Where every animal counts! YOU are amazing! Yes I am talking to YOU---the person reading this. The Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) is able to do the amazing work we do because of YOUR support and all of us at YHS are so very grateful for all that YOU do. I personally am amazed by the commitment and support that our community has for YHS and that’s one of the reasons I am so proud to be a part of this organization. We have our annual family friendly Walk for the Animals, presented by Talking Rock Ranch, coming up this month on May 20th. What an awesome time to both celebrate the work we collaboratively are able to do and raise even more funds so we can keep on doing it! While this will be my first year at the event, this is the 6th annual Walk and I am looking forward to experiencing this wonderful event I have heard so much about from past participants. This year the YHS Walk for the Animals will take place on Saturday, May 20. I invite you your family (2 legged and four) and friends to join us at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Your registration will allow you to choose from a beautiful 1 mile or 5 K (just over 3 miles) course and you will enjoy local vendors, a kid’s zone, dog friendly activities, a low cost vaccination clinic and more. When you sign up to walk you will get your own customizable fundraising page where you can ask friends and family to support your efforts by donating to your page. Collect money on or offline and as a thank you we have some great prizes ranging from bandanas for your dog to a vacation trip for you and your friends. The more you raise the better the prizes get! Best of all, every dollar raised through this event stays right here in your community helping to fund more than two dozen programs and services that help support pet owners in need as well as more than 3,000 of the most vulnerable dogs, cats and equines who come to YHS each year. I have already met so many wonderful people who have given me such a warm welcome to the community and I look forward to meeting more of you at this event. You are a hero to pets in need and the Walk is another chance for you to help shape the future for these animals. Thank you so very much,
Jocelyn Bouchard Ps: Can’t be there in person this year? You don’t have to walk to raise money. You’ll still be able to provide your valuable support and still be eligible for those great prizes! And we promise to take lots of pictures and videos for you to enjoy.
Daisy found her way home, thanks to you
Feb. 28, 2015 started just like any other for 11 month old Daisy, a toy poodle. She had joined her family of dog lovers just two months prior as her mom, Robin, longed for a small dog who could be her constant companion. Robin was delighted to add Daisy to the family’s mix of dogs including Nugget. Nugget’s need for adventure took her on long outings where she always returned home safe. Then one morning Nugget’s new sidekick Daisy joined her on the escapade. It was a day with many errands in and out the front door. When the rush of errands calmed down Robin and her husband realized Daisy and Nugget were not around! They immediately began to canDaisy (left) pictured with sister vas the neighborhood looking for the pair. Nugget after returning home. About an hour after searching for the dogs, Robin missed a phone call. The caller left no message so she called the number back and left a message sharing that if the caller had called about her missing dogs please contact Robin right away. The caller rang back, and though they said Daisy was nowhere to be found, Robin was still relieved to hear the caller had found Nugget. Desperate to get Nugget back home, Robin asked about going by to pick her up soon, but the caller insisted on connecting the following day. When a time and place were determined for the reunion, the finder came walking from around the corner with Nugget, a 35 lb. dog in her arms! But Robin’s grief for missing Daisy didn’t go away. Over the course of the next year and a half, Robin’s aggressive search for Daisy continuted with flyers, foot searches, and postings on lost dog pages until the family moved from Arizona to Texas. Robin continually kept Daisy’s microchip updated with phone and address information hopeful Daisy would be found. Two years after that day when Daisy went missing Robin received a call from Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) telling her Daisy had been found about 2 hours north of where Robin and her family previously lived in Arizona. Daisy’s current owner told YHS they had purchased Daisy from a friend 4 months earlier. They clearly loved and cared for her as she was well groomed, in good health, and they had brought her in to have her spayed. When the vet prepared to spay Daisy, they spotted a scar indicating she was already spayed. A scan for a microchip followed and Robin’s microchip registration popped up. Thankfully, the current owner recognized what Robin had gone through and that Daisy, Robin and her family deserved to get their little girl back. Robin didn’t hesitate in making the trek from Texas to Arizona the next day. She is thrilled that Daisy still responds to her original name, and is easily settling back in with her fur siblings. Robin says, “If there’s any silver lining in Daisy’s time away, she came back liking kids more than she did when she left!” Originally published in and adapted from generationwags.com
Cover dog: When Isabella first arrived at our shelter she was in great pain. Her little body was shutting down as she struggled for her life. We knew we had to do everything we could to help her. With intensive surgery, around the clock medical care, the generosity of donors like you, and compassion of our team, Isabella’s story has a heartwarming ending. You gave 2nd chances playing games that give Many of you have heard about our “Games that Give” fundraising series where people play games to raise donations for Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) homeless pets. The idea first started in 2015 when YHS volunteer Candy McLeod organized a “Mah Jongg for Mutts” fundraiser. She recruited 64 Mah Jongg players who came together to play the tile game and raise funds for YHS. After the event Candy received wonderful feedback from friends who promised to play again so she graciously hosted the second annual Mah Jongg for Mutts at Talking Rock Ranch in 2016 with 112 players raising $3,200 for YHS homeless pets! Next year’s Mah Jongg for Mutts, will be held on August 30, 2017 (register by emailing email@example.com), and is highly anticipated. Hearing about the success of this event inspired YHS supporter Angela Ditch to came up with another great fundraiser she fittingly named “Cribbage for Critters”. The event was held on February 6, at Prescott Country Club and featured Valentine’s Day decorations, delicious treats, and, of course, the game of Cribbage. Twenty people came together to play cribbage for our cause raising $200 for homeless pets. We are confident the next Cribbage for Critters will be even more successful, and will be announcing the date soon. If Cribbage or Mah Jongg aren’t your thing, but helping our animal shelter with a hobby you already enjoy sounds like fun (or perhaps you enjoy event planning), you can get involved! YHS is following Candy and Angela’s lead by asking game lovers to host their own “Games that Give” to benefit our furry friends. Several have already showed interest in ideas like “Poker for Pups” or “Bridge the Gap between Dogs and Cats.” We know when you find a fundraiser that is actually FUN, it’s an easy way for friends and family to support a cause. We look forward to playing more Games that Give in the future! For more information on hosting a fundraiser please contact YHS at 928-445-2666 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Volunteer of the Quarter: Nancy Scott
Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) is lucky enough to have an extremely dedicated group of core volunteers who show up to help almost every day. One of those amazing volunteers is Nancy Scott. With 7 years of volunteering under her belt, Nancy is invaluable to our organization. From walking dogs, in both the Adoptions Center and the Lost & Found Pet Center, to creating wonderful videos highlighting special pups, she is making a big difference for our homeless pets. Nancy’s passion for animals began in Iowa, where she was born and raised. She would take care of all the wandering cats and dogs that found their way to her home. Before moving to Prescott, Nancy and her husband lived in Southern California. Nancy found it hard to leave her family and friends in California and to relocate to Arizona where she didn’t know anyone. Adjusting to the move was a challenge. Then, one day, her husband showed her a newspaper article about YHS, which lead her to become a volunteer. Nancy said this about the experience of moving here, “So, if I wanted my life to get better, here was the opportunity! And volunteering at the shelter is where I made my first Prescott friend. I learned that to have a friend, you have to be a friend! I made many new friends here!” Our shelter pets are lucky to have found a friend in Nancy, that is for certain. You can see Nancy’s volunteer talents first-hand on Yavapai Humane Society’s YouTube channel and Facebook page where her wonderful videos featuring shelter dogs are posted. Nancy’s videos are instrumental in getting many animals adopted, because if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be two thousand! She edits these videos herself; adding the music and making sure it’s just right before publishing. Making these videos is one of her favorite things to do for the shelter. When she is relaxing at home, What Yavapai Humane Nancy enjoys quilting and cross-stitching. When her two resSociety Means to Us cued Grey Hounds aren’t demanding her attention that is! By Angela Ditch Nancy, we are so lucky and grateful to have you on the “Cribbage for Critters” organizer team—the animals are so fortunate to have you as their voice to the world! Volunteerism ...
