Bed wetting, also known as Enuresis in the medical world, is a common problem that exists more than you might know. It happens with both adults and children behind closed doors because it is often seen as an embarrassing thing and people feel very alone with it. With children it is a developmental stage that is often outgrown although it can occur at different ages with each child. Bed-wetting is more common among boys than girls. A misconception about bed-wetting is that people who wet the bed are lazy and need to just straighten their act out. There are a multitude of factors which cause bed wetting. If you wet the bed when you were a child, than your own children have a higher probability of having bed wetting problems later in childhood than expected. Some of them include difficulty waking up from sleep, genetic factors as it can run in families, and slower development in the central nervous system. These children's systems have not caught up the rest of their bodies and as a result they cannot stop the urine flow while in their sleep. Hormonal problems can also cause bed-wetting. A hormone that regulates and slow urine production during the night, called anti-diuretics, may be lacking in the body. These are typical causes if the problem is continuous and has never been resolved. Problems in the body such as urinary tract infections which are temporary may also cause sudden bed wetting. If a bed wetting problem occurs out of nowhere, than an illness such as a urinary tract infection may be the root of the problem. Constipation has been considered as another cause of sudden bed wetting. Another problem which is not always identified is stress. If a big event occurs in life such as a new member of the family, a change in schools, or a big move a child may have an adjustment period and bed wetting may be involved in that. Bladder control is not always achieved as early as parents wish it would happen. Many parents get frustrated because they feel that children should be able to control their bladders at night as soon as they potty train which is as young as two. Most parents do not know that the age which bladder control is most developed and finished is at six. Medical intervention is usually not used until age seven. If your child has a bed-wetting problem before then time is usually the main tool to stopping it. It is estimated that approximately thirteen percent of six year olds wet the bed and five percent are still wetting the bed at age ten. Children should not be shamed if they have bed wetting problems. The best thing parents can do is support their children and let them know they are there for them. They need to know that they are not alone in it and eventually the problem will be resolved. Patience is key when handling children's bed wetting issues.
