Using a stroller in a subway station has been a longstanding problem for many young parents in New York City. This is one of the most notable and difficult issue young parents experience and puts a mobility barrier between them and their city. As an industrial designer, my role is to design a product that can change user behavior and lead to a better experience.

A City With An Unfriendly System Using strollers in a subway station has been a long standing problem for many young parents in New York City. The most challenging issue is to climb up and down the stairs; therefore, they commonly have to seek help from other passengers to get through the subway system. Another common problem is, due to its size, the stroller usually occupies too much space in the train and blocks the entrance.

According to the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority), average weekday ridership was 5.6 million in 2014, and only 85 among total 469 stations were accessible with elevators. Also, the MTAâ€™s safety rules even state that people are not allowed to take an unfolded stroller on a bus.

Scenario Break Down This scenario was illustrated to present every keyframe and issue that would happen while a city parent taking the New York City subway.
A young mother encountered the entrance where she had to wait for someoneâ€™s help to carry the stroller through the staircase.
Before entering the gate, she notified the subway staff to open the door for her.
Then the stroller was lifted up to cross over a gap between the train and the platform while boarding.
After finally sitting in the train, she worried the stroller might take too much space and block the entrance for other passengers.
And the same issues appeared again when she got off and returned to the ground.

Difference Between Carriers And Strollers
There are strollers tailored for certain customers to fit into different lifestyles such as the standard-sized stroller and the lightweight stroller. Different types of baby carriers were included and positioned based on the levels of agility and how much physical effort that are required from the parent. While using a baby LESS PHYSICAL EFFORT carrier, one is more agile and able to move through different terrains, like climbing stairs or even hiking, but requires more physical effort. In comparison, a stroller allows one to almost effortlessly walk for a longer duration but it is more clumsy to maneuver.

Design Development +
I started to look at the average measurements of humans and how the stroller and carrier related to the human body on three dimensions.
Human Scale Study
I focused on the mechanism that was related to size-scaling including the rotational hinge, adjustable locking hinge, and retractable self-locking mechanism.

A recent study concluded that a backpack load of 30% body weight was recommended for a female during prolonged walking. I studied the average weight of the young female and the baby whose age is 12 to 36 months. The total weight of a stroller with baby is less than the suggested percentage of a female body weight.
Baby Carrier Test
Another concern was how the stroller attaches on humanâ€™s body. Soft materials was my primary focus including straps, webbing belt, silicone, rubber sleeve and high-density foam.
Material Exploration Quick Prototype
To make the transformation more intuitive, I adopted the retractable self-locking mechanism, commonly found in suitcase design.
I was inspired by the beer vendors who frequently climbed the stairs with a vending tray carrying gallons of beer on the shoulders.
I worked closely with 3d printing industries. Functional mechanisms and precision were tested and modified efficiently.

is an urban-friendly stroller that allows young parents to independently adapt to the various, mass-transit situations in the city. It is designed to be easily transformed from a stroller to a baby carrier depending on different scenarios, to better align with a userâ€™s need.
A Carriable Stroller Stroll Up differs from the many attempts to create a wheeled product that climbs the stairs. I started from the userâ€™s perspective, creating the design by extracting the strengths of two conventional products, combining them with a creative yet practical approach. The handle is designed to fit humanâ€™s shoulder and covered with flexible, high-density foam that can provide comfortability while being carried.

Stroll While Extended Due to its auto-locking retractable mechanism on the handle and the frame, users are able to easily transform Stroll Up and adapt to multiple applications - by simply pushing the button to unlock the mechanism, and extending or retracting the structure. When a young mother and herr baby are going on a trip, Stroll Up can be used as a full-size stroller on flat ground when the handle and the frame are extended.

Climb The Stairs
Stroll Up also saves much space in the train. While sitting in the train, Stroll Up allows the user to rest the stroller on oneâ€™s laps without blocking other passengers.
The user compresses Stroll Up into a carrier and easily walks up and down the steps and over varying levels in the underground subway system.
DREMEL RE A FORM DEVELOPED TO FIT IN ANY HOLDING SCENARIO

Dremel-Re is a new rotary-tool design. I started this project from operating the tool and collecting information from the market in order to receive a thorough understanding. Based on that, I was able to create a handy rotary-tool that is hassle-free and ergonomic to hold.
How does Dremel work? The Current Dremel
Dremel is a convenient rotary tool, commonly used in home repairing situation due to its versatile, interchangeable bit. To realize Dremel better, I started from operating the current model. I came up with a list of good and down sides of Dremel:
– Light weight – Handy size – Variable speed – Reasonable price
– Difficult to hold – Limited size of bit – Dust or debris are easily blown on your face while sanding
Collect User Review Another good way to gain more information is to collect reviews from online seller. I created a matrix to show the frequency of each nagative review from the online dealers. This analysis helped me recognize the priority of the product features and possible improvement. The top three negative user opinions are poor hand-grip design, easily overheated and bad product quality. D

WEDGE CHAIR A NEW APPROACH TO CONSTRUCTING FURNITURE

Wedge chair is a lounge furniture inspired by brilliantly designed objects that commonly exist in life but with little people’s attention. I developed a simple wedge behind the back as the main joint and the curved seat derived from traditional eaves of Taiwanese architecture.

Cultural Elements I started this project from looking at brilliantly designed objects that commonly exist in life but people barely notice it. My main inspiration came from the wedge commonly used as door stoppers or wood joints. As for overall proportion and gesture, I referred to the extended eaves derived from traditional Taiwanese architecture. My goal was to incorporate these elements and use the wedge as a new approach to construct a chair both elegantly and ergonomically.
Easy To Re-assemble During my academic and working years, I am used to moving from one place to another. But moving furniture can be troublesome because it was either too bulky to move or too complex to take it apart and re-assemble. Furthermore, it was likely that some of the parts would be lost while transporting. Therefore, I wanted to design a furniture that is easy to build and transport.

Variation With Color And Comfy Felt The thick and colored felt not only gives the user extra comfort with padded back and seat, but also adds variable colored scents to the neutral wood surface.
No Worries Of Losing Joint The structure was locked and reinforced by a wedge-shaped joint behind the back. I chose 3D printed elastic plastic as the material rather than wood because a wood joint had no flexibility and would be worn out easily. Using flexible material allowed me to break the chair down and re-assemble it as many times as possible. Sometimes during moving users might lose the parts. Now with the help of 3D printing technique, users can print out their wedge joint from the online database with precise dimension and customized color.

Mallard is designed for personal use. The compact volume is capable of serving essential need of boiling water and occupying fewer space. This project was conducted through a series of research on usability, proportion and aesthetics in order to achieve a compact yet elegant electric kettle.
How to use an electric kettle? Define Function List Electric kettles differ from the conventional kettles that are heated on the stove. Its heating plate located at the bottom of the kettle transforms the electricity into heat and then boil the water. I started this project from understanding the order of the function:
Sub-function: Refill the kettle with water
Main Function: Boil the water
Handle Study To operate the electric kettle, the handle plays a crucial role on usability. To understand which handle was better than the others, I categorized different handle types from the current market. And by making them, I was able to have a quick experience about what type of the handle were easier to hold and pour.
Sub-function: Pour the water
Problem Discovered Through studying of scenarios, I identified a problem of spout while refilling the kettle. With a smaller sink, if the spout of the kettle is parallel to the ground, users tend to bend their wrist and use the short edge of the kettle in order to squeeze it into the sink and then rotate it to catch the water.
The sink is too small for the kettle.
The user tries to squeeze the kettle with the shorter edge.
Then the user bends or rotates the wrist to catch the water.
An Upward Spout I raised up the angle between the spout and the body, so that the spout was not parallel to the ground while the kettle still kept its balance. With the aid of a sharper angle between the spout and the vessel, users can refill the kettle in one movement without bending or rotating their wrist. The oval shape of the vessel also helps avoiding the kettle hitting the sink.

Heating Indicator The led indicator is hidden inside of the vessel sleeve. When the kettle is being heated, a subtle glow of light serves as a visual indicator.

In Taiwan, tea industry has been a significant business for decades. More than 50% of population drink tea everyday. The overall process from tea agriculture to consumption forms an essential part of our life. I try to extend this scenario with my idea – Tea Caddy, making this process become a personal experience of tea.
A personal brewing teaware
Cross-cultural Preserver Tea caddies are commonly used in both Eastern and Western culture. Due to its long life span and ease of fabrication, metal has been the most sustainable material to preserve the tea.
Metal cans are adopted worldwide, often being used for preserving tea or dry seeds. Stainless steel, aluminum, and copper are the most common materials for these caddies. Tea drinking is an essential part of our life as same as coffee in the Western culture. Therefore, I dreamed an idea to add a brewing feature onto this personal teaware for not only preserving the tea but also being used as a brewing utensil to complete the tea-drinking scenario.

Pamphlet was the very first electronic product that I conducted from the concept to the prototype phase while in Compal Electronics. In order to reach the needs of target customers and cost’s limitation, we provided an overall solution from target research to material/color definitions, combined with effective mechanical layout.
Referring to how we read a book
Hardware Specifications + 7-inch multi-touch screen + 16 GB storage + 3G/ WIFI + USB & SD card reader built in This project was targeting young consumers who pursue the convenience brought by advanced technology. With the passion and curiosity to fashion and color, they are more willing to try different products as well as other accessories to represent their distinct personalities.
Choosing 7-inch as the padâ€™s scale not only decreased greatly the overall weight, but also enhanced the portability.
Roll The Edge Thes size fo the tablet is similar to a booklet size. Users can use only one hand to operate the tablet. I was inspired from how people hold a book. They tend to roll the pages in order to better grab it in one hand.
Edges For Different Concern
When Pamphlet is used in a portrait scenario, a smooth edge with downward curve provides a comfortable grip; whereas in a landscape scenario, a subtle grip rising upward can avoid slipping the device through the userâ€™s hand.
Working with mechanical engineers, we came up with a design proposal of placing most of the components in the front cover so that we can reduce the assembling procedures as well as reinforce the overall strength of the mechanical structure.

Flora Ice Tray was the first product I designed that was launched onto the market. It is a creative ice mold that encourages slow living and evokes peopleâ€™s memories of appreciating the floral blossom especially in this fastpaced society. Floral Ice Tray received Taipei Industrial Design Award and was selected as the official gift of Taipei International Flora Expo in 2010.
Appreciating the falling flower
Slow Living Taiwan is famous for its diversity of floral plants and people are accustomed to seeing blossomed flowers in certain seasons. Seeing the beauty of faliing flowers not only reminds people to cherish timeâ€™s passing but also encourages a life style of slow living. I wanted to refer to this popular activity among Taiwanese people and brought this experience into our daily life.
Floral Pattern As an island with diverse terrains, Taiwan has a wide spectrum of flora. I incorporated some of the famous flower patterns with the paper-cutting art originated from traditional Chinese ornamental craft. When the ice came out from the mold, it gave a sense as a blossoming flower floating on the tea.
Bend And Release I chose the tea flower which I found it represented Taiwanâ€™s flora the best. I designed the pattern as a continuous stroke so that it froze in one piece. Floral Ice Tray is made out of food-safe silicone, which is easy to bend and helps release the ice.

Springâ€™s Will I designed this heart shaped necklace for my Mom as a birthday gift for all her love and sweat to bring us up. It was a symbol of her strong will and always caring.
