Undergraduate May Internship 2019

Hello, I am an undergraduate student from Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore. As a junior designer, I do enjoy in designing space and I am interested in lighting design as well. I strongly believe that a successful design could always create an immediate emotional connection with its users. Thus, driven by the passion for spatial and lighting design, I am always seeking for opportunities to explore and express myself. These are a collection of works that I have done during my first 2 years of study in Lasalle. I hope you would enjoy reading through all of them and the thinking process behind them as well as much as I do. Besides, I am particularly interested in heritage building conservation and renovation work even though I have never taken part of it before. If there is any opportunities, I would always excited to contribute my efforts.

The Growing Pavilion The design intention is to make use of the pointed arches ( one of the characteristic in Gothic architecture) as a design element to develop a pavilion in an open park for people gathering or taking rest. The employment of pointed arches allowed the medieval architects to build higher cathedrals with big interior space and openings. The cathedrals grew taller as the technics continued to develop. Thus, the pointed arches also became larger and show a growing trend. Therefore the structure is called “The growing pavilion.

The Light house Waterloo center is a mixed-use of residential and commercial property located at 261, waterloo street Singapore. It is within the arts and heritage district. The complex has being given a makeover into arts place a few years back, however, the building seems a log quieter than the surrounding. The design intention is to design a space to let the public enjoy the natural daylighting during the daytime and experience the dramatic artificial interactive lighting in the nighttime. The initial form of the insertion was derived from the natural organism - Sea Sponge.

The Dyna-tic Path The Dyna-tic Path is a centre where water pools with different functions are used for achieving highly effective brain and destress. Water is a media which allows humanbrain to flow faster as well as to replace lost cells resulting from stress. Therefore the two programs are water aerobics and floating. Water aerobics is focus on physical fitness and it is a dynamic activity whereas floating targets on mental well-being and it has static energy. The design intent focus on how toposition the two pools with different energy at the given site and how to use the circulation to direct people to each of the pool through a transitional pathway.

Solo Dining - “ABNA” #alone, but not alone Eating alone amongst grouped diners can make one feel awkward and uneasy. “ABNA” will provide you with an alternative solo dining experience. Solo diners will have a sense of companionship with the presence of other solo diners, an impression of indirect companionship which reduces the awkward moment when dining alone. Diners can prevent confrontational moments by choosing the seating location that they prefer. The continuity in the structure functions ergonomically as a single unifying entity. This provides a comfortable environment for the user which will improve their overall solo dining experience. With that, we aim to create a space which is less lonely and less awkward for the visitors, making solo dining an enjoyable moment of solitude. This installation caters to the needs of people of different size, height and personality. They can explore the structure freely and choose where they want the seat based on their preference. With that we are trying to provide a playful and imaginative solo dining space.

The Inter-gen Link The Inter-Gen Link is a new institution which is designed to encourage the intergenerational bonding between kids and elderly. The interaction between the two groups has shown positive effects to both of them. As we thinking forward to the furture, the number of elderly will keep increasing. Most of them are well educated and they might be willing to contribute to the society again after their retirement. The two groups of people have some similarities. Therefore we could try to connect their daily acivity space within a community to create a communal space for them to “take care of eacother.
