OUR AMBITION MESSAGE FROM THE HOST

Christian Rynning-Tønnesen President and CEO Statkraft

“For more than a century, Statkraft has played a pivotal role in the industrialisation of Norway. Now we are ready to play a similar role in powering a green future internationally. But we cannot achieve this alone. That’s why Statkraft – in partnership with Innovation Norway – is hosting a Studio at the Xynteo Exchange/Norway. By bringing together organisations from diverse industries, sectors and disciplines, we will mobilise for innovative ideas and new business development.”

OUR STUDIO N O R W AY A S A L A B F O R A G R E E N F U T U R E

On 15-16 November, over 400 leaders from over 30 countries met at the Xynteo Exchange/Norway to advance a new growth model fit for the 21st century. At the heart of the Exchange was a series of Studios, where we brought together leaders from business, start-ups, academia and research institutions to try to develop commercial solutions to human problems. Economic growth means an increasing demand for energy, with potentially great environmental and climate impacts. But, as Norway is already beginning to demonstrate, through the electrification of society, increased use of renewable energy, digitalisation and new business solutions, growth can be green. Today, businesses increasingly share a common ambition of driving the change agenda, joining forces across industries and nations to build green competitiveness.

In this Studio, hosted by Statkraft in partnership with Innovation Norway, we aimed to explore how Norway can serve as a lab for the innovations required to scale clean energy solutions fit for the future. On day one, we engaged with subject matter experts and end-users. On day two, we identified potential interventions within these problem areas, with the aim of developing early-stage concepts for projects that deliver both human and commercial value. Finally, we selected the most promising concepts to present in the Marketplace.

OUR THREE THEMES

Our starting point is that we can reinvent our growth model if we direct our financial resources towards real, human problems. That’s why the Studio focused on three critical themes, carefully selected by Statkraft before the Exchange.

3. THEME THREE: POWERING CLEAN DATA Big players like Facebook and Google have already made the transition – their data centres are already powered by renewable energy. But there is much to do to decarbonise our growing data demand. Data centres worldwide are contributing to the same level of greenhouse gas emissions as global air travel. Increasing digitalisation will require exponential growth in the capacity of data storage and flow in any society, and data centres and connections are the core infrastructure for this.

1. THEME ONE: SUSTAINABLE FUTURE CITIES Rapidly growing urban populations, combined with efforts to electrify as many energy uses as possible, are placing more and more strain on heating and power systems in cities. How can cities and their grids be designed or redesigned in such a way that all inhabitants have access to readily available clean electricity and heating, as well as good mobility and air quality?

How can the tech industry build sustainable and green business operations in the future?

2. THEME TWO: THE GREEN MOBILITY REVOLUTION Norway has been incredibly successful at increasing take-up of electric vehicles. In so doing it has helped generate significant ripple effects in the mobility and energy markets beyond its borders. But further market penetration in the country depends on the removal of infrastructural barriers. What is the next step? And what lessons can Norway share with others?

OUR SOLUTION CONCEPTS We collaborated to design early-stage concepts that can deliver human and commercial return. We identified a few interventions and took one to the marketplace.

INTERVENTION SELECTED FOR MARKETPLACE A U T O M AT I C F O O D WA S T E REDUCTION

The concept An automatic cash stop to prevent people buying groceries that they already have at home. Through an ‘internet of things’ digital platform, consumers’ refrigerators and pantries would communicate with food vendors to prevent duplicate purchases.

It is estimated that consumers waste one third of the food they purchase. Though they may not be motivated to limit waste for sustainability concerns, most consumers would value saving time and money on unnecessary purchases.

Potential return? The food vendors that champion the initiative could win shoppers who are interested in reducing their personal waste as well as their impact on the environment.

WHAT IF PEOPLE ONLY BOUGHT WHAT THEY NEED AND CONSUMED EVERYTHING THEY BOUGHT?

OUR SOLUTION CONCEPTS We collaborated to design early-stage concepts that can deliver human and commercial return. We identified a few interventions and took two to the marketplace.

01. LOW-CARBON FREIGHT

WHAT IF FREIGHTING WAS CARBON FREE IN THE NORDICS BY 2030? The concept An electrified highway for autonomous heavy goods vehicles between Oslo and Gothenburg.

Though most long-distance transportation of goods happens through freight, we have so far failed to deploy low-carbon freighting solutions at scale.

Potential return? The participating companies would be able to lower their fuel costs – as well as position themselves as organisations committed to a low-carbon future.

02. EV PURCHASING P L AT F O R M

WHAT IF ALL POTENTIAL CAR OWNERS HAD ACCESS TO THE NECESSARY INFORMATION AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO PURCHASE AN ECLECTIC CAR?

Individual consumers struggle to make sustainable and sound financial choices when purchasing electric vehicles. Often the lack of readily accessible and reliable information dissuades potential buyers from making the significant financial investment to go electric.

The concept A trusted platform for electric vehicle buyers to make sound financial and sustainable choices. Potential return? More readily accessible information for consumers will broaden the market for electric vehicles, benefitting manufacturers that offer affordable, sustainable options.

OUR SOLUTION CONCEPTS We collaborated to design early-stage concepts that can deliver human and commercial return. We identified a few interventions and took two to the marketplace.

0 1 . N O R D I C D ATA C E N T R E I N I T I AT I V E

WHAT IF THE NORDICS BECAME A PREFERRED BASE FOR ALL ENERGY-INTENSIVE AND LOCATION NON-CRITICAL DATA CENTRE FUNCTIONS IN AN INTEGRATED EUROPEAN DATA SYSTEM BY 2025?

Location non-critical data processing functions are often localised in geographies with a sub-optimal climate and carbon-heavy energy mix.

The concept A joint Nordic policy initiative and marketing campaign for the data centre industry. Potential return? Attracting big industry players to the Nordics has a large commercial potential for all the parties involved, in terms of tax revenues, electricity fees, local job creation and foreign investment.

0 2 . P L U G - A N D - P L AY D ATA C E N T R E S I T E S I N N O R W AY

The concept Three fully integrated sites for data centres are identified and partially developed, with the aim of showcasing the best of what Norway has to offer.

Norway is currently unable to offer plug-and-play competitive data centres.

Potential return? Attracting big industry players to the Nordics has a large commercial potential for all the parties involved, in terms of tax revenues, electricity fees, local job creation and foreign investment.

WHAT IF NORWAY WAS A PREFERRED EUROPEAN LOCATION FOR LARGE SCALE DATA CENTRES, WITH A MARKET SHARE OF 20% OF EU DATA CENTRES BY 2030?

THE MARKETPLACE

Our challenge is not a scarcity of ideas, capital or talent; in fact, these resources are abundant. But, too often, they develop in isolation from each other.

THE CONTEXT OF OUR WO R K WAS D E C A R B O N I S I N G T R A N S P O R T, H E AV Y T R A N S P O R T, AT A S C A L E . W E S T A R T E D O U T F LY I N G HIGH, BUT WE THINK WE LANDED ON AN IDEA WHICH SERVES A CAUSE AND MIGHT H AV E S O M E P O T E N T I A L . It is only when new ideas, capital and talent find each other, connect and combine, that they sustain and scale. This has long been the role of the marketplace. But the markets that we work with and within today are outdated. Their signals are misleading or incomplete. We believe that there can be a different kind of marketplace. One that fosters new ideas, capital and talent – and brings them together in new and powerful ways. At the Xynteo Exchange, we pitched our projects in the Marketplace, making the case for innovative and disruptive products and services that need collaboration to scale.
