A NOTE FROM Y'ALL Dear friends, First and foremost, thank you - to our creators for their contributions, to our friends for all the work they put into the creation of this project, and to you, our reader, for taking a moment to appreciate everything that the Atlanta arts community is, and everything that we hope for it to be. A little background on this endeavor: this zine is the flagship project of a newly formed community arts accessibility organization called Y’ALL. Our mission is to connect established and emerging artists through the creation, promotion, and advocacy of accessible arts events within the Atlanta community. Through the creation of this zine, our desire is to promote body positivity and acceptance through drawing, painting, poetry, essays, photography - the list goes on. Before art, there is the body. Because of the body, there is art. Our relationship with this vessel is multifaceted. This body that creates, eats, sleeps, moves us from place to place. It is our inspiration and our greatest barrier, the instrument that creates the pieces that express that which we identify as “us”. Every single day, there are so many things to love about the space we occupy. All of this, and yet, hatred of the body is something that plagues many of us. The folds and curves, the bones and blemishes. We become our own greatest villain, clutching at ourselves in the mirror, wishing to exist differently. We underestimate the good we create in this world, by existing exactly as we are.

This zine is a celebration of the nooks and crannies, dimples and dips, gaps and markings, the ways our inner selves perceive our outer selves. This zine is a big, fat “YAWP” in the face of our own self doubt, a place where we have permission to talk and validate the things that we feel and, with any luck, feel less alone in our thoughts. It all has to begin somewhere -- so, for us, and for all y’all, we present Y'ALL: the Bodies Issue. All the best, Abbie Argo, Ryan Holtzen, Jake Van Valkenburg, and Chrysta Avers The Y'ALL Team

God Bruised my Brain and Broke my Mother's Heart by Ryan Holtzen (@ryanholtzen)

I had my first concussion when I was six years old. My head rang like a bell against the concrete, My mother only ten feet away, rinsing my helmet with The water hose. She wore an after-church floral sundress. It stuck to the roses as she ran to me. A little rip at the seam, A loose thread of shame, vulnerability as a mother— The child broken in the driveway. I felt dark and cold— Dull hum ringing in my skull, still soft and young. Heaven is real baby, don’t close your eyes, Don’t close your eyes.

I told myself I was not beautiful today. And the point is that I am a boy, and boys are not supposed to be beautiful or concerned about the terms and conditions of beauty. Anything to that song makes a boy vain. And so I am writing this because they told me not to ask questions I don’t want the answer to, so I am here telling you that I study the pages of my face every morning and take notes of all the blemishes pockmarks and spots that make my face mine. Like how age has begun to hang like teardrops underneath my eyes and how I have creases on my cheekbones and red dots that frame my neck. Like how people ask me if I am okay (I am doing just fine) because my eyes (they are big and brown) say I am soft severe and terrified and I tell them that’s just the way I look. I remember when you told me that I looked strange and I remember when you told me that you did not trust when you first met me because of my eyes and I still think about that even though we are close. I told myself I was not beautiful today and I want to ask you if am beautiful like you too and if you notice the blemishes pockmarks and spots but the point is that I am writing this because they told me not to ask questions I don’t want the answer to. And so I turn away. - Van Nowhere

"Untitled" by Andi Otto (@sleeping.b.e.a.u.t.i.e.s) When I am at my most vulnerable, my mind is elsewhere. I am thinking of the blankets on my body and the patterned marks it leaves on my skin, my inconsistent muscles that twitch and stiffen when she draws close. I am thinking of music, like a daft Orfeo. Guitar riffs climb up the walls and snare hits rattle the wood boards underneath our bed. Gentle bass hugs the soft lamplight and when I should be thinking of her, I recite lyrics to myself. When I take off my shirt, I am reminded of love’s vulnerabilities and how proximity is a killer. Memories of first love and worst love wash over me. I taste blue. Listen: I am trying to recognize my body next to yours. Next time, naked will remember now. Anyplace is today and anytime is here. You turn off the light. I touch the patterned marks the blanket leaves on my skin. - Van Nowhere
