COFCO Beijing Industrial Park Phase II Fangshan, Beijing, China Covering 20 hectares of land in the suburb of Beijing, the industrial park aims to be a new home to tens of health-related companies. A cosy environment of offices among gardens is needed. Phase I has been built already. The design of phase II ought to be related to phase I but still has its own identity. Formally, the proposed project extends the central axis from phase I and uses similar plants to create a natural feeling. Functionally, it provides a bright, lush space outside the office buildings, which makes it convenient for people to gather, relax, and chat with each other. In this project, I was responsible for designing underground courtyards and commercial courtyards, building SketchUp models, drawing analysis diagrams and perspectives, and making construction documents.

The underground courtyards are 5.85 meters deep. A retaining wall is transformed into a terrace to mitigate the height difference and to make the yard more spacious. With a giant screen hanging on the building, the place becomes an outdoor theatre.

Nature Courtyard Nature Courtyard exhibits ornamental grasses and perennials to mimic nature. Trees and bushes successfully separate communication space from surrounding buildings. Interaction Courtyard is designed to create networking opportunities for people. Thus many benches are welldisplayed to form small spaces for casual conversations.

Ningyuan County Botanic Garden Design for Bidding Yongzhou, Hunan, China Covering an area of 50.25 hectares, Ningyuan Botanic Garden is designed based on the concept of regional bamboo culture. Per the government's request, it was intended to be an integrated botanic garden, including the function of sightseeing, education, and exercises within a limited budget. The bidding was successful. I was in charge of the master plan, GIS analysis, some analysis diagrams, and perspectives.

This is a planting design in Lake Tahoe area. We chose a diverse range of plant materials which can withstand the cold weather and make the space vibrant as well. We took good care of the form of different patches, the edge of the lawn and the retaining walls during the design.

Landscape to Heal Champlin, Minnesota, US My Capstone Project is to build a healing garden system around Champlin Shores, an assisted living facility. Research shows that healing gardens for older people can effectively reduce their stress, develop an optimistic mood, lower blood pressure, and promote a more active lifestyle. However, not many assisted living centres have healing gardens and well-designed places and paths. I redesigned Champlin Shores by thinking of the entire site as a landscape for healing and designing a linked series of gardens, paths, and a place for gardening.

BACKGROUND The population of adults age 65 and over is overgrowing in America, as the Baby Boomer generation ages. Champlin Shores is an assisted living apartment located in Champlin, Minnesota. It is adjacent to a retirement community, which shares a pond with Champlin Shores in the backyard. The climate in Champlin city is similar to the Twin Cities'. From May to September, there is no snowfall, and the average temperatures are comfortable for people to go out. For the rest of the year, however, the residents will enjoy themselves inside the building viewing the garden.

DESIGN GOALS

A large paved parking lot is in front of the entrance.

• Create a series of linked gardens that will promote healing and wellness • Enhance opportunities for outdoor activities for residents, visitors, and staff at Champlin Shores

Green spaces are hard for people to use.

CONCEPT GENERATION

• Welcome the public to be involved in the garden, while separating the public from the private

Garden

• Build connections between the assisted living facility, the general neighbourhood, and retirement community

Sensory experiences in the garden can be uplifting or relaxing. The purpose of this sensory garden is to create the right nourishing outdoor environment for older adults. It is also a place for socialising.

2

OTHER HEALING STRATEGIES

1

More raised bed gardens are added in the memory care patio so that they can hold horticultural therapy activities for all 19 residents.

2

Participants of organised social horticulture activities in a garden have the highest sense of hopefulness. The design provides opportunities for social interaction as well as horticultural activities.

3

This playground is designed mostly for the residents’ grandchildren in assisted living, but children from the neighbourhood are also welcome. With the fountain in the playground acting as a noise screen, the residents will not be bothered by the use of the space.

Rainbow Trail is used as an exercise trail by older people. People from the neighbourhood are also welcome.

The purpose of building a labyrinth is to give the users opportunities to restore mental focus and to meditate. A unicursal labyrinth, which is one continuous path on a twodimensional plane, is a good fit for a healing garden. An utterly paved labyrinth can also become a perfect spot for older people to practice walking.

Public Garden has the function of a rain garden to detain stormwater. Pollinator-friendly plants are introduced to here.

A look from the gazebo. The gazebo gives people a good view of greenery and satisfies their needs of watching other people to relax, and at the same time, the raised level ensures their privacy.
