YASHUA SANCTUARY E V E RY G I R L C O U N T S
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James Chapter 1 Verse 27
ashua Sanctuary Children’s Home was established on 1st June 2004 . Yashua Sanctuary is a Christian organisation dedicated to saving new born baby girls that are either abandoned or will die because of ancient prejudices that still exist in parts of India.
The practice is excused and condoned on many grounds. Girls are seen as nothing more than a drain on a family’s resources. The first daughter is allowed to live because soon she will assume household chores. But the chance of life for a second or third daughter diminishes drastically.
According to some studies, more than 16 million baby girls a year in India are killed by their mothers or by village midwives called dayans. Female infanticide in India does not affect the upper or middle classes. But among the poor, especially in backward rural areas, female infanticide is still commonplace.
A women’s life is dominated by rituals which involve the distribution of money and gifts. A family’s honour rests on its ability to conduct ceremonies appropriately, including, of course, the dowry and wedding. A prospective groom can typically demand a dowry equivalent to one years salary, along with gifts such as gold, household goods and, perhaps, a vehicle. Without the dowry there is no marriage.
Hannah Ellora * Hannah, Leela, Ellora and Maya were born in rural Hyderabad and are now living at Yashua Sanctuary with other girls. Their start to life was typical of many girls that are unwanted. Without intervention they would have been killed at birth or died soon after. We started to build relationships with tribal leaders and after many months they eventually agreed to contact us when a baby girl had been born and was unwanted. Money was immediately sent to provide food, until the child could
Annesha be collected. By the time we had received the children they were severely malnourished and very weak due to lack of care. *Annesha was the first child we received. Born illegitimate, Annesha’s father was intent on sacrificing her to his god. The mother went into hiding until the child was born and then was desperate to see her child given a secure home. *All names changed to protect identity.
