Music Magazine Analysis
First Music Magazine Cover Analysis Masthead Main Image Is a different colour to the rest of the magazine makes it stand out, makes the masthead look bold and helps identify the magazine
Main Cover Line
The main cover line usually tends to be the second most largest text on the music magazine front cover as it is usually meant to stand out. The main mast head is usually the most important/most interesting te4ct on the front cover that tends to lead you into buying the magazine.
The cover lines share the same font and colour. The colour works effectively with the whole magazine as it the colours work well with the masthead and the model man. All the colours contrast meaning the magazine doesn't look overloaded with different colours that don’t go well with each other.
The main image is a man. The man has a very serious face which could suggest that the magazines target market is adults aged around 19-25 as they are seen more serious and more stern with music than teenagers aged 14-19 as they might associate a music with someone/something compared to teenagers who won’t.
A magazine must always make sure it has a barcode on it, so that it can be scanned on the till by the staff at the super market eg: Tesco etc. usually on magazines, barcodes tend to have on top or bellow them the price of the magazine. In this magazine we can see that the price of the magazine is on top of the barcode, because all magazines tend to follow this rule it is easy to look for how much the magazine is worth. Making is easier for people who want to buy it as it means they don’t have to look for the price all over the magazine front cover.
MASTHEAD A masthead is the title that is usually in bold font to stand out from all the other information on the page. The masthead is what is meant to be the most bold and eyecatching design on the front cover. A masthead identifies the magazine. This is a benefit as the masthead makes each music magazine or magazines in general unique and not the same, which means all magazines can be different through the masthead as some of the stories and news will be very similar to other music magazine rivals. . The font size is usually bigger than the cover lines on the front cover. The colour used for the mast head is usually a different colour in contrast to the colours used for the cover lines. This is because the mast head of the magazine front cover needs to stand out as this is what represents and makes each magazine unique. The masthead colour must coordinate with the image being presented on the front cover. One of the first things presented on the magazine cover that draws the target market after the image on the front cover is the masthead. In many cases by looking at the masthead you can tell what the magazines target market is. Whether it is teenagers, children, men, women or old people. The masthead also tells the audience what the mood of the magazine is, whether is formal or informal and in this case for the guitar magazine the masthead is very informal suggesting the target market may be teenagers or children’s music magazine. This is shown because of the use of colour and the font.
Main Cover Lines
A cover line summaries the most interesting feature on the magazine on what is the most interesting article which is inside the magazine that will draw their target audience attention and to make sure the target audience buys the magazine because they want to find out more information on the story. Cover lines tend to use interesting and catchy words to in a bold font (sometimes a different front to the other cover lines) or sometimes has the same font but just different size fonts are used. For example in the cover lines shown above we can see that the letter 100 is put into a bigger font than the bellow information of ‘greatest performances’ dragging the readers attention to see what is associated with the numbers 100. The words ‘greatest performance’ drags the audiences’ attention to make the reader want to open the magazine and read about what is the latest hits and what is the popular trends for music. The main cover line purpose is to be appealing to the magazines target market making sure that the specific information for that target group is being given what the target market is looking for. In this case the target market will be young teenagers where trends and popularity tends to matter most for males and females aged around 14-21 years.
Second Music Magazine Analysis Models The model used for this magazine front cover are used to the fullest ability as they have been used very effectively because of the effect they have upon the models. This is because of the fact that the models look like they are coming out at you. Which makes the audience feel as if the models are standing right next to them, because the models seem like they are coming out at you it makes the magazine look 3D which could have an overall positive effect as it makes the audience feel like the models are standing right in front of them.
Rule of Three
NME OASIS has not followed the rule of three. When I begin to make my magazine front cover I will make sure that I have followed the rule of three. The role of three is when the magazine has to make sure they leave either the left or right hand side empty when planning and making the image fit onto the front cover as the space left will be used for the cover lines.
The Colours being used on the Magazine Cover Colour- Red
The jumper that one of the models are wearing contrasts very well with the colours used on the overall magazine (red). The colour red is a very eye catchy and attractive colour because it is used in different parts of the magazine you become attracted to those places more than the places where black and white colours are being used at. The model who’s wearing a red jumper has a serious face showing that the magazine takes music very seriously as it is making sure it gives out the message that the magazine doesn’t use any comedy. You can tell this just from the facial expressions of both the models
All of the colours used on the front cover of this magazine go well with each other. This means all the colours contrast each other having a good effect on the overall magazine meaning it could have a positive effect on the target audience as the colours all go well and could represent professionalism of the magazine makers/editor.
Inspiration This magazine cover has inspired me to use these three colours red, white and black. When viewing this magazine I found the magazine stood out from the rest of the magazines which used the colours orange and yellow or red and blue etc (random colours together) because of the way the colours of the magazine have been perfectly picked out and made sure they are spread around the magazine front cover evenly which made the magazine have a noble impression when I saw it. This magazine has given me some inspiriting ideas on what colours to pick and how to lay out my magazine in a well fashion because this magazine was such a success in making sure I viewed it and read all the cover lines to see whether the stories where what I'm interested in. Another reason why this magazine has inspired me is because of both models facial expressions. The model wearing red looks like he’s angry in comparison with the model wearing black. The model wearing black looks very nervous and tense. Because the front cover has two models with that type of expression on their face it makes you wonder as an audience why they have such serious faces if it’s a music magazine in comparison to a magazine such as closer or sugar which then automatically makes you read the cover lines to see whether there is a story linked to the way they approach themselves on the magazine (about to fight). This overall helps the audience become more engaged and want to buy the magazine because it looks more serious than other magazine because of its use of colours and facial expressions used effectively. This is something that I will make sure to involve in my magazine as I found out those two reasons where the main points as to why I chose to analyse the front cover. However, if I do use this magazine to inspire me when making my front cover I need to take into notice the fact that they haven't used rule of three. Which could lead to a lack of professionalism but overall I will use this front cover to base some of my ideas around it but not all as I will use other magazines and what they succeeded on top of this one.
Third Music Magazine Analysis Main image
The target market for this magazine I am guessing is 14-19 year olds because the impression the female model gives of. The way she is posing doesn’t make the magazine look formal enough for it to be sold to adults. The colour of her hair makes the whole magazine main image stand out because it is a bright colour which is eye catchy for teenagers . Another reason why the target market of this magazine is low is because the model being used is the same age as people who the magazine is aimed at. This could mean it is putting the model into the audience shoes because she is on the front cover trying to promote and sell the magazine. It could give of the impression that the viewer of the magazine and the model share some common interests because they are around the same age (things such as music and fashion etc).
This mast head uses very ‘funky’ fonts which could suggest its target market being 14-19 year olds. As a magazine with that type of font and colour scheme usually tends to be aimed at a low age group because its not seen as formal or something that a 32 year old would buy.
Cover line Different colour being used to emphasise most important information that should be read. (In yellow)
STRAPLINE A strapline is headline is a set of text that is in smaller font and usually located on bottom of the magazine or sometimes at the top of the magazine. But in this case it was located at the bottom of the magazine. The strapline drags the audience attention because it is in the colour box bright pink meaning naturally someone's direct attention will be put on the box because of the bright colour being used. Because the colour is pink this could suggest that the magazine is aimed at female audiences because usually when something is targeted at female the colours frequently used are pink, purple etc all of the common colours used for a female audience. The strapline has a ‘PLUS!’ encouraging people to view the strapline and to read the information that could give the audience another incentive to buy the magazine. The word plus is catchy meaning it makes the audience want to know more about what the magazine has to offer and the different information it still has for the female audience. Another reason that the strapline will draw the audiences attention is because of the use of capital letters being used in the strapline, showing that the information is important and should be viewed by the target audience because usually information that is in capital letters is usually information that effects the reader in some way. A strapline can also be seen as a way of summing up an important set of information in the easiest possible way having a simple effect on the reader and not wasting the readers time as if the strapline was a long paragraph of information the reader will not sit in a shop reading big chunks of information this is why is it most suitable for audience as is it simple and quick information to grab on to .
Kicker A kicker is the story designed to stand out from all of the information on the magazine. The kicker usually advertises what the interview or sums it up on interesting and catchy words. In this kicker there is a contrast in two different colours, pink and white. The use of two different colours is beneficial as it helps the text stand out but if the colours don’t go together then it can make the target audience feel put off about the amount of colures being used and may decide not to buy the magazine because it looks unprofessional and may think that the whole magazine is unprofessional. This is why as a ‘magazine maker’ I need to make sure that all the colours go well and contrast each other and don’t make the page look overloaded with different colours as this could make the magazine look childish and looking childish is not a professional way for the magazine to be created and to be shown and sold in shops as in contrast other magazine will only use a maximum of two colours so that they make sure they do not use too many colours on the magazine front cover. This will then mean that the magazine is not overload with different colours just two colours that respond well with each other in the most effective way. Furthermore having more than two colours can make the magazine look very informal with the layout at the designs used on the front cover. The font in this kicker is simple and plain it doesn’t use very complicated text fonts meaning it is easy to read even though it is on an angle. The kicker is also in capital letters which makes the information stand out from the cover lines on the magazine and makes the reader know that the information they are reading is important
Fourth Music Magazine Analysis Masthead In this magazine the mast head doesn’t stand out from the other information on the front cover. When making my magazine front cover I will make sure that the mast head stands out from any other text on the magazine front cover, because a mast head is what identifies you from the rest of the magazines.
Banner The banner uses the word plus that encourages the audience to read the banner because they could be entitled to something free or what would interest them. The word ‘plus’ is in a different colour to help it stand out from the rest of the information presented on the banner.
Main image The photo is the same as the colour scheme meaning it blends in with the font colour scheme used on the magazine. White, grey and red all suit each other meaning the magazine gives off a progressive impression to the audience
The kicker is in a bold font which makes it stand out from the rest of the information on the magazine front cover apart from the mast head. when I make my magazine cover and have an important message that I feel the audience should know about I will use it in a different colour, font and font size to help it stand out from a far distance.
