TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABOUT BARRIUM SULFATE POWDER ========================================================================== Barium sulfate powder (Fixed white / artificial barite). It belongs to a class of medications called radiopaque contrast media. It works by covering the esophagus, stomach or intestines, with a material that is not absorbed in the body and allows sick or damaged areas can be clearly seen through the examination of computerized x-rays or tomography. Chemical formula BaSO4 Therapeutic indications Intestinal radiological examinations, esophagus, stomach and duodenum radiographs, simple or double contrast.

Posology According to the type of radiological examination to be performed and the technique used. Oral. Esophageal examination: 50-200% p / v. Stomach and duodenum examination: 300 ml of susp. 30-200% p / v. Double contrast radiograph of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum: 135 ml of. 98% p / p. Opacification of the lower gastrointestinal tract in single and double contrast radiographs: 97.4% w / w, dose according to radiologist criteria and examination to be performed. Rectal. Colon test:> 2 l of susp. 20-130% p / v. Susp. 1.05 g / ml. Ads .: approximately 600 ml. Children: dose determined by the doctor, according to age and weight. Large bowel examination: should be free of any waste that may affect the radiological examination.


Contraindications Gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation with perforation risk: colitis acute colitis diverticulosis , after biopsies of colon , rectum or radiotherapy, pyloric stenosis, hypersensitivity to barium sulfate powder , abdominal box peritoneal irritation, fistulas intestinal injury or chemical burns tract Esophagus gastrointestinal, gastrointestinal wall ischemia, necrotizing enterocolitis, prior to surgical intervention of the gastrointestinal tract. Do not take this medicine if you have: •

Asthma

Dehydration

Eczema or history of major allergies

Blocking or intestinal perforation

• Stomach or bowel cancer an unusual reaction to barium sulfate powder, other medications, foods, dyes or preservatives •

If you are pregnant or looking to get pregnant

If you are breastfeeding a baby

Warnings and precautions Children and elderly debilitated, assess benefit/risk with high-grade stenosis, fistulas, gastrointestinal carcinoma, inflammatory gastrointestinal, diverticulosis, amebiasis, wait 7 days after endoscopic excision, 4 weeks if radiotherapy, ensure good hydration, saline laxatives if susceptibility to constipation, a risk of esophageal reflux. Side effects Side effects that you should tell your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •

Feeling full

Constipation (severe or continuous)

Cramps (severe)

Nausea or vomiting

Stomach pain or lower abdomen

Chest tightness or difficult breathing

Wheezing
