key to my continued success.” It’s also interesting to note that consumers are sophisticated, wellinformed, and demanding – particularly when it comes to quality both in terms of craftsmanship and design. Buyers come from all over the world – Japan, Mexico, the US, Europe, Australia and although the

36 Hockley Flyer The

November 2013

Fair is very much a consumer event, it also attracts trade buyers – jeweller Sarah Parker-Eaton took orders from a gallery in Paris, James Newman and Louise O’Neill both sold to galleries in the US, Dagmar Korecki from Copenhagen, to name but a few. Recent graduate jeweller Victoria Walker, who received one of the 10 Goldsmiths’ Company graduate bursaries at the Fair said: “One of the many benefits of exhibiting at such a prestigious event is that it attracts visitors from all over the world, and at least four of my orders were for customers who live overseas. Making good contacts is also another big part of doing the fair. During the week, I was approached by journalists, bloggers, suppliers, galleries, and even a large high street store enquired about stocking my work.” The Fair continues to be an excellent hunting ground for engagement rings and many couples were observed on such romantic missions. Indeed a marriage proposal took place in front of William Cheshire’s stand – to everyone’s relief it was accepted to a round of applause! Royal visits to Goldsmiths’ Fair are quite usual and this year the Fair was honoured by two Royal Visits. In Week One TRH The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, both frequent past visitors enjoyed meeting and chatting to exhibitors and in Week Two HRH The Countess of Wessex made her first ever visit to Goldsmiths’ Hall and was clearly impressed with the quality and variety of the work that she saw. Silversmith Rebecca Hill was

chosen for the ‘Best New Design Award, Week One 2013’ and was presented to HRH The Duchess of Gloucester who described Rebecca’s work as “elegant, original and fun.” Jewellery duo Shimell and Madden took the Week Two ‘Best New Design Award’ for their debut fine collection ‘Symmetry’ which combines richly textured 18 carat gold with prismatic coloured gemstones. Rosemary Ransome Wallis, Curator of the Goldsmiths’ Company Collections, was also impressed: “It was so encouraging to see such vibrant creative vitality in the craftsmen’s work on show in this year’s Fair. This innovation combined with quality craftsmanship meant that the Company bought four pieces of silver all deemed to be worthy of joining the most prestigious collection of contemporary silver in the world.” Pieces were purchased from Angus McFadyen, Rauni Higson, Esther Lord and Kathryn Hinton. Goldsmiths’ Fair remains one of the most important events in the Goldsmiths’ Company’s calendar and the Company is totally committed to ensuring that this ever-popular event goes from strength to strength. As Paul Dyson, Director of Promotions, steps down, next year’s Goldsmiths’ Fair 2014 will come under the responsibility of David Mills, the newly appointed Head of Communications and Marketing, together with the support of Joanne Dodd. They will be advised and guided by key industry personnel on the new Communications Committee to ensure the selection standards do not slip.

In a couple of clicks the AnchorCert Gemstone Carat Weight Estimator can easily calculate the estimated carat weight of diamonds & gemstones from their measurements. The calculation will use the measurement of the length, width and depth of the gemstone (and the minimum and maximum diameter of round brilliant diamonds.) The carat weight estimator contains a comprehensive database of diamonds & gemstones as well as a wide selection of shapes/cuts. The App contains detailed information about each individual gemstone including its Specific Gravity, Mohs Hardness and Refractive Index.

Paul Dyson said, “It has been a huge honour to work with, promote, and develop the businesses of so many craftsmen. Far from retiring I will be developing other support for all these terribly talented jewellers and silversmiths. My cufflink collection, which was not small to start with, has been hugely enhanced by the fine examples that I have purchased at each Fair during my 12 years with the Goldsmiths’ Company. This year I bought a pair of Mokume Gane links from Craig Stuart.” David Mills said, “Looking ahead we are pleased to re-affirm our commitment to the Goldsmiths’ Fair and to maintaining its position as the premier fine jewellery and contemporary silver selling exhibition in the UK. This is the beginning of a new chapter for Goldsmiths’ Fair. Expect an exciting evolution that will build on the signature quality and elegance of the Fair while pushing forward toward a more global audience of luxury collectors.”

Jasper Carrott OBE Joins The Pen Room

The Pen Room has announced that Jasper Carrott has agreed to become a patron of The Pen Room. Jasper was born in Birmingham in 1945 and educated at Acocks Green Infants/

Junior School and Moseley Grammar School. He soon discovered he had a talent not only for making people laugh but also for singing and the rest, as they say, is history! On Jasper’s first visit to The Pen Room he immediately became a supporter and is now a patron so, hopefully, we will see him around the Jewellery Quarter quite a lot in the future. November 2013
