WHO WE ARE...

Chartered on May 2009 as IPM Toastmasters Club Charter President Mr. Rohitha Amarapala

CLUB MISSION “We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self confidence and personal growth”

CIPM Toastmasters Club is a community club and leads into bringing individuals on-board with diverse backgrounds with the aspiration of taking the club into greater heights alongside their personal & professional development.

The club continues to build up and strengthen member engagement and networking by organizing themed meetings, joint meetings, fun -filled outdoor meetings and through participation in events organized by the areas,divisions, district and beyond.

MESSAGE BY THE PRESIDENT & THE EDITOR

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pride as the President of the CIPM Toastmasters Club to launch the second Club Newsletter.

“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow” was a quote from Anthony J. D’Angelo.

I, as an individual strongly believe that Toastmasters is a platform which provides opportunities to learn and grow.

With the new normal, we as a club have adapted to the situation. Each individual has contributed collectively to take the club to greater heights. As an experienced club we always want to have quality meetings, while empowering individuals to become effective communicators and leaders.

In this newsletter, we have showcased the activities of our club during the third quarter of the year, 2021/2022 which assisted our members to learn and grow. We had been able to have interesting themed meetings, joint meetings and educational sessions. Our members were able to create a bond among each other which will last beyond Toastmasters.

An appreciation for all EXCO members for doing an excellent job with their respective roles, a special appreciation to the VPPR and the team for their commitment made to release the Club Newsletter.

Dear members, the true essence of Toastmasters comes when each individual takes every opportunity that comes in their way. Therefore, grab every opportunity and grow yourself better than yesterday. If you are a stakeholder reading this newsletter, come and visit the club, we assure that you will learn a lot with various moments of enjoyment.

Toastmasters is not just all about speaking and leadership skills. It helps you enhance your writing, creativity and other hidden potentials. The name Blossom bloomed from our last year's newsletter yet the biggest difference this year is that it is all about going back to our physical meetings with a lot of fun-filled activities. This quarter is where all members enjoy meeting each other physically.

Anyone who reads this newsletter will gain knowledge about the club, the Educational meetings we had, our member achievements and much more exciting things which will help you to gain more knowledge and become a better future leader tomorrow.

Also this enriches with articles by our own very talented members who have contributed to make this newsletter a splendid masterpiece. I would love to thank my Executive Committee Members, PR Advisors, PR Sub Committee and each and every member who took their valuable time to help me out.

I hope you will enjoy and gain more insights about the club and if you are a non -toastmaster feel free to join our club meetings because the experience is worth it.

A TRIBUTE TO CIPM

In 2009, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (then called IPM) established the CIPM Toastmasters initiated by Mr. Rohitha Amarapala, Charter President of the club and a past President of CIPM. This establishment was in order to develop the public speaking and leadership skills of the members of CIPM and its stakeholders. CIPM Toastmasters club grew stronger as years passed by and the institute had always been a pillar of strength by assisting in all requirements whenever needed.

We are highly grateful for the recognition provided by the Institute for CIPM Toastmasters Club in their social media pages, promoting our club among students and members. This indeed had resulted in many students and members joining our Toastmasters family. Recently, we are happy to announce that CIPM Sri Lanka institute is the Winner - Educational Services Sector at National Business Excellence Awards 2021 organized by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka held at BMICH on 22nd March 2022.

Further, CIPM Toastmasters Club contributes to the society by conducting the CIPM Gavel club which also enables the members of CIPM to enroll their children to nurture them as future leaders; and by conducting the annual speechcraft program as well. The speech craft program gives the students and any individual an interesting opportunity to develop their public speaking skills and to eradicate their stage fear within a short period of time. In all these activities conducted, the logistical requirements provided by CIPM played a major role in the smooth functioning of all these activities.

CIPM Toastmasters club created a reputation to the “CIPM” brand name by achieving the President's Distinguished Club award for the 10th consecutive year and winning the Golden Club award for the year 2020/2021. We also carried the CIPM flag to greater heights by representing in Area Level, Division Level and District Level through leadership roles and contests.

Thank You CIPM for your continuous support throughout our journey! We’re looking forward to continuing this relationship and strengthening our bond further for years to come!

2020 - The decade had certainly started with new normal and the most uttered quote during the pandemic was “Unmute yourself”.

We have heard enough, and still do.

It was not only in the online meetings but also in this unprecedented period in all areas of life.

Unmute reveals the reality of our condition.

Factors such as fear of judgement, self-doubt, embarrassing moments, aligning with social expectations, or maintaining dominance would restrict own self-expression and engage in self-silencing. Breaking this fear might have a chance of connecting with each other, sharing the thoughts and ideas with the society, receiving positive feedback, or even making good progress.

With mute enabled it’s been communicated that we are not ready for good vibes and energy. An individual’s potential is brought out when he or she is ready to communicate. Its always good to hear from others and pull together an engaged forum. Our presence to an audience of any meeting counts an opportunity and nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity. If the opening is beyond your capacity to handle, make sure to seek out for help. By doing so at least it would lead to a pleasant piece of dream comes true in life.

MAJOR NEGATIVE BARRIERS OF OUR MIND ARE: -

It cannot be easily wiped out without constant exercise of these three mantras in our communication, Get organized - Practice well Express clearly. Unless we stand upon on our feet, a foundation for ourselves will never be created because we are in the era of moving from conversations to solutions. Be patient and prepared well enough to take the first step of self-growth which is unmuting yourself. You need to be heard. .

TM THULANI PASQUAL The wait was over. There came a day that we could finally meet physically again. CIPM toastmasters switched back to physical meetings from online meetings under the theme of MUSIC, as the situation of the country being better in terms of the global pandemic.

When our VP Education called out the members to take up roles for the physical meeting week before, everyone was so excited to fill in the roles. Members were thrilled to meet each other finally. I got the golden opportunity to become the toastmaster of the day in the first physical meeting after the series of online meetings. I was so excited to play the role and as the toastmaster of the day I had a huge responsibility to keep the excitement levels so high throughout the meeting. Getting back to normal meetings of toastmasters club was all everyone needed. Even the guests of our club whom we met online got the chance to experience the real feeling of the procedure of an actual physical toastmasters meeting.

Having refreshments together and catching up with the members were more interesting than usual. Most members attended the meeting and the hall was full house. It enlightened the whole meeting. The meeting was very well planned by the executive committee and felt so much more lively than online meetings. All the segments of the toastmaster meeting was related to the theme of music and the members found it easy to understand each and every segment clearly.

The first segment which is the Round Robin Session had no interruptions at all. I know we all find it somewhat hard to do a smooth flowing round robin session in an online platform because of all the technical issues and third party disturbances. Switching back to physical meetings eradicated them all. The second segment showed a great difference when compared to online meetings. The prepared speakers had the chance to use the stage effectively and to connect with the audience more in physical meetings.

Therefore it was a huge plus point. The third and the last segment, the table topic session was a success too. The table topic speakers had the chance to engage in the session well without any technical issue that was caused in online meetings. They also had the chance to structure their speech while walking up to the stage. When compared to online meetings the evaluations of the members were much efficient and effective. Every role player, speaker and everyone who took part in the meeting did a very good job in the physical meeting.

The informal meeting we have after the toastmaster meeting was full of energy. Everyone was so busy talking, taking pictures and hanging around with each other. It was so good to see a hall full of happy faces.

We all had so much of fun and learned many new knowledge areas from the meeting that day. It was so good to be back at CIPM toastmaster physical meetings.

As per my personal opinion the meeting was so levelled up when compared to the online meetings we had.

I am so happy that we could finally conduct physical meetings and really hope we can continue doing so with the country’s situation.

TM ROHIINI GAMAGE " It was the middle of the Covid 19 lockdown. My fingers; itched to paint or create something - with the lack of paper and limited supplies water colours! " I used the backside of cardboard dried milk packets, which had grey hued background. Neighbors showered empty milk boxes, which would have been thrown out.

I experimented using a mixed medium of water colours plus crayons. I applied the necessary colours on a soft cloth and rubbed the colours separatly as background and foreground. The rest of the scenes were before hand in water colours. and let them dry. I was amazed by the results. I made canvas - stiffning raw cloth using white wall paint, sun drying the material and painting pictures with either fabric paint or oil paint.

Everybody encouraged me to talk. Even when my speech was ridiculous they said "you did well,
