Intro This report contains my process, exploration, experiments in the assignment DG118 Material Matters by Frans Franssen. During this assignment, my initial idea is inspired by my project. I wanted to create an evolutive Cheese shape with different materials. However, due to material limitation, I changed my direction later. And start exploring Cheese protective skin -

Wax. So, in this repot you can two deliverables. The fist deliverable is about Cheese Shape Exploration. The second is about my journey of exploring the material of Cheese Skin - Wax.


Before Starting Draw ourselves During the first lesson of this assignment, we didn’t do research or experiment immediately. The assignor asked everyone to sketch ourselves first. I think this is a good opportunity to understand our ownself and find out ‘why’. Why I have this assignment, why I have Cheese protective skin as my direction, why I experiment wax this material. Start with why and start with exploring our ownself inspireed me a lot. It is a way for me to get closer and understand more of what design I like and what design fits me.

Before Starting BEELDENSTROM Visiting Before starting, we visited BEELDENSTROM. It is a facility workshop where artists, designers, students and others can work and experiment. This workshop is built by a team of supervisors who have the knowledge and skills to support designors ideas in metal and plastic. However, the supervisor who is expertise on plastic has been left. That’s the reason I changed my design idea and explore Wax later.


Works with different materials in BEELDENSTROM:


Cheese Shape In the beginning, I wanted to combine this assignment togehter with my project concept: a cheese for lactose intolerant: its bacteria protective skin digests and eliminates lactose. My initial idea is to use flexible plastic like TPE to design a fresh new shape of cheese and its protective skin. So I first explored what kind of shape I can change for the cheese. In the meantime, I experimented some other materials to inspire me, like wool, curds-shaped material, spider web or even cotton candy.

Wax Due to the limitation of plastic, I cannot experience making these shapes with flexible plastic. However I got inspirations from Cheese coating - Cheese Wax. Wax is actually a class of chemical compounds that are plastic near ambient temperatures. It is flexible and also strong coating ability. Wax can be easily impressionable or readily molded. So I started my jouney of Wax. I combined materials like wool, cotton candy with wax and see the special chemical reactions.

Experiment Wax with other materials Wax & Paper Wax can be seen as a solid plastic. It is also a kind of pliable liquid substance. With this experiment, I wanted to know how wax react on normal paper. With my findings, I hope I would better understand features of wax. I have used 2 kind of paper; normal sketching paper, soft plastic paper, hard plastic papar.


Normal Sketching Paper When pulling hot wax on the normal sketching paper, the paper will react like with water. Somepart of paper rolled up with wax for one second. And then stayed normal when wax became solid again.

However on the back side, the papar was dipped by the wax. That means inside of wax there is oil and liquid composition. So there is phase solubility between paper and wax.


Experiment Wax with other materials Wax & Paper Wax can be seen as a solid plastic. It is also a kind of pliable liquid substance. With this experiment, I wanted to know how wax react on normal paper. With my findings, I hope I would better understand features of wax. Soft Plastic Paper On the soft plastic paper, it has the same reaction at first like on the paper. Some part of paper gathered together with wax. And then stop reacting after 2 or 3 seconds.

The back side of soft plastic paper has beautiful mark.

Hard Plastic Paper

When pulling hot wax on the hard plastic paper, there is nothing happened together with wax.

The back side also showed a mark of wax. And on the hard plastic paer, wax is extremely easy to be taken off.


Experiment Wax with other materials Wax & Fabric Inspired from previous experiments, I found wax is very easy to break into small pieces when it is flat. However, the normal understanding of skin should be flexible and soft. So I thought about experiment on different fabric materials like cloth, cotton, mesh fabric and towel with wax and find which has the most adhesive and flexibility when together with wax.

When wax became solid again, it’s very easy to take it off from cloth.

So I thought about experiment on different fabric materials like cloth, cotton, mesh fabric and towel with wax and find which has the most adhesive and flexibility when together with wax.

Wax on the mesh fabric also has no adhesive. And it will become hard without and flexibilty

Wax with the absorbent fabric can be adhered. But the was will harden the fabric together with itself.

Wax can be absorbed by cotton fabric. It will stick on cotton firmly and has the same flexibility of cotton.


Final Product My goal of the final product was to combine wax with other materials and find out a proper way to change wax identity and let is has good flexibilty. From previous experiments, I found matrials like cotton can adhere wax together and change wax with better flexibility when wax was harden again. So I combined one material which has the similar structure of cotton - plasic spider web. The combined two materials shows good flexibility and sustainability in the end.


Reflection First for this assignment, I really like the way that we start it. At first, when I told to draw myself, I could not understand the reason for this. However. When I start drawing, I found the difficulty of sketching myself. But actually from discovering how to draw myself in proper way helped me to learn about myself. It was a good way to assess myself and have a more in-depth self-understanding. The process that I went through during the assignment was new for me. Instead of starting with an idea and then define the material. We went the other way around. It’s like finding diamond from chaos. The principle of the process was “learning and exploring by doing�. However the process started slowly, but throughout the process. I became more curious and developed more ideas from experiments. I could easily find out problems and opportunities during the experiments and also had more fun from playing around different materials. The assignment taught me a valuable design approach to explore and research a material. An approach that made me understands a material that not can be achieved with only theoretical researches, where findings and experiment results becomes more valuable because you discovered it yourself. It also taught me a way of designing: doing when thinking.
