YHS history in perspective YHS celebrated its 42nd Anniversary this past March 20th with the unveiling of a plaque recognizing the individuals whose vision a generation ago is largely responsible for the YHS of today. The Good Book teaches us to “not despise the day of small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin.” Which begs the question, how much more must He rejoice when he sees the work flourishing? For decades our community was saddled with a reputation for animal cruelty. In 1935 the City of Prescott was declared the most inhumane city in the United States. A title that went largely unchallenged until a group of people decided to do something about it in 1972. Albert Einstein said “the world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.” Our founders were among that rare breed of individuals who refused to accept evil but instead did something about it.

Sir Isaac Newton once penned a response to an admirer’s gushing praise of his genius explaining that his accomplishments were simply the result of “standing on the shoulders of giants.” It is on the shoulders of giants that we are now perched. Over the past 3 years YHS achieved what many thought was impossible, the elimination of killing as a method for controlling pet overpopulation. Today, our community is the safest in the United States for companion pets – thanks to the giants who set it all into motion 42 years ago, in the day of small beginnings. In many ways, YHS is in a similar day of “small beginnings” today. We have many innovative life-saving programs in the works. Forty years from now our children and grandchildren will remember the work we supported today. Please help YHS with a generous donation and/or mention YHS in your Planned Giving to make sure you are part of this life affirming legacy.

Copper’s Happy Tail Walk down any hall, into any office, through any medical room, exercise yard or kennel on our campus and you will find every single veterinarian, volunteer and employee working toward the same goal—to place more pets into more loving homes. Copper was no exception. When Doug and Barb Soderberg fell in love with Copper in our Pet Adoption Center, they had no idea about the background of the 3-year-old female hound. This beautiful dog was the beloved pet of one of the fallen 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who perished in the Yarnell Hill wildfire on June 30. When Copper came to YHS, we felt a special responsibility to remember and honor our fallen heroes and their oath to protect our community. Out of respect for Copper’s deceased owner, we screened potential adopters not mentioning her history out of concern a potential adopter would adopt for the wrong reasons. Copper in her new home.
The Soderbergs were looking for a furry friend to add to their family when they saw Copper’s photo on our website. They immediately knew she was the dog for them. They came to meet Copper and quickly discovered they were a perfect fit. It was only then that our adoption counselor revealed Copper’s special story to the Soderbergs, who were moved by Copper’s story. At some point her fallen Hotshot had taught her to shake, and as Copper prepared to head to her new home, she gave us one last “salute” by placing her paw in our hand upon the command of her new owners. Copper is now living a dog’s dream and resides on 75 acres—plenty of room to run, hike and play—a life we know her hero would want for her. In loving memory of our community’s never-forgotten fallen 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots.

Crackles journey from hurt to home Not all pets that come to YHS come from a place of love and compassion. When Crackle, a four-month-old kitten was brought to our care, he was found in a parking lot confined in a taped box. Crackle was injured, scared and hungry. However, he received the treatment and care he so deserved and needed. And, things are looking up for this adorable kitten – Crackle is healthy and happy and has found his forever home! YHS continues to help animals like Crackle get the love and care they need.

Feasting on Kindness The Yavapai Humane Society is more than just a great place for homeless pets to find families. It’s also a place that helps keep pets and their families together. The YHS Safety Net Program’s Community Pet Food Bank is open to qualifying families thru a partnership with Catholic Charities. Free dog and cat food is available to people having trouble feeding their pets. Tough financial times is a common reason for people surrendering their beloved pets to YHS. The Pet Food Pantry at YHS relies upon community donations of cat and dog food. The pantry helps save the lives of pets in shelters by keeping new ones from arriving, allowing them instead to remain happy and loved at home.
And it’s all thanks to your kindness.
Leaving your legacy Members of our Legacy Circle ensure the mission of the Yavapai Humane Society to help thousands of animals in perpetuity. Walk for the Animals
2014 Walk for the Animals
YHS Braves the Storm and Raises $50,000 If you were at this year’s 3rd annual Walk for the Animals, it is an event you are likely never to forget. While the day will go down infamously in YHS history for its gale-force winds, punishing hail, and bone-chilling rain, our shelter’s life-saving programs were incredibly supported by our community to the tune of over $50,000. While the weather was not on our side, pet lovers clearly were. This year saw a 19% increase in donations raised to benefit YHS and the care it provides for animals in need in this community, up from $42,000 in 2013. Nearly 430 participants were registered for the event, and some made an appearance even though the storm raged on. To celebrate with the friends of YHS, and it’s supportive vendors and sponsors, we partnered with PetSmart of Prescott during its National Adoption Weekend on May 4 to host a Walk for the Animals make-up day. YHS featured face painting for the kids, a photo booth to capture memories of beloved pets, refreshments and entertainment. In addition, the event presented the new Magic 99.1 Strut Your Mutt Contest where people and their pets competed in the following categories: Best Trick, Costume and Owner-Look-a-Like.
We are incredibly grateful for our Walk sponsors who helped make this event and our year-round life-saving programs possible!
With the help of our sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and participants, we recovered from the storm of 2014, raised over $50,000 for the animals, and celebrated with the pet lovers in our community! A special thanks to our most successful fundraising individuals and teams who garnered donations that will better the lives of our communities dogs and cats, and to our tenacious volunteers who faced the inclement weather with us on April 26. As each year passes, the Walk for the Animals brings essential funding for our organization, and this year proved to do just that! We are grateful for the community and their love of animals for such a “PAWsome” day; this would not be possible without you!
To view photos and a recap of the event visit www.yavapaihumane.org/walk.
Save money & lives at YHS Thrift Store There will soon be a new place to save both money and lives when YHS opens its new thrift location in late August. The 7,500 square-foot store is located at 1601 Iron Springs Rd in Prescott. The new store continues YHS strategic plan to diversify the organization’s revenue streams. By 2015, the store is expected to generate $300,000 a year in net revenue to help save the lives of homeless animals. We need your help filling the store with plenty of furniture, clothes and household items. If you have new or gently used items you’d like to donate to help our pets, we’ll fetch! Call 928.445.5668 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a pickup. We’re also looking for volunteers to help staff the store. To volunteer, call 928.445.2666.
