Ideas

traditional
Chinese
arts
provide
a
novel
context
over
the
approximately
35
 minutes
of
the
work.
 
 The
composition
combines
aural
and
visual
experience
through
music,
dance,
 and
visual
effects.

Echo
consists
of
five
movements,
each
of
which
 deploys
varied
combinations
of
instrumentation,
dance,
text
and
images.

 Musical
materials
drawn
from
traditional
Chinese
folk
songs
are
incorporated
into
a
 collage/montage
arrangement.


 The
first
movement,
Silhouette
explores
timbre
fusion
and
micro‐variation
of
 melody
and
rhythm.
Nostalgia
is
inspired
by
a
Chinese
poem.
This
movement
 depicts
a
lonely
soul
and
a
desolate
atmosphere.
Chinese
calligraphy
and
computer‐ generated
images
are
projected
on
a
large
screen
on
stage
alongside
the

The
third
movement,
Operatic
Rhapsody,
employs
the
musical
materials
from
 BeiJing
Opera
with
rhapsodic
development.
Love
Song
is
a
lyrical
movement.
In
 Chinese
rural
areas,
antiphonal
singing
is
a
custom
for
young
women
and
men
 expressing
their
admiration
to
each
other.
The
violinist
plays
at
the
choral
terrace
 and
the
cellist
plays
on
the
stage,
facing
each
other.
One
female
dancer
and
one
male
 dancer
start
dancing
from
the
two
sides
of
the
stage,
moving
toward
each
other
and
 meeting
at
the
center
of
the
stage.
The
last
movement,
Carnival,
features
the
entire
 ensemble.
Towards
the
end
of
this
movement,
the
musical
materials
from
the
 previous
movements
are
juxtaposed
and
combined
vertically,
producing
a
playful
 fantasy.
Sudden
shifts
of
different
tempi,
dynamics,
and
gestures
conclude
the
work
 with
a
kaleidoscopic
montage.
