Year Out Design Project at Footprint Architects

Bournemouth and Poole College received funding to enhance their current teaching provision with a new state-of-the-art teaching facility focused on delivering educational and practical activities for the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The project involved the development of the original Applied Arts building which was refurbished and altered to accommodate the new teaching facilities. The new STEM Centre incorporates classrooms, lecture theatres, offices, communal spaces, a science laboratory, applied biology lab, and an exciting new ‘Ideas Room’. The original toilets and staircases have been retained. The building will cater for higher education purposes and will strengthen the STEM agenda offering entirely new courses aligned with the current workplace practices. The aim of the STEM centre is to meet the needs of businesses and the local economy by providing a well equipped workforce.

The building consists of 1220 sq. m teaching, office and circulation space set over 3 levels including a fully accessible WC and spacious communal area. Each of the STEM faculties have their own class bases fitted out in order for them to teach the core curriculum activities and is able to share the general teaching areas and lecture theatre. Central to the philosophy of the college’s approach to STEM teaching is the provision of an Ideas Room which is providing an environment of open, self directed learning fostering an enthusiasm toward innovative technologies and investigation in STEM.
