HOSTEL A N ETTA I Just 10 minutes on foot from the international airport in Ho Chi Minh City, “Hostel Anettai is a re-renovation project from a French colonial style villa that was once used as a cafe. Named after a Japanese word "Anettai" which means "sub-tropic", the minimally-designed boutique hostel with 28 beds provides unique stay that truly suits to toropical region and can be experienced only here.

To tal i nvo l vement In order to expand the field of profession, the architects were actively involved in all the process of creation, such as investment, site monitoring, material procurement, signage design, and facility operation. Therefore it was possible to pursue the quality of every aspect of design even within the tight budget. By limiting the intervention to the existing building to what is really needed and effective , the construction cost was minimized as little as 100 USD per sqm.

7

Cu r tai n The color and translucency of fabric, and combination with lighting are carefully examined with mock-up multiple times. The hanged steel curtain box is designed with minimum dimensions that can contain ready-made curtain rail and LED tape light.

8

Mater ial Pro cu rement and sel ec t i on In order to pursue beauty, functionality and cost performance, we chose to procure various materials by ourselves, such as lighting, bamboo sheet, plants for balcony, sanitary products, door accessories Etc. For the wooden furnitures, Urethan-coated MDF was used to reduce the cost. It is mostly used at bedhead, adding calm and elegant tone of color around the space.

9

Signage d esign and management We worked closely with the graphic design team on logo, font, and pictograms, and examined location/size/arrangement of them in the real space, monitored the on-site installation. The minimum and curvy design of typography resonates with the interior design that employs curvy geometry.

10

Con st r uct i on management We were intensively involved in the construction phase to monitor and coordinate multiple contractors for different items. Meanwhile, we also worked by ourselves, for whatever possible to be done by non-skilled amateur, such as wall paint on balcony, epoxy paint that is thoroughly applied onto existing tiles in the bathrooms, sticking film on glass and a closet.

I N TER M EDI ATOR o f LIGHT Rather than conventional elements around openings, curtain is treated as the intermediator of light, that filters, reflects, refracts, and texturizes light and determine the space. Two layers of curtain are installed in two private rooms and three dorm rooms. In principle, they draw spatial boundaries between beds and room’s periphery. The fabric is translucent when light sources are behind it, yet it turns opaque otherwise. It softly filters and blurs the shape of sunlight in the daytime, while creating an illusionary ambience with warm-colored light in the night. Unlike traditional combination of opaque and translucent curtains, the layered semi-opaque curtains achieves lightshielding effect just comfortable enough to sleep. This allowed users to control the brightness more sensitively and interactively in their own space.

Tropical Gard en the balcony is a precious common area overlooking the neighborhood with local vibes. Stainless steel cable was installed to create imaginary ceiling and walls with fabric-like geometry. It lets creepers grow onto its surface, serving as shading that reduces direct sunlight. Surrounded by tropical plants, this space has complementary relationship between interior space.

A LT E R N AT I V E f or H O S P I TA L I T Y DESIGN Due to booming demand of tourism in Vietnam, there are tremendous amount of city hotels who superficially copy the styles from other developed countries. They appears clean at first glance, yet providing guests with conventional spatial experience that could be generated anywhere else in the world. In this context, the most important aim of this project was to create a new and alternative experience where designers take maximum advantage of their profession for what really suits to the region.
